Notes: The effect of glassy-phase chemistry, using Y3Al5O12 (YAG) and SiO2 as sintering additives, on the microstructure and mechanical properties of liquid-phase-sintered, and subsequently annealed, α-SiC materials was investigated. The microstructural development of annealed materials was insensitive to changes in glass chemistry. The mechanical properties vs SiO2/YAG ratio curve had a maximum; i.e., there was a small glass composition range at which optimum mechanical properties were realized. The best results were obtained when the ratio was ∼0.5. The flexural strength and fracture toughness of the material were 〉450 MPa and 〉6 MPa·m1/2, respectively.

Notes: By using an oxynitride glass composition from the Y-Mg-Si-Al-O-N system as a sintering additive, the effect of atmosphere on densification was investigated during the liquid-phase sintering of SiC, and the resulting microstructure and mechanical properties of the sintered and subsequently annealed materials were investigated. SiC ceramics that were densified with 10 wt% oxynitride glass showed higher sinterability in a nitrogen atmosphere. Oxynitride glass enlarged the stability region of β-SiC and suppressed β→ alpha phase transformation, which resulted in an equiaxed microstructure. Grain growth of fine-grained SiC in some extent (up to ∼300 nm) was beneficial in improving both room-temperature strength and toughness. The best results were obtained when the ceramics were hot-pressed at 1800°C for 1 h in a nitrogen atmosphere and subsequently annealed at 1900°C for 3 h in an argon atmosphere. The room-temperature flexural strength and fracture toughness of the material were 847 MPa and 3.5 MPa·m1/2, respectively.

Notes: Cerium(III) sulfide (Ce2S3) powder was synthesized via the sulfurization of ceria (CeO2) powder using carbon disulfide gas. Single-phase α-Ce2S3 could be formed via sulfurization at 973 K for 28.8 ks. The preparation of α-Ce2S3 became feasible at low temperature, in comparison to sulfurization using hydrogen sulfide gas. According to the fact that the formation of α-Ce2S3 was accelerated by the addition of carbon black to the CeO2 powder, carbothermic reduction was considered to become a dominant reaction, as the temperature increased. To obtain the activation energy for the densification of β-Ce2S3 powder, which was prepared by vacuum heating α-Ce2S3, the data of densification by hot pressing was analyzed by a kinetic equation that was proposed by other researchers. As a result, the sintering behavior could be best explained by a grain-boundary-diffusion mechanism that had an apparent activation energy of 382 kJ/mol.

Notes: Fine (}0.1μm) β-SiC powders, with 3.3 wt% large (}0.44μm) α-SiC or β-SiC particles (seeds) added, were hot-pressed at 1750°C and then annealed at 1850°C to enhance grain growth. Microstructural development during annealing was investigated using image analysis. The introduction of larger seeds into β-SiC accelerated the grain growth of elongated large grains during annealing, in which no appreciable β→α phase transformation occurred. The growth of matrix grains in materials with β-SiC seeds was slower than that in materials with α-SiC seeds. The material with β-SiC seeds, which was annealed at 1850°C for 4 h, had a bimodal microstructure of small matrix grains and large elongated grains. In contrast, the material with α-SiC seeds, also annealed at 1850°C for 4 h, had a uniform microstructure consisting of elongated grains. The fracture toughnesses of the annealed materials with α-SiC and β-SiC seeds were 5.5 and 5.4 MPa·1/2, respectively. Such results suggested that further optimization of microstructure should be possible with β-SiC seeds, because of the remnant driving force for grain growth caused by the bimodal microstructure.

Notes: The thickness of intergranular films in polycrystalline β-Si3N4 ceramics, both before and after superplastic deformation, has been systematically investigated using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. In characterizing the film thickness, care was taken to correlate the grain boundary orientation with the direction of the compressive stress applied during the hot-pressing and the superplastic deformation. The film thickness shows a dependence on the intersection angle between the grain boundary and the applied force direction, typically ranging from around a characteristic value for most of the boundaries to zero for a boundary which has an overall short length and is perpendicular to the applied force direction. The film thicknesses in the deformed material, as compared with those before deformation, are marked by a wider distribution and an increased fraction of boundaries free of films, unequivocally demonstrating that during the superplastic deformation the liquid phase is redistributed within short ranges, a process governed by the local stress level as well as kinetic factors. Possible consequences of the liquid-phase redistribution on the deformation behavior are also discussed.

