Notes: Summary By exposure to formaldehyde vapor after freeze-drying large cryostat sections are brought into a stable form. These sections can be used for documentation and may be compared easily with autoradiograms made of the same slices. Furthermore, a method is shown of evaluating these sections with a thin-layer scanner and a 2π-flow counter, or by measuring quantitatively the radioactivity of single, excised organs or parts of tissues after automatic combustion by liquid scintillation counting.

Notes: Abstract The influence of a bacterial infection in Carcinus maenas both generally and with specific respect to hemolymph proteins is described. The infection shows severe effects upon the moulting cycle and general activity. The total protein concentration remains constant. Qualitative and quantitative differences between healthy and infected crabs appear, however, after electrophoretical separation (Disc-PAGE), indicating the importance of this method as an analytical tool in animal disease research. The protein pattern of the diseased crabs shows two new protein components. The origin of these additional fractions is discussed. Moreover, the levels of most other proteins, which are identified as hemocyanin subunits and a nonrespiratory protein, are higher in diseased crabs, thus indicating an elevated metabolic rate.

Notes: Summary The determination of thallium in biological materials sometimes cause problems because of the low concentrations of this toxic element. In the present work a method is described which optimizes the parameters affecting the specificity and sensitivity of the radiochemical NAA of thallium in biological samples. High thermal neutron flux, complete decomposition of the organic matter by pressurized digestion, TlI precipitations, liquid extraction of HTlBr4 and La(OH)3 scavenging purification are the steps leading to the final homogeneous preparation of Tl2CrO4 for β-activity measurement. The method was applied to various materials as bovine liver, bone and nails. Good agreement was found between certified and determined thallium concentrations of the reference material CRM 176. The chemical yield comes to about 80%, with low deviations. The sensitivity of the method is about 10−3 μg/g, the standard deviations being in the range of 3.6% (CRM 176), 14% (bovine liver), and 17% (bone). Detailed working instructions are given.

Notes: Abstract A method is reported for the determination by activation analysis of 28 elements occurring in organic and biological material in small concentrations and exhibiting as (n, γ)-products of half-life times 〉 10 hours. After irradiation and wet combustion, chemical separation of the elements may be achieved by solvent extraction and precipitation; chemical yields were ascertained on standardized mixtures. The influence of varying neutron flux was taken into account by cobalt standards. Activity measurement was done by gamma-ray scintillation spectrometry.
