Description: Spectral observations of the central region of the Eta Carinae nebula at 4 microns have measured the Brackett-alpha hydrogen recombination-line intensity. The bulk of the line and continuum radiation arises in a small central source which is slightly narrower in the line radiation and is barely resolved by the employed beamwidth of 3.4 arcsec. The continuum radiation is well-fitted by an exponential relation to a distance of 10 arcsec from the central source. The line intensity requires a central source which emits 10 to the 49th power ionizing photons per sec into a region of electron density greater than 1 million per cu cm.

Description: To observe the medium energy component of the intense galactic center gamma-ray emission, two balloon flights of a medium energy gamma-ray spark chamber telescope were flown in Brazil in 1975. The results indicate the emission is higher than previously thought and above the predictions of a theoretical model proposed.

Description: Thin-walled, 2.54-cm diameter tubular specimens of graphite/epoxy were fatigue cycled in combinations of axial, torsional, and internal pressure loading. Two different four-ply layup configurations were tested: (0-90)s and (+ or- 45)s; each tube contained a 0.48-cm diameter circular hole penetrating one wall midway along the tube length. S-N curves were developed to characterize fatigue behavior under pure axial, torsional, or internal pressure loading, as well as combined loading fatigue. A theory was developed based on a plane stress model which enabled the S-N curve for combined stress states to be predicted from the S-N data for the uniaxial loading modes. Correlation of the theory with the experimental data proved to be remarkably good.

Description: A large volume of atmospheric constituent data is being collected in the global airlanes by specially equipped B-747 aircraft. This NASA program also obtains data from the similarly equipped NASA CV-990 aircraft during dedicated flights such as a recent near pole-to-pole latitude survey mission. Aerosol composition data are also collected with a NASA F-106 aircraft. Present measurements include ozone, carbon monoxide, water vapor, aerosol and condensation nuclei number densities, sulphates, nitrates, and the chlorofluoromethanes. Meteorological and flight parameters are also recorded for use in data analysis. The present aircraft operations obtain data between 6 and 13.5 km from 65 deg N between Europe and the North Pacific, and from 23 deg S over South America and 42 deg S over New Zealand. Typical constituent data from the aircraft operations during the first one and a half years are presented. Instrumentation is discussed.

Description: Thin walled, 2.54-cm (1-in.) diameter tubular specimens of T300/934 graphite/epoxy were fabricated and fatigue cycled in combinations of axial, torsional, and internal pressure loading. Two different four-ply layup configurations were tested: (0/90)S and (+ or - 45)S; all tubes contained a 0.48-cm (3/16-in.) diameter circular hole penetrating one wall midway along the tube length. S-N curves were developed to characterize fatigue behavior under pure axial, torsional, or internal pressure loading, as well as combined loading fatigue. A theory was developed based on the Hill plane stress model which enabled the S-N curve for combined stress states to be predicted from the S-N data for the uniaxial loading modes. Correlation of the theory with the experimental data proved to be remarkably good.

Description: Distributions of mean ozone levels from the first two years of data from the NASA Global Atmospheric Sampling Program (GASP) show spatial and temporal variations in agreement with previous measurements. The standard deviations of these distributions reflect the large natural variability of ozone levels in the altitude range of the GASP measurements. Monthly mean levels of ozone below the tropopause show an annual cycle with a spring maximum which is believed to result from transport from the stratosphere. Correlations of ozone with independent meteorological parameters, and meteorological parameters obtained by the GASP systems show that this transport occurs primarily through cyclogenesis at mid-latitudes.

Description: Determinations of tracking station locations and the gravitational constant of the earth, based on Doppler-tracking data from lunar and planetary spacecraft are presented. Two-way Doppler data obtained by the Deep Space Network of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) were used. The Deep Space Station instrumentation that JPL employed is described. How the stations were located is detailed, and the data used are discussed. Results are given together with an analysis of the errors.

Description: The major accomplishments of the GEOS-B, C-band systems project is assessed. The project objectives are given, namely: (1) primary objectives that must be met for project success; (2) secondary objectives that were sufficiently important to warrant serious consideration; and (3) other objectives that were important to the project and for which additional effort would be desirable. The primary objectives are presented and discussed in detail.
