Description:
Our recent study reported in PNAS (1) investigated exercise training effects on hippocampal volume, spatial memory, and BDNF in older humans. Our intervention included two training groups: an aerobic walking group and a stretching and toning group. The aerobic group showed increased hippocampal volume and improved memory performance after training. The toning group showed decreased hippocampal volume but also showed improved memory. In their critique, Coen et al. (2) suggest that we overstated the benefits of aerobic training for spatial memory performance, given that the toning group showed enhanced memory performance despite a decrease in hippocampal volume.Coen et al.
