    Description: Aluminum (Al) toxicity is one of the main growth and yield limiting factors for barley grown on acid soils. Silicon (Si) ameliorates Al toxicity as well as it promotes the phenolic compounds production that have antioxidant or structural role. We evaluated the time-dependent kinetics of Al and Si uptake and the impact of Si on the production of antioxidant- or structural- phenols in barley cultivars at the short-term. Two barley cultivars with contrasting Al tolerance (Hordeum vulgare ‘Sebastian’, Al tolerant; and H. vulgare ‘Scarlett’, Al sensitive), exposed to either −Al (0 mM) or +Al (0.2 mM) nutrient solutions without Si (−Si) or with 2 mM (+Si) were cultured for 48 h. Aluminum and Si concentration decreased in plants at all harvest times when Al and Si were simultaneously supplied; this effect was more noticeable in ‘Scarlett’. Nevertheless, Si influenced the antioxidant system of barley irrespective of the Al tolerance of the cultivar, decreasing oxidative damage and enhancing radical scavenging activity, the production of phenolic compounds, and lignin accumulation in barley with short-term exposure to Al.

    Description: (1) Background: Spain is the sixth strawberry producer in the world, with about 6500 ha producing more than 350,000 tons, and an annual commercial value about 390 million €. Stunted and dead strawberry plants are frequently associated with plant-parasitic nematodes, but nematode diseases have not been characterized to date in the country. (2) Methods: A poll on the perception of the impact of nematodes on strawberry production was carried out by face-to-face interviews with farm advisors. In addition, nematological field surveys were carried out at the end of the growing season in 2017 and 2018 to determine prevalence and abundance of plant-parasitic nematodes in strawberry crops. The host suitability to Meloidogyne hapla of seventeen strawberry cultivars and the tolerance limit to M. hapla at progressively higher initial population densities (Pi) were assessed in pot experiments in a growth chamber. Comparison of the relative efficacies of several soil disinfestation methods in controlling nematode populations (M. hapla and Pratylenchus penetrans) was carried out in experimental field trials for twelve consecutive years. (3) Results: Meloidogyne spp., Pratylenchus penetrans, and Hemicycliophora spp. were the main plant-parasitic nematodes in the strawberry fields in South Spain. Root-knot nematodes were found in 90% of the fields, being M. hapla the most prevalent species (71% of the fields). A tolerance limit of 0.2 M. hapla juveniles per g of soil was estimated for strawberry, and currently cropped strawberry cultivars did not show resistance to M. hapla. Nematode population densities were reduced by more than 70% by soil fumigation with 1,3-dichloropropene, dazomet, dimethyl-disulfide, and methyl iodide. The efficacy of metam-sodium in reducing nematode populations was about 50% and that of chloropicrin, furfural, and sodium-azide, less than 40%. Combination of solarization with organic manures (biosolarization) reduced soil nematode populations by 68–73%. (4) Conclusions: Plant-parasitic nematodes (Meloidogyne, Pratylenchus, and Hemicycliophora) are widely distributed in the strawberry fields of Southern Spain. Strawberry is a poor host for M. hapla with a tolerance limit of 0.2 J2 per g of soil, and low population increases in cropping cycles of 7–8 months. Strawberry cultivars show a range of susceptibility and tolerance to M. hapla, but no resistance is found. Nematodes are effectively controlled by chemical fumigation of soils, but soil biosolarization is equally effective, and therefore, can be proposed as a sustainable alternative for pathogen control in strawberry cultivation.

    Description: To maintain grassland productivity and limit resource depletion, scarce mineral P (phosphorus) fertilizers must be replaced by alternative P sources. The effect of these amendments on plant growth may depend on physicochemical soil parameters, in particular pH. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of soil pH on biomass production, P use efficiency, and soil P forms after P amendment application (100 mg kg−1 P) using poultry manure compost (PM), rock phosphate (RP), and their combination (PMRP). We performed a growth chamber experiment with ryegrass plants (Lolium perenne) grown on two soil types with contrasting pH under controlled conditions for 7 weeks. Chemical P fractions, biomass production, and P concentrations were measured to calculate plant uptake and P use efficiency. We found a strong synergistic effect on the available soil P, while antagonistic effects were observed for ryegrass production and P uptake. We conclude that although the combination of PM and RP has positive effects in terms of soil P availability, the combined effects of the mixture must be taken into account and further evaluated for different soil types and grassland plants to maximize synergistic effects and to minimize antagonistic ones.

    Description: Fragaria chiloensis is an herbaceous perennial undomesticated species with a high potential for sustainable fruit production in areas where drought and salinity represent a constraint on crop growth and productivity. The present study aimed to examine the genetic variability of fruit weight, firmness and color parameters (L*, a*, b*, Hue angle and Chroma) in wild-collected accessions from south-central Chile. A Bayesian analysis of genetic parameters showed that the traits under study were found to be moderately to highly heritable with estimates from the marginal posterior distributions ranging between 0.26 (firmness) and 0.67 (L*). Interestingly, Hue and Chroma had relatively high values of broad-sense heritability, with the Bayesian credible set: H 2 = 0.53–0.76 and H 2 = 0.42–0.66, respectively. A Bayesian bi-trait analysis showed a positive genetic correlation ( r ^ g = 0.65, probability of the posterior samples 〈0.05) between fruit weight and Hue, which agreed with the existence of two pleiotropic loci [from simple sequence repeats (SSR) markers FvH4045 and CFACT084 on linkage groups FG3A and FG2A/2B/2C] with probabilities of the posterior estimates of 0.022 and 〈0.001, respectively. According to the Bayesian credible region, 5 (of 12) correlation estimates were significantly different from zero. Hue and Chroma showed a high and negative genetic correlation ( r ^ g = −0.762), but no significant pleotropic locus. The results are promising and suggest that the genetic variation found among wild populations of F. chiloensis supports the idea of domesticating this crop for sustainable fruit production systems.

    Description: Maize (Zea mays L.) is one of the most crucial crops for global food security worldwide. For this reason, many efforts have been undertaken to address the efficient utilization of germplasm collections. In this study, 322 inbred lines were used to link genotypic variations (53,403 haplotype blocks (HBs) and 290,973 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs)) to corresponding differences in flowering-related traits in two locations in Southern Brazil. Additionally, network-assisted gene prioritization (NAGP) was applied in order to better understand the genetic basis of flowering-related traits in tropical maize. According to the results, the linkage disequilibrium (LD) decayed rapidly within 3 kb, with a cut-off value of r2 = 0.11. Total values of 45 and 44 marker-trait associations (SNPs and HBs, respectively) were identified. Another important finding was the identification of HBs, explaining more than 10% of the total variation. NAGP identified 44, 22, and 34 genes that are related to female/male flowering time and anthesis-silking interval, respectively. The co-functional network approach identified four genes directly related to female flowering time (p 〈 0.0001): GRMZM2G013398, GRMZM2G021614, GRMZM2G152689, and GRMZM2G117057. NAGP provided new insights into the genetic architecture and mechanisms underlying flowering-related traits in tropical maize.
