Description: The regeneration of metropolitan contexts and large planetary urbanizations can no longer be postponed. The use of more and more refined techniques and technologies using metaphor in nature has become increasingly conspicuous. For there to be a real turnaround, however, concepts such as 'biodiversity', 'biomimicry', and 'ecositemic services' need to find their proper design definition, apt to maintain the complexity of settlement forms together with the complexity of life. From a bioregional point of view, it seems useful to rethink the city as a complex node of the eco-territorial network to substantiate the concept of urban bioregion.

Description: Although still in a provisional form, as befits a field of study still undergoing consolidation, the text tries to summarize the results that emerged from the contributions collected in the volume and from their comparison; outlining, even before real conclusions, a series of clues, cues and problematic issues with which scientific reflection will have to face in the near future. Therefore, they are to be read as many beginnings of research paths, to be followed towards a plausible way of including ecosystem services in the bioregional planning of the territory.

Description: The essay traces back the scientific dialogue between the author and Massimo Quaini about the contemporary usefulness of the geographer-cartographer figure, perfected during the period of the great absolute monarchies. In this path, which ranges among memories, literature, poetry, the story of the elaboration of the Charter celebrating the historical-morphological identity of the Levanto territory drawn up during the elaboration of the Levanto PUC finds space. In the text, Quaini’s fundamental contribution emerges in highlighting the historical cartographer as a mediator of knowledge, an aspect that is necessary today to recover in order to create an urban planning account capable of putting at the centre of the project the place, in its various expressive forms, and the settled community.

Description: Leonardo’s multifaceted experience has often been celebrated as a key historical legacy placed in a distant past. However, an interdisciplinary investigation of Leonardo’s thought, studies and design intentionality, trying to combine art and science, has highlighted the cornerstones of an ante litteram territorialist vision. To the finished product, Leonardo always prefers the knowledge of the most intimate relationships among components of the territory, always understood as a living being, thus giving posterity an immense gallery of possibilities. Therefore, Leonardo’s complex and integrated vision is a viaticum for the project of today’s manifold territory.

Description: The flourishing of literature on ecosystem services testifies to an increase in awareness of the extent to which economic operations of human societies is due to “natural” factors, so far considered as mere marginal conditions. However, this analysis appears to be flawed by an excessive of economism. It is limited to the evaluation of the effects and does not dive into the ecological relationships between community and environment. After introducing the concept of eco-territorial services, this section traces the coordinates of a more mature discussion of this topic, with important repercussions on land use planning.

Description: The short introduction reconstructs the external history of the texts collected in this volume, which are a reworking of the authors' contributions to the seminar "From territorial heritage to eco-territorial services: towards an operational definition". It also draws a quick sketch of the relationships that urge us to rethink the ecosystem services as eco-territorial services, between territorialist approach, bioregional planning, territorial heritage, and answers to be offered urgently to the problems - climatic, environmental, economic and social - posed by a society in transition.