Notes: A microstructure that consisted of uniformly distributed, elongated β-Si3N4 grains, equiaxed β-SiC grains, and an amorphous grain-boundary phase was developed by using β-SiC and alpha-Si3N4 powders. By hot pressing, elongated β-Si3N4 grains were grown via alpha right arrow β phase transformation and equiaxed β-SiC grains were formed because of inhibited grain growth. The strength and fracture toughness of SiC have been improved by adding Si3N4 particles, because of the reduced defect size and the enhanced bridging and crack deflection by the elongated β-Si3N4 grains. Typical flexural-strength and fracture-toughness values of SiC-35-wt%-Si3N4 composites were 1020 MPa and 5.1 MPam1/2, respectively.

Notes: By using α- and β-SiC starting powders with similar particle sizes, the effects of initial α-phase content on the microstructure and the mechanical properties of the liquid-phase-sintered and subsequently annealed materials were investigated. The microstructures developed were analyzed by image analysis. When β-SiC powder was used, the grains became elongated. The average diameter decreased with increasing α-SiC content and the aspect ratio showed a maximum at 10%α-SiC and decreased with increasing α-SiC content in the starting powder. Such results suggest that microstructure can be controlled by changing α-phase content in starting powders. The strength increased with increasing α-SiC content in the starting powder while the fracture toughness decreased with increasing α-SiC content. There may be a trade-off in improving both the strength and toughness in SiC ceramics sintered with oxide additives.

Notes: Single crystals of α-Si3N4 were annealed at 2000°–2150°C. The β phase was detected after annealing at 2150°C only when the crystals were surrounded by MgO·3Al2O3 or Y2O3 powders. On the other hand, no evidence of the α–β transformation was found when the crystals were annealed without additives. The solution–precipitation mechanism was concluded to be the dominant factor in the α–β transformation of Si3N4.

Notes: Fine-grained (〈1 μm) silicon carbide ceramics with high strength were obtained by using ultrafine (∼90 nm) β-SiC starting powders and a seeding technique for microstructural control. The microstructures of the as-hot-pressed and annealed ceramics without α-SiC seeds consisted of fine, uniform, and equiaxed grains. In contrast, the annealed material with seeds had a uniform, anisotropic microstructure consisting of elongated grains, owing to the overgrowth of β-phase on α-seeds. The strength, the Weibull modulus, and the fracture toughness of fine-grained SiC ceramics increased with increasing grain size up to ∼1 μm. Such results suggested that a small amount of grain growth in the fine grained region (〈1 μm) was beneficial for mechanical properties. The flexural strength and the fracture toughness of the annealed seeded materials were 835 MPa and 4.3 MPa·m1/2, respectively.

Notes: Annealing induces significant microstructural changes in β-Si3N4 ceramics densified with a silica containing additive, as signified by the precipitation of elongated Si2N2O grains in the fine-grained β-Si3N4 matrix, leading to a reinforced structure. The phases and microstructure evolution and the interface structural features in this composite system have been systematically studied by using X-ray diffraction, and conventional and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. Traced from the indispensable features of the Si2N2O grains, typically the spatial distribution of the stacking faults and the size, morphology, phase, and the spatial distribution of the particles trapped within the Si2N2O, it has been generally established that Si2N2O grains nucleate heterogeneously on the β-Si3N4 grain surface and grow rather quickly. The low nucleation rate and high growth speed of Si2N2O indicate a high nucleation barrier of Si2N2O and fast diffusion of (N,O) in the liquid. Experimentally, no epitaxial orientation relationship between Si2N2O grains and intragranularly trapped β-Si3N4 grains which either serve as a nucleation site for Si2N2O or are simply encapsulated during Si2N2O grain growth can be observed; instead, the interface between the Si3N4 and the Si2N2O features an amorphous phase of uneven thickness. Sialon polytypoid phase particles similarly trapped in Si2N2O show an epitaxial relationship with Si2N2O grains. From the observed interface structure between the Si2N2O and β-Si3N4, a possible partial ordering of a glass film in the form of Si2N2O is also discussed.
