Notes: The performance of prairie grass (Bromus willdenowii Kunth) cv. Grasslands Matua was examined under mowing at five defoliation intervals (10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 d) and two defoliation heights (3 cm and 8 cm). Annual and seasonal production of both the total herbage and of Matua, and the proportion of Matua in the sward, increased with less frequent defoliation. To a lesser extent, increasing the height of defoliation increased dry matter yield. Matua tiller numbers were increased by less frequent defoliation and were greater under the 8 cm than the 3 cm defoliation height. To increase prairie grass production and persistence, rest intervals between grazings of 40 to 50 d are recommended, or alternatively, a management involving silage or hay cutting offers scope.

Notes: The Codocedo Limestone Member is a thin but laterally persistent lacustrine sequence within the red beds of the Upper Jurassic-Lower Cretaceous Quebrada Monardes Formation, in the Atacama region of northern Chile. The thick succession of clastic terrigenous sediments of the Quebrada Monardes Formation was deposited in an arid to semi-arid environment. Sedimentary facies are indicative of deposition of aeolian dunes, alluvial fans and braided streams, playa-lake mudflats, and saline lakes and coastal lagoons. The strata accumulated in a N-S elongated extensional back-arc basin on the landward side of an active volcanic arc.The 3 m thick Codocedo Limestone Member marks striking facies changes within the Quebrada Monardes Formation. It is underlain by a thick sequence of conglomerates and sandstones, deposited on alluvial fans. The limestone itself is characterized by evaporite minerals and laterally continuous laminations, indicative of deposition by vertical accretion in a perennial saline lake. The overlying siltstones and fine sandstones contain geodes and gypsum pseudomorphs and were deposited on playa-lake mudflats. The limestone therefore represents a relatively short period of lacustrine deposition within an essentially terrigenous succession. The lake was possibly formed quite suddenly, for example by damming of the basin by a lava flow.Sedimentation in the perennial lake was predominantly cyclical. Seasonal planktonic algal blooms produced millimetre-scale laminations. Interbedded with these laminites are centimetre-scale beds of evaporitic gypsum, anhydrite and minor halite. The evaporite minerals have been largely replaced by calcite, chalcedony and quartz. The centimetre-scale cycles may have resulted from periodic freshwater input into the lake. After a period of about 3000 yr the lake dried up, to be replaced by extensive playa-lake mudflats. The Codocedo Limestone Member possibly formed a plane of detachment during an early Tertiary phase of E-W directed regional compression. The limestones and evaporites were folded and extensively brecciated. This deformation probably resulted from simple shear along the bedding plane of the relatively weak evaporite minerals prior to their replacement by calcite and quartz.

Notes: Abstract Aphidius rhopalosiphi parasitises green colour forms of Sitobion avenae more frequently than brown forms. The handling time is longer for brown than for green nymphs, even when the two forms are members of the same clone. Parasite development lasts longer in brown forms than in green forms, and mortality is higher.

Notes: Summary The ability of the kidney to excrete sodium appears to depend on release of dopamine from intrarenal sources. In the present study, we have used immunohistochemistry to examine the possibility that renal dopaminergic nerves constitute one of these sources. We found that the sympathetic axons supplying cortical structures in human kidney contain tyrosine hydroxylase-like immunoreactivity but lack DOPA decarboxylase-like immunoreactivity. By contrast, the vasa recta arterioles of the renal medulla are supplied by varicose tyrosine hydroxylase-positive nerve fibres, some of which also contain DOPA decarboxylase. As DOPA decarboxylase has been demonstrated in other situations to be a selective marker for dopaminergic terminal axons, our results suggest the innervation of renal medullary blood vessels in man by both noradrenergic and dopaminergic sympathetic nerves.

Notes: Summary In order to clarify further the neural control of digestive tract function, we have compared the neuronal localization of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) and aromatic amino acid decarboxylase (AADC) in rat small intestine. Immunoreactivity for TH was found in numerous varicose axons associated with neurons of the enteric plexuses and in axons within the circular muscular coat and the mucosal villi. Axons with AADC immunoreactivity had a similar distribution, but were sparser in the enteric plexuses and musculature than those containing TH. Chronic extrinsic denervation of a segment of intestine removed all TH-positive nerves from that region. By contrast, the intensity of AADC immunoreactivity was enhanced and more AADC-positive axons were visible than in adjacent intact areas of intestine. The AADC-positive axons appear to represent the intrinsic ‘amine-handling’ neurons rather than intrinsic tryptaminergic neurons or extrinsic dopaminergic neurons, and the effect on AADC activity of removing the extrinsic nerve supply suggests that this normally exerts some restraining influence on the metabolism of the ‘amine-handling’ population.

Notes: Summary In electric fish of the family Mormyridae some primary afferent fibers conduct impulses not only from electroreceptors to the brain but also from the brain to the receptors. The efferent impulses may be elicited by electrical stimulation which is within the physiological range, i.e., by stimulation which is similar in amplitude and duration to the stimulation that is caused by the fish's own electric organ discharge. Afferent and efferent impulses in the same afferent fiber were identified by: simultaneously recording from a fiber at two different points, at the receptor and at the nerve trunk (Figs. 2C-H; 3B-D); by cutting the afferent fiber between the brain and the recording site as well as between the recording site and the periphery; and by intra-axonal recording from the afferent fiber near its entry into the brain (Fig. 4). The efferent impulses result from the central integration of a corollary discharge of the electric organ motor command with excitatory and inhibitory input from several different receptors near the one from which afferent impulses originate (Fig. 4). The centrally originating impulse may be capable of modifying the effect of signals originating in the periphery.

Notes: Summary Two cytochemical techniques were used at the ultrastructural level to study the distribution of specific axon types to different intrarenal structures in the dog. Using the chromaffin reaction to distinguish catecholaminergic fibres from other axon populations, it was found that the renal cortex of the dog is supplied only by catecholaminergic nerves. Immunostaining for tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) labelled all of the intracortical nerves, and 20% to 25% of these profiles also contained dopa decarboxylase (DDC)-immunoreactivity, indicating they were dopaminergic rather than noradrenergic. Both DDC-positive and DDC-negative axons were seen in close association (∼80 nm) with blood vessels and juxtaglomerular cells as well as tubular epithelial cells. The distribution of TH- and DDC-immunoreactive nerves in the renal cortex is compatible with existing functional evidence indicating that both dopaminergic and noradrenergic nerves are involved in the regulation of renal blood flow, tubular reabsorption and renin release.
