Notes: An epizootic in pond cultured sea bass, Lateolabrax japonicus, was caused by Nocardia sp. in Taiwan, in September and October 1997. The cumulative mortality within 1 month was 17.5% (3500 out of 20 000 fish) and diseased fish were 7 months old with total lengths from 25 to 30 cm. Multiple, yellowish white nodules, 0.1–0.2 cm in diameter, were scattered in the gill, heart, liver, spleen and kidney. Histopathologically, typical granulomatous lesions appeared in those organs. The morphology of isolated bacteria from brain heart infusion (BHI) medium or Lowenstein–Jensen medium (LJM) were bead-like filaments, as shown by Ziehl-Neelsen's (ZN) staining method. The gross lesion and histopathological changes found in experimentally infected fish were similar to those in naturally infected fish. Based on the growth characteristics, morphological and biochemical properties of the bacterium, and histopathological changes, the isolated bacteria were identified as Nocardiaseriolae. This is the first report of N. seriolae-infected sea bass in aquaculture.

Notes: Abstract We have previously found that tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs) induce apoptosis in quiescent human lymphocytes. The aim of the present study was to evaluate if TCAs induce apoptosis in proliferating human lymphocytes and in established blastoid lymphocytes also. The development of conA-induced lymphoblast populations was followed by measuring the CD25 membrane expression. Three TCA compounds were run with the following concentrations: imipramine (10, 20, 30, 40, 60μ M), clomipramine (1, 10, 20, 30, 40μ M) and citalopram (40, 60, 80, 100, 180μ M). They all induced a dose-dependent apoptosis both in continuously transformed, as well as in established lymphoblasts. Preincubation of the TCA up to 48 h did not significantly increase induction of apoptosis. The three drugs tested were found to be potent inducers of apoptosis in proliferating lymphocytes. Furthermore, we found that the apoptotic populations in proliferating and in established blastoid lymphocytes were of f airly the same magnitude than in the corresponding population in TCA-incubated resting lymphocytes. In conclusion, we demonstrate that TCAs induce apoptosis in proliferating lymphocytes, as they do in quiescent lymphocytes. Furthermore, the exent of apoptosis was even more pronounced in TCA-incubated lymphoblasts compared to TCA-treated resting lymphocytes.

Notes: Abstract Gossypol, a natural polyphenolic compound, induces growth-inhibitory and antiparasitic effects inTaenia taeniaeformis metacestodes in vivo and in vitro. We investigated the uptake and localization of [3H]-gossypol in this parasite. Metacestodes were incubated in 10−5 M [3H]-gossypol at 37°C. Parasites steadily took up tritium activity over the first 3 h of incubation, after which a plateau was maintained for the duration of the experiment. Tissue: medium radioactivity ratios revealed that intralarval tritium activity matched extralarval activity within 30 min of incubation and continued to increase with time. Reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) analysis confirmed tissue incorporation of tritium activity that manifested as a single radioactive species. Autoradiography localized [3H]-gossypol to the tegument, calcareous corpuscles, and parenchyma over the first 2 h of incubation. By 6 h, parenchymal radioactivity had disappeared.T. taeniaeformis metacestodes rapidly take up and accumulate [3H]-gossypol in vitro. This accumulation is apparently selective for specific sites, which may have implications for gossypol's metacestocidal action.
