    Description: This chapter reviews the genetic factors affecting the composition and quality of cow's milk. It starts by discussing how different breeds of cattle can affect the composition of milk. The chapter then goes on to examine milk proteins, genetic variants and post-translational modifications. It then discusses milk coagulation and other functional properties, before highlighting the genetic influence of fatty acids on minor milk components. The chapter also discusses using mid-infrared spectroscopy for genetic parameter estimation, before concluding with a section on the possibilities for genetic improvement in relation to dairy milk.

    Description: The work describes a method for the determination of the conversion by radical photopolymerization of acrylic coatings that is suitable for an in situ monitoring during the coating process.The applied method is based on the 1620 nm overtone absorption of the acrylate end group. The capability of the sensor to discriminate between polymerized and unpolymerized coatings on metal substrates down to a coating thickness of less than 16µm is demonstrated and and proved by reference measurements.

    Description: Research software has become a central asset in academic research. It optimizes existing and enables new research methods, implements and embeds research knowledge, and constitutes an essential research product in itself. Research software must be sustainable in order to understand, replicate, reproduce, and build upon existing research or conduct new research effectively. In other words, software must be available, discoverable, usable, and adaptable to new needs, both now and in the future. Research software therefore requires an environment that supports sustainability. Hence, a change is needed in the way research software development and maintenance are currently motivated, incentivized, funded, structurally and infrastructurally supported, and legally treated. Failing to do so will threaten the quality and validity of research. In this paper, we identify challenges for research software sustainability in Germany and beyond, in terms of motivation, selection, research software engineering personnel, funding, infrastructure, and legal aspects. Besides researchers, we specifically address political and academic decision-makers to increase awareness of the importance and needs of sustainable research software practices. In particular, we recommend strategies and measures to create an environment for sustainable research software, with the ultimate goal to ensure that software-driven research is valid, reproducible and sustainable, and that software is recognized as a first class citizen in research. This paper is the outcome of two workshops run in Germany in 2019, at deRSE19 - the first International Conference of Research Software Engineers in Germany - and a dedicated DFG-supported follow-up workshop in Berlin.

    Description: There has long been a debate about climate-damaging subsidies in the German transport sector, and the financial restrictions resulting from the Federal Constitutional Court’s budget judgement at the end of 2023 have intensified the debate. This dossier is the first to convert the level of subsidies in the transport sector into negative CO2 prices to present a scientific categorisation of their significance for climate policy. The concept of implicit negative CO2 prices shows the extent to which subsidies implicitly reward citizens for emitting a tonne of CO2, rather than paying for the emissions.

    Description: Data assimilation (DA) is a key component of many forecasting models in science and engineering. DA allows one to estimate better initial conditions using an imperfect dynamical model of the system and noisy/sparse observations available from the system. Ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF) is a DA algorithm that is widely used in applications involving high-dimensional nonlinear dynamical systems. However, EnKF requires evolving large ensembles of forecasts using the dynamical model of the system. This often becomes computationally intractable, especially when the number of states of the system is very large, e.g., for weather prediction. With small ensembles, the estimated background error covariance matrix in the EnKF algorithm suffers from sampling error, leading to an erroneous estimate of the analysis state (initial condition for the next forecast cycle). In this work, we propose hybrid ensemble Kalman filter (H-EnKF), which is applied to a two-layer quasi-geostrophic turbulent flow as a test case. This framework utilizes a pre-trained deep learning-based data-driven surrogate that inexpensively generates and evolves a large data-driven ensemble of the states to accurately compute the background error covariance matrix with smaller sampling errors. The H-EnKF framework outperforms EnKF with only dynamical model or only the data-driven surrogate, and estimates a better initial condition without the need for any ad-hoc localization strategies. H-EnKF can be extended to any ensemble-based DA algorithm, e.g., particle filters, which are currently too expensive to use for high-dimensional systems.

    Description: Changing snow cover dynamics is one of the most apparent effects of climate change because of the phase change of snow to liquid water above zero degrees. Impacts of rising temperatures include less snow accumulation, a shorter snow cover season, and an earlier start of the snowmelt season, but little is known about the effects of warming on snowmelt rates. Faster snowmelt should intuitively be the response to a warmer climate. However, a few studies have shown slower snowmelt for snowpacks that melt earlier in the season when less energy (radiation) is available for melt, while others found varying responses across a limited number of sites. Northern Hemisphere scale studies showed a high spatial variability in melt rate change. Here we try to disentangle the complex and mixed effects of rising temperatures on snowmelt dynamics across climates. We use a new pan-Northern Hemisphere SWE dataset (NH-SWE dataset) based on historical snow depth observations and investigate trends in snowmelt rate change from 1981 to 2022. Snowmelt rate remains unchanged if a decrease in snowmelt days is proportional to a reduction in total snowmelt. The interplay between less total snowmelt, earlier snowmelt and its associated radiation change, and a change in temperature during the snow season determine whether snowmelt rates becomes faster or slower. This interplay largely depends on the temperature climate, especially the amplitude of yearly temperatures and the number of days with temperatures nearing zero degrees during the snow season.
