Description: The horseshoe vortex formed around the base of a cylinder by a separating laminar boundary layer has been investigated experimentally. Smoke flow visualization shows that both steady and unsteady vortex systems exist. Pressure distributions beneath both types of vortex system have been measured and the variation of the horseshoe vortex position on the plane of symmetry upstream of the cylinder has been determined. Unsteady horseshoe vortex systems are shown to have a complex oscillatory behaviour and the nature of this oscillatory behaviour is described. Using smoke flow visualization techniques some measurements have been made of the velocity distributions within horseshoe vortex systems. © 1979, Cambridge University Press

Description: The motion of free surfaces in incompressible, irrotational, inviscid layered flows is studied by evolution equations for the position of the free surfaces and appropriate dipole (vortex) and source strengths. The resulting Fredholm integral equations of the second kind may be solved efficiently in both storage and work by iteration in both two and three dimensions. Applications to breaking water waves over finite-bottom topography and interacting triads of surface and interfacial waves are given. © 1982, Cambridge University Press. All rights reserved.

Description: The instability of an initially flat vortex sheet to a sinusoidal perturbation of the vorticity is studied by means of high-order Taylor series in time t. All finite-amplitude corrections are retained at each order in t. Our analysis indicates that the sheet develops a curvature singularity at t = tc 〈 oo. The variation of tc with the amplitude a of the perturbation vorticity is in good agreement with the asymptotic results of Moore. When a is 0(1), the Fourier coefficient of order n decays slightly faster than predicted by Moore. Extensions of the present prototype of Kelvin-Helmholtz instability to other layered flows, such as Rayleigh-Taylor instability, are indicated. © 1982, Archives Europeennes de Sociology. Description: Free-streamline theory is employed to construct an exact steady solution for a linear array of hollow, or stagnant cored, vortices in an inviscid incompressible fluid. If each vortex has area A and the separation is L, there are two possible shapes if A ½/L is less than a critical value 0.38 and none if it is larger. The stability of the shapes to two-dimensional, periodic and symmetric disturbances is considered for hollow vortices. The more deformed of the two possible shapes is found to be unstable while the less deformed shape is stable. © 1976, Cambridge University Press. All rights reserved.

Description: Fink & Soh (1978) reported a technique to calculate numerically the motion of vortex sheets. They claim it gives reliable results. This paper re-examines the error in the calculation of the velocity of mesh points representing the sheet and shows that the test case used by Fink & Soh is not an adequate one. Instead the roll-up of a vortex sheet shed by a ring wing is studied. The results obtained proved unreliable. (Although several possibilities are discussed) the reason for the breakdown in results remains unknown. © 1980, Cambridge University Press. All rights reserved.
