Beschreibung: The ozone profiles obtained from 24 balloon soundings at Uccle (50 deg 48 min N, 4 deg 21 min E) made with electrochemical ozonesondes were used as correlative data for SAGE II ozone profiles retrieved within a distance of at most 600 km from Uccle. The agreement between the two data sets is in general quite good, especially for profiles nearly coincident in time and space, and during periods of little dynamic activity over the area considered. The percent difference between the ozone column density of the mean balloon and SAGE profile is 4.4 percent (-3.3) percent in the altitude region between 10 and 26 km. From a statistical analysis it appears that there is a small but meaningful difference between the mean profiles at the level of the ozone maximum and around the 30-km level. An error analysis of both data sets give similar results, leading to the conclusion that these differences are instrumentally induced. However, differences between the mean profiles in the lower stratosphere are probably real and due to the high ozone variability in time and space in that altitude region.

Beschreibung: Walfraven photometry of established and probable members of the Orion OB1 association is presented. Effective temperature, surface gravity, luminosity and mass are derived for all stars, using atmosphere model by Kurucz (1979). Absolute magnitudes are calculated using the Straizys and Kuriliene (1981) tables. Distance moduli and visual extinctions are determined. A comparison of the visual extinctions to IRAS 100 micrometers data shows that the near edge of the Orion A and B clouds lies at a distance of approximately 320 pc, while the far edge is at approximately 500 pc. A method for deriving the ages of the subgroups by comparing theoretical isochrones to the observations in the log g, log T(sub eff) plane is presented. The derived ages suggest, contrary to earlier studies, that subgroup 1b is younger than 1c, which can possibly be explained by past geometries of the system of stars and gas. The initial mass function for Orion OB1 is derived with the aid of the Kolmogorov-Smirnoff test. Through extensive simulations, we show that it is very difficult to derive accurately the Initial Mass Function (IMF) from the available data. To within somewhat weak limits the IMF is found to be of the form xi(log M) = AM(exp -1.7 +/- 0.2) for all subgroups. The energy output of the subgroups in the form of stellar winds and supernovae is calculated and compared to the observed size and expansion velocity of the Orion-Eridanus bubble. It is shown that the energy output of the association can account for the morphology and kinematics of the interstellar medium (ISM).

Beschreibung: The monthly and daily samples of the Ap index for the interval from 1932 through 1982 were studied using the power spectrum technique. Results obtained for Bartel's period (about 27 days), the semiannual period, the dual-peak solar cycle distribution of geomagnetic storms, and certain other medium-scale periodicities are examined in detail. In addition, results on the cumulative occurrence number of storms per decade as a function of the Ap and Dst indices for the storm are presented.

Beschreibung: Spectra of the North Equatorial Belt of Jupiter were obtained in March 1992 at an unapodized resolution of 0.1/cm between 2450 and 2600/cm with the Fourier Transform Spectrometer at the 3.6 m Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) on Mauna Kea. Several emissions from the nu(sub 2) band of H3(+) were detected. The excitation temperature derived from the relative intensities of these emissions averaged over a wide range of longitudes is 800 +/- 100 K, and the H3(+) column density is 1.56(sup +1.0)(sub -0.5) x 10(exp 11)/sq. cm. In addition, several strong absorption features due to (13)CH4 were observed. A comparison between (12)CH4 and (13)CH4 absorptions allowed us to obtain a new measurement of the C-12/C-13 ratio. We found that this ratio, estimated for the first time in this spectral range, is 89 (+/- 25), in agreement with the terrestrial value.

Beschreibung: Seventy-seven extragalactic radio sources north of -2 deg declination have been observed using Mark III VLBI during 13 experiments from 1988 October to 1989 November. Radio positions derived from these observations supplement an ongoing project to define and maintain an all-sky radio/optical reference frame of 400 or more extragalactic sources with milliarcsecond (mas) accurate radio and optical positions. Positions for 11 new sources are presented along with improved positions for 54 sources already in the reference-frame catalog. An additional five sources have been determined to be unsuitable reference-frame objects. Observations of seven calibration sources tie the new positions to the existing catalog. The radio positions of the new sources have formal mean errors of about 0.7 mas in each coordinate. Sources for which improved positions are reported now have formal errors not greater than 1 mas, an improvement in some cases by as much as 85 percent. The complementary optical program is addressed briefly.

Beschreibung: High resolution IUE spectra of SN 1993J in M81 show the existence of several clouds on the line of sight. These include local galactic gas at 0 km/s, gas in M81 at -130 km/s, a cloud in the halo in of the Milky Way near -45 km/s, and an intergalactic cloud near +140 km/s. Arguments for each of these locations are given. There is little gas in M81 in front of SN 1993J and no detectable CIV at or near -130 km/s. The gas of the halo of the Milky Way shows a large amount of CIV and SiIV. The intergalactic cloud shows a large velocity width extending from +100 km/s to +200 km/s and is very prominent in the absorption lines of AlIII, SiIV, and CIV. It may be related to energetic events in the M81 group galaxies.

Beschreibung: Pressure-broadening parameters for 19 transitions of the millimeter and submillimeter wave spectrum of NO2 have been obtained experimentally. Results for broadening by N2, O2, and He are presented and compared with earlier theoretical calculations of the N2 and O2 parameters. A discussion of the relation between theoretical calculations and experimental measurements is presented.

Beschreibung: Observations from 600 Mark III VLBI experiments from 1979 to 1988, resulting in 237,681 acceptable pairs of group delay and phase delay rate observations, have been used to derive positions of 182 extragalactic radio sources with typical formal standard errors less than 1 mas. The sources are distributed fairly evenly above delta = -30 deg, and 70 sources have delta greater than 0 deg. Analysis with different troposphere models, as well as internal and external comparisons, indicates that a coordinate frame defined by this set of radio sources should be reliable at the 1 mas level. The right ascension zero point of this reference frame has been aligned with the FK5 by using the optical positions of 28 extragalactic radio sources whose positions are on the FK5 system. Because of known defects in the knowledge of astronomical constants, daily nutation offsets in longitude and obliquity were determined relative to an arbitrary reference day in the set of experiments.
