    Notes: Shrimp farmers have access to and have evaluated a diverse number of shrimp species; however, due to culture and market considerations three penaeid species (Penaeus monodon, P. orientalis and P. vunnamei) account for 80% of the world production (Weidner and Rosenbeny 1992). Although culture techniques for these species have been extensively studied and are relatively well established, they are not native to U.S. coastal waters and hence possess problems associated with the use of exotic species. Three native species P. aztecus. brown shrimp; P. duorarum, pink shrimp; and P. setiferus, white shrimp, support commercial fisheries along the Gulf states (Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council 1981). The commercial culture of these species would avoid the inherent problems associated with the culture of exotic species and allow shrimp farmers in the Caribbean basin to more effectively expand operations.

    Notes: The reaction of cowpea lines to naturally occurring Phytophthora vignae in the field was studied in three trials over the period 1987–89 with the aim of identifying and characterizing lines with partial resistance. Seven lines (CPI 84853, CPI 84851, CPI 65393, CPI 77359, CPI 78209. CPI 78213 and cultivar Blackeye 5) were found to be partially resistant. Partial resistance was assessed by calculating disease incidence, disease severity, time lag before onset of disease, relative area under the disease progress curve and apparent mortality and infection rates. Significant differences in some of the characters further divided the partially resistant lines into different groups. It was concluded that the characters found to be most useful in the differentiation of relative levels of partial resistance were final percentage infection, and final percentage of plants with non-killing lesions. There were also significant correlations between these variables within and between years, although the relative rankings of some of the lines changed between years. Overall, CPI 84853 and CPI 65393 showed higher levels of partial resistance in the field than the remaining lines. In general, the partially resistant lines gave variable reactions following hypocotyl inoculation with P. vignae. There were clear indications of host-isolate interactions, suggesting that partial resistance may be no more durable than complete resistance for this particular host-pathogen interaction.

    Notes: The serological characteristics of 215 strains of Xanthomonas albilineans from 28 locations throughout the world were investigated. Three serovars were identified by using three sera prepared against strains from different locations. The same variation among strains was observed with different serological assays: immunofluorescence. dot-blot enzyme immunoassay and agglutination. Serovar I is the largest group and consists of strains from various geographic locations such as Australia. USA (Florida), Guadeloupe. India. Mauritius. Réunion and including South Africa. Serovar II contains only strains from Africa: Burkina Faso. Cameroon. Kenya. Ivory Coast. Serovar III is the smallest group and contains strains from Caribbean islands (Guadeloupe. Saint Kitts. Martinique). Oceania (Fiji) and Asia (Sri Lanka). This serological variability should be considered when serological techniques are applied for the diagnosis of leaf-scald disease of sugarcane.

    Notes: Phosphonate (0.1 mM) significantly reduced growth of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense (Foc) race 4 grown at an optimal phosphate concentration of 0.3 mM in vitro. At higher phosphate concentrations, closer to physiological conditions within the plant, the sensitivity of Foc race 4 to phosphonate was greatly reduced, with 25 mM phosphonate required to reduce growth by 50% at 1 mM phosphate. Two isolates of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. dianthi and another race of Foc, race 1, were shown to be similar to Foc race 4 in their sensitivity to phosphonate, while another species of Fusarium, F. avenaceum, was more sensitive to phosphonate in vitro.

    Notes: Isolates of Botrytis cinerea Pers. ex Pers. from slow-developing lesions on strawberries from plants treated with iprodione or vinclozolin fungicides were found to grow on potato dextrose agar (PDA) containing 10 000 p.p.m. iprodione or 1000 p.p.m. vinclozolin. At smaller concentrations, the presence of these fungicides sometimes stimulated growth of these tolerant isolates. When isolates of B. cinerea sensitive to iprodione and vinclozolin were placed on PDA containing between 1 and 5 p.p.m. of one of these fungicides, a few of the cultures showed mycelial growth after extended incubation for seven days. These cultures were also able to grow when subcultured on fresh PDA containing 5 p.p.m. of iprodione or vinclozolin.

    Notes: Growth study was made on 96 male rats with treatments (15g diet, 03.g N/day): wheat bran (B) 5%, 2.1% neutral (NDF) and acid (ADF) detergent fibers, pectin (P), cellulose (C) and no-fiber (No-F) at two levels of energy (57 and 67 Kcal/day) for 4 wk and extended period. II. until 8 wk. In Period II. B and NDF diet resulted in significantly higher (P 〈 0.05) weight gain and protein efficiency ratio than No-F, in spite of increased fecal N excretion. Urinary N excretion was the most for NoF and the biological value the least (P 〈 0.05). Data suggest, at marginal intake of protein and energy closer to the requirement, dietary fiber has a role in the rat's growth and improved utilization of absorbed N.
