    Description: This article shows the research carried out by the authors focused on how the shape of structural reinforced concrete elements treated with electrochemical chloride extraction can affect the efficiency of this process. Assuming the current use of different anode systems, the present study considers the comparison of results between conventional anodes based on Ti-RuO2 wire mesh and a cement-based anodic system such as a paste of graphite-cement. Reinforced concrete elements of a meter length were molded to serve as laboratory specimens, to closely represent authentic structural supports, with circular and rectangular sections. Results confirm almost equal performances for both types of anode systems when electrochemical chloride extraction is applied to isotropic structural elements. In the case of anisotropic ones, such as rectangular sections with no uniformly distributed rebar, differences in electrical flow density were detected during the treatment. Those differences were more extreme for Ti-RuO2 mesh anode system. This particular shape effect is evidenced by obtaining the efficiencies of electrochemical chloride extraction in different points of specimens.

    Description: The evolution of individual and total capsaicinoids content in three pepper varieties of Capsicum chinense Jacq. (‘Bode’ (B), ‘Habanero’ (H), and ‘Habanero Roxo’ (Hr)) during fruit ripening was studied. The five major capsaicinoids (nordihydrocapsaicin, capsaicin, dihydrocapsaicin, homocapsaicin, and homodihydrocapsaicin) were extracted using ultrasound-assisted extraction and the extracts were analysed by ultra-performance liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection (UHPLC-Fl). The plants were grown in a glasshouse and sampled every 7 days until over-ripening. As expected, the results indicated that the total capsaicinoids content increases during the ripening of pepper fruits. The maximum contents of capsaicinoids were reached at different fruit development stages depending on the cultivar. The ‘Habanero Roxo’ pepper presented the greatest total capsaicinoids content (3.86 mg g−1 fresh weigh, F.W.), followed by the ‘Habanero’ pepper (1.33 mg g−1 F.W.) and ‘Bode’ pepper (1.00 mg g−1 F.W.). In all the samples, capsaicin represented more than 80% of the total capsaicinoids content. Due to the high variability observed in the evolution of capsaicinoids content over the ripening process, this work intends to contribute to the existing knowledge on this aspect in relation to the quality of peppers.

    Description: Central Chile is heavily exploited for mineral and water resources, with agriculture and large urban populations all creating intensive landscape use. Few records of past environmental and climate change are available that afford a broader context. To aid in this assessment, we present a 700-year reconstruction from Laguna del Maule (LdM) in the high Andes of central Chile based on sedimentological, geochemical, diatom and pollen analyses. The age model is based on 210 Pb/ 137 Cs and 14 C dating tied into known volcanic eruptions. Sedimentology consists of organic-rich sediments and diatom oozes with several interspersed volcanic-rich facies and two tephra deposits. Sediment geochemistry exhibits increased productivity (high Br/Ti, biosilica) and more dominant oxic conditions (high Fe/Mn) from AD 1300 to 1400 and from AD 1650 to 1850, likely during periods of relatively lower lake levels and better development of littoral environments. However, during this later period, high elevation vegetation was dominant, indicative of regional cooler/wetter conditions. In contrast, sediments deposited from AD 1850 to 1930 evidence decreased productivity and increased anoxic lake bottom conditions. The ‘Little Ice Age’ (LIA) in LdM is characterized by significant variations in lake dynamics and hydrology with cooler/wetter conditions (AD 1570–1700), major environmental changes in the 18th century and ending at ca. AD 1850. LdM record documents the impact of the LIA in the southern hemisphere and stresses the global nature of this climate period. Large changes in lake dynamics and diatoms assemblages during the 20th century could be related to anthropogenic impacts, but recent changes in climate patterns cannot be excluded.

    Description: In recent years, several researchers have shown the good performance of alkali activated slag cement and concretes. Besides their good mechanical properties and durability, this type of cement is a good alternative to Portland cements if sustainability is considered. Moreover, multifunctional cement composites have been developed in the last decades for their functional applications (self-sensing, EMI shielding, self-heating, etc.). In this study, the strain and damage sensing possible application of carbon fiber reinforced alkali activated slag pastes has been evaluated. Cement pastes with 0, 0.29 and 0.58 vol % carbon fiber addition were prepared. Both carbon fiber dosages showed sensing properties. For strain sensing, function gage factors of up to 661 were calculated for compressive cycles. Furthermore, all composites with carbon fibers suffered a sudden increase in their resistivity when internal damages began, prior to any external signal of damage. Hence, this material may be suitable as strain or damage sensor.

