Notes: We present an apparatus that permits quasisimultaneous measurements of several vibrating modes in a vibrating reed experiment. Position detection by laser beam deflection offers a simple setup and good sensitivity for higher modes of flexural as well as torsional vibrations. Frequency and damping from free decay data are determined by software which permits high accuracy, especially at low damping. This is particularly interesting for the measurement of the mechanical properties of thin films deposited on a low damping vibrating reed. As an example results on an Al film on a microstructurized silicon resonator are shown. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary An equation which can easily be applied to the calculation of the turbulence noise of a centrifugal fan is developed with the help of theoretically founded assumptions. Besides data on the turbulence itself, the only data necessary for the calculation of the sound power are the parameters characterising the working condition and the geometrical dimensions of the rotor. A relation between the turbulence and the fluctuating lift of the individual airfoil is developed and with it the sound power is determined. The results are then applied to the airfoil in the radial cascade. A good agreement is achieved between the analytical values and the measured ones.

Notes: Abstract Properties of Cu-2 and −6 at% Ge were investigated at several temperatures byin situ deformation experiments in an electron microscope. In particular the change of homogeneous to heterogeneous glide with alloy concentration and deformation temperature was studied. The friction stress opposing dislocation glide was estimated from analysis of groups of defects and numerical calculations and the results are connected with models based on solute atom/dislocation interactions.

Notes: Abstract The problems induced by the inhomogeneity of deformation of alloys with high solute concentration are discussed using experimental results on Cu-2...10% Ni and Cu-30% Zn single crystals. Combining microscopic observations (etch-pit/stress-pulse method) with mesoscopic studies (microcinematography of slip line formation) and with macroscopic measurements (stress relaxation) in terms of the effective activation volumes, it is inferred that theories on the motion of a dislocation across the obstacle field in the slip plane can be compared with microscopic (etch-pit) results, while the macroscopic deformation kinetics and the critical resolved shear stress in the yield region of inhomogeneously deformed alloys might rather be controlled by the transfer process of slip to neighbouring slip planes.
