Notes: Abstract Frescos and oil-paintings from the 15. and the beginning of the 16. century showing outbreaks of pests In the 15. and the beginning of the 16. century frescos and oil-paintings were created for catechetic purposes on which the Ten Commandments respectively their transgressions were confronted with the Ten Egyptian Troubles. Such paintings are still to be found in the church of the Holy Virgin at Lemgo, in the municipal church of Zierenberg (Kassel district), in the church at Nonnberg near Altoetting in Upper Bavaria, in the churcht at Werschling in Carinthia, in the municipal church at Friedberg in Hassia, in the St. Georges church at Dinkelsbuehl and in the conventual church at Benediktbeuern in Upper Bavaria. Naturally only this troubles are interesting here where calamities by vermins are presented. While in Lemgo, Zierenberg and far extending also in Dinkelsbuehl the vermins are shown more symbolic in a form of a standardized letter like on contemporary graphic designs and on older book-paintings, the vermins on the frescos at Nonnberg and on the paintings at Benediktbeuern are rendered full of life and natural. In regard to the paintings about the trouble of migratory locusts the artists of Nonnberg and Benediktbeuern have possibly produced their works under the impression of the invasion of locusts during the years from 1475 till 1477 in Tyrol, Styria and Venetia.

Notes: Abstract Damages by birds in the antique Damages by birds especially on young or on standing crops are known since the early antique. Cause of the damages were essentially the same species of birds which are also important ennemies of the farmer till to-day: daws, starlings, sparrows, throstles. From greater birds which could be dangerous mainly for the winter-corn are mentioned cranes and wild-geese. To prevent damages mostly the same simple methods were applied which play an important part not only till early modern times but also till to-day. Representations of damages by birds in a real sense are not present; at the most decorative paintings and sculptures permit some conclusions about observations in this direction.