    Description: Based on the application of OB considerations (Part I) to various major thermal barrier coating (TBC) compositions and two types of important calcium–magnesium–alumino–silicates (CMAS)—desert sand and fly ash—the 2 ZrO 2 · Y 2 O 3 solid solution (ss) TBC composition, with high CMAS-resistance potential, is chosen for studying molten-CMAS/TBC interactions. It is demonstrated that 2ZrO 2 ·Y 2 O 3 (ss) air plasma sprayed (APS) TBCs are highly resistant to high-temperature attack by both sand-CMAS and fly-ash-CMAS. Despite the differences in the compositions of the two CMASs, the overall CMAS-attack mitigation mechanisms in both cases appear to be similar, viz reaction between 2ZrO 2 ·Y 2 O 3 (ss) APS TBC and the CMAS, and the formation of main reaction products of Y-depleted c - ZrO 2 and nonstoichiometric Ca – Y apatite. Large differences in the OBs (ΔΛ) between the 2ZrO 2 ·Y 2 O 3 (ss) and the CMASs are good predictors of ready reaction between this TBC and these CMASs. While the details of the CMAS-mitigation mechanisms can depend critically on various other aspects, the OB difference (ΔΛ) calculations could be used for the initial screening of CMAS-resistant TBC compositions.

    Description: A multiproxy study of a 7 m long sedimentary sequence from Lake La Parra (39°50.948', 1°52', 1014 m a.s.l.) supported by 11 14 C AMS and 210 Pb/ 137 Cs dates provides a robust, high-resolution hydrological and environmental variability record for the last 1600 years of the Las Torcas sinkhole Complex in the Central Iberian Range. The succession of depositional environments in Lake La Parra sinkhole is controlled by both changes in the regional water table and by the balance between sedimentary input through ephemeral creeks and in-lake production of carbonates and organic matter. Although synergetic links with climate are likely, phases of increased sediment delivery to the lake at c . ad 500–700, c . ad 1000, ad 1450–1500, ad 1550–650 and since 1700 till recent times are driven primarily by human impact in the watershed. Prior to c . ad 300, the sinkhole was dry, then became a lake at the end of the Roman Period ( ad 350) when the doline was flooded, and it has not dried out during the last 1600 years. Moderate lake levels with deposition of coarser clastic facies dominated up to the 12th century ( ad 400–1200), and relatively higher levels with deposition of laminated facies during the 13th–15th centuries ( ad 1200–1600). The pattern of palaeohydrological evolution at a centennial scale is roughly coherent with most Iberian lacustrine records; however, the ‘La Parra’ sequence indicates that increased humidity during Iberian–Roman times was restricted to southern Spain and the humid phases of the ‘Little Ice Age’ (‘LIA’) starting and ending earlier in the central Iberian Range compared with the Pyrenean Domain and southern Spain. This new sequence highlights the heterogeneity through space and time of the main dry and wet climatic periods at shorter scales, emphasizing the impact of latitudinal climate gradients on the Iberian Peninsula climate variability.

    Description: The higher operating temperatures in gas-turbine engines enabled by thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) engender new materials issues, viz silicate particles (sand, volcanic ash, fly ash) ingested by the engine melt on the hot TBC surfaces and form calcium–magnesium–alumino–silicate (CMAS) glass deposits. The molten CMAS glass degrades TBCs, leading to their premature failure. In this context, we have used the concept of optical basicity (OB) to provide a quantitative chemical basis for the screening of CMAS-resistant TBC compositions, which could also be extended to environmental barrier coatings (EBCs). By applying OB difference considerations to various major TBC compositions and two types of important CMASs—desert sand and fly ash—the 2 ZrO 2 · Y 2 O 3 solid solution (ss) TBC composition, with the potential for high CMAS-resistance, is chosen for this study. Here, we also demonstrate the feasibility of processing of 2ZrO 2 ·Y 2 O 3 (ss) air-plasma sprayed (APS) TBC using commercially developed powders. The resulting TBCs with typical APS microstructures are found to be single-phase cubic fluorite, having a thermal conductivity 〈0.9 W·(m·K) −1 at elevated temperatures. The accompanying Part II paper presents results from experiments and analyses of high-temperature interactions between 2ZrO 2 ·Y 2 O 3 (ss) APS TBC and the two types of CMASs.

    Description: The main strategy to reduce the environmental impact of the concrete industry is to reuse the waste materials. This research has considered the combination of cement replacement by industrial by-products, and natural coarse aggregate substitution by recycled aggregate. The aim is to evaluate the behavior of concretes with a reduced impact on the environment by replacing a 50% of cement by industrial by-products (15% of spent fluid catalytic cracking catalyst and 35% of fly ash) and a 100% of natural coarse aggregate by recycled aggregate. The concretes prepared according to these considerations have been tested in terms of mechanical strengths and the protection offered against steel reinforcement corrosion under carbonation attack and chloride-contaminated environments. The proposed concrete combinations reduced the mechanical performance of concretes in terms of elastic modulus, compressive strength, and flexural strength. In addition, an increase in open porosity due to the presence of recycled aggregate was observed, which is coherent with the changes observed in mechanical tests. Regarding corrosion tests, no significant differences were observed in the case of the resistance of these types of concretes under a natural chloride attack. In the case of carbonation attack, although all concretes did not stand the highly aggressive conditions, those concretes with cement replacement behaved worse than Portland cement concretes.
