Notizen: The technique for staining unsaturated additives within cotton fibers reacts osmium tetroxide with a sorbyl moiety which has been attached to the cellulose chain. Resulting electron micrographs indicate that contrast is considerably enhanced. Measurements of fibrillar size averaged 0.30 nm, closely approximating the values in the literature.

Notizen: In a previous paper it was shown that the vulcanization obtained with ethylene-propylene-diene terpolymer is equivalent or superior to that obtained with ethylene-propylene copolymer when a peroxide-dimethacrylate coagent cure system was used. In order to determine the effect of the unsaturation on the physical properties in the terpolymer, the terpolymer had been hydrogenated to remove the double bonds. Infrared spectra and bromination were used to check the extent of hydrogenation. Tensile strength, Shore A hardness, per cent elongation, and modulus indicated no decrease in vulcanization efficiency after hydrogenation. The data show that the unsaturation in the terpolymer does not contribute to the vulcanization cure with the peroxide-dimethacrylate coagent curing system.

Notizen: Polyacrylonitrile sheet cast by a novel method described in Part I is clear, colorless, chemically resistant, brittle, and rather weak. It undergoes irreversible thermal changes above about 80°C., but if heated quickly, it can be oriented to give greater strength parallel to the direction of orientation. Some improvement in strength can be achieved by the use of fibrous fillers. Certain copolymers are stronger than the homopolymer but have lower softening temperatures.

Notizen: Studies have been made of the γ-induced emulsion polymerization of styrene and comparisons made with chemically initiated emulsion polymerization. The polymerization proceeded smoothly to high conversions at 0 and 60°C, the reaction showing a high G (monomer) value. Complete conversions were obtained with total doses of less than 0.05 Mrad. In accordance with the behavior expected of systems having a constant rate of initiation, the molecular weight was found to decrease with decreasing temperature. The molecular weight and particle size distributions were narrower than those obtained in chemically initiated emulsion polymerizations at the same temperature. The radiation-induced emulsion polymerization of vinyl acetate proceeded smoothly at temperatures in the range 0-50°C to give polymers of much higher molecular weight than these obtained from chemically initiated polymerizations at the same temperature. Complete conversion was attained after a dose of 0.02 Mrad for latices approaching 50% solids. The elimination of ionic endgroups in the poly(vinyl acetate) radicals tends to drive the polymerization from the aqueous phase, resulting in faster rates and higher molecular weights than are obtained from chemically initiated systems. Rates of polymerization were found to be independent of temperature and the molecular weight of the polymer to be independent of dose rate. Latices of poly(vinyl acetate) of high solids content were evaluated for latex and film properties and found to have improvements over commercially available samples in both areas, especially in clarity of film and scrub resistance. A number of acrylate and maleate esters were copolymerized with vinyl acetate in a radiation-initiated emulsion system. High molecular weight copolymers were produced after low dose.

Notizen: Elucidation of mechanisms operative in thermal oxidative degradation of hexafluoropropene oxide derived polyethers and the effect of metals on these processes are reported. Thermal oxidative instability of a commercial fluid, at moderate temperatures (550°F), was found to be due to the presence of ∼3% of thermooxidatively unstable chains believed to be hydrogen terminated; treatment at 650°F in oxygen volatilized these chains by unzipping. The resultant fluid was unaffected by oxygen at 650°F and by M-50 and Ti(4Al, 4Mn) alloys at 600°F in oxidizing atmospheres. M-50 alloy catalyzed the degradation of the hydrogen-terminated chains below and at 600°F, but after completion of this process did not affect the remainder of the fluid at these temperatures. At 650°F a chain scission process promoted by the metals constituting the alloy, or their oxides or fluorides, came into play. Ti(4Al, 4Mn) alloy in the presence of CF3COF and COF2 species, formed via decomposition of the hydrogen-terminated chains, degraded poly(hexafluoropropene oxide) fluids at 550°F by chain scissions.

Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Inhibition of steel corrosion in acid media by ammonium alkylxanthogenatesThe authors have investigated the inhibiting effect of ammonium alkylxanthogenates with different alkyl radicals (C5—C16) and ammonium groups substituted in different ways (alkyl radicals C1—C10, even with formation of 6-member ring structures with the nitrogen). The acids investigated included inorganic (sulfuric, hydrochloric, amidosulfonic) and organic acids (formic, acetic, lactic, citric). The inhibitors reduce corrosion losses as well as hydrogen absorption during pickling or cleaning of steel. The effect can be attributed not only to the presence of the S and N atoms, but also to the alkyl radicals which probably form some type of hydrophobic barrier on the metal surface. As to the reduction of hydrogen absorption the effect is observed after extended periods of time only, while no essential difference has been found between inhibited and uninhibited acids as to their effect on mechanical properties.

Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Universal accelerated weathering cabinet for weathering tests of metals and protective coatingsThe authors have developed a accelerated weathering cabinet with visual observation of specimens during the test. The temperature can be controlled between 0 and 50°C by a current of warm air and a thermostat, while a humidification device enables the relative humidity to be controlled between 50 and 95%. Aggressive additions such as sulphur dioxide, aerosols, salt spray etc. are added through a spray system. Sulphur dioxide concentrations can be controlled between 0.1 and 10 ppm and 1 to 100 ppm respectively.

Notizen: The paper is concerned with the corrosion behaviour of materials in high temperature gaseous carburisation environments and initially reviews the current ‘state-of-the-art’ in this field. Results of investigations carried out on three 25 Cr-20 Ni steels exposed to carburising H2-CH4 mixtures with a controlled carbon activity of 0.8 at 825°C and 1000°C are then presented.Kinetic data for exposure periods of up to 1100 hours are given and it is shown that gross carburisation of these alloys has occurred after only short exposures at 1000°C. The importance of alloy composition and surface condition, particularly during exposure at 825°C, is demonstrated. The results of surface and cross-sectional examinations using a range of optical, electron and X-ray techniques are reported. The use of a nuclear microprobe technique has enabled accurate carbon concentration profiles to be established and diffusion coefficients for the three alloys have been determined. In addition, the use of a magnetic technique for the non-destructive monitoring of the extent of sub-surface carburisation has been investigated.

Notizen: The change in temperature and conversion during the curing of a thermosetting resin in a slab-shaped heated mold is analyzed theoretically. Results show that there is a critical value of β = AL2/k, for which the maximum center exotherm takes place (A = Arrhenius pre-exponential factor, L = slab thickness, k = thermal conductivity). Beyond this value, increasing β decreases the center exotherm. The temperature rise at the slab center may be substantially greater than under adiabatic conditions. Wall temperature has a great effect on the process behavior, implying the need of an adequate control system. A description of the temperature profiles and conversion rates is provided and some criteria for the process design are stated.

Notizen: Among the increased structural demands now being made on both unfilled and reinforced plastics is that of dimensional stability under various performance environments. Crystalline polymers are heterogeneous materials consisting of two distinct phases and, as such, can be treated as molecular versions of engineering composites. This paper first outlines the general physical model whereby a crystalline polymer is considered to be a multi-ply laminate of unidirectionally reinforced plies. The calculational format is then detailed for the prediction of the stiffness and thermal expansion coefficient of an isotropic sheet of crystalline polymer and a sample calculation is given for quenched high density polyethylene. A data base is presented for the stiffness and thermal expansion coefficient of low and high density polyethylene having quenched, slowcooled, and annealed thermal histories. Comparison between experimental and predicted results yields good agreement in all cases to better than 25 percent. Implications and limitations of the predictive technique are discussed.
