    Notes: This study assesses the nutritional status of 15 elite athletes. Their body weight, height and skinfold thickness were measured and BMI calculated. Dietary intakes were assessed using three days' dietary diaries for each athletic season. Data were collected over three athletic seasons, the transitional (vacation), the training and the competitive. The results showed that the athletes' mean energy intake decreased from the transitional to the training season. and that during the competitive season most athletes were not in energy balance. Their mean protein intake varied from 11 percent of energy intake during the transitional season, to 16 percent during the competitive season. Carbohydrates provided 41-53 percent of energy intake, whereas fat intake ranged from 32-48 percent, indicating a diet high in fat and low in carbohydrate. Dietary intakes varied among the athletes but in general they had an unbalanced nutrition. Provision of appropriate nutritional information in Greek athletic teams is needed to improve athletes' diet and performance.

    Notes: Inconsistency in flexographic platemaking techniques was perceived to influence the print quality and consistency. The results of a factorial designed experiment created to establish which platemaking factors had a significant influence on the flexographic printing quality are reported in this paper. The objective of the experiment was not only to define the optimum platemaking technique, but also to improve the understanding of the characteristics and properties of the photopolymer printing plate and to identify the key interacting factors which have the most significant effect on print quality and consistency. Various statistical methods were employed for the design of the experiment and for the interpretation of experimental data generated. The results of the investigation have been used to fine-tune the flexographic platemaking techniques to significantly manipulate the properties for the end-use application to enhance printing performance and consistency of the plates.

    Notes: The a-amylase activity of ten human saliva samples was measured using phadebas, iodine and gel-diffusion procedures. Highly significant correlations (p = 0.001) were found between the results of the three methods, namely phadebas and iodine r = –0.907, phadebas and gel diffusion r = +0.928, and iodine and gel diffusion r = –0.948. The suitability of the three methods for use in an educational context is discussed.

    Notes: 304 SS substrates have been covered with polymeric class low melting barriers, like polyurethane, acrylate and epoxy with and without incorporation of eco-friendly (non-toxic) ceramic particular of antifouling origin. The results of corrosion resistance tests are encouraging. Other physical parameters like hardness, adhesion, scratch resistance are also studied, for these synergistically organized low melting point barrier layers.

    Notes: Cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL) and resorcinol modified peanut skin extract adhesive resins were prepared. These resins were subsequently used to produce glues for sapele veneer panels. The bond properties of the plywood were evaluated and results show that the glues formulated using resorcinol modified extracts performed better than those modified with cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL). This was attributed to the high reactivity of resorcinol as compared to the cashew nut shell liquid as shown by the gel times of the various resins.

    Notes: Discusses the particulation of organic barrier layers, based on laboratory-bench data, obtained from the exposure of painted panels in low, high or neutral pHelectrolytes. It also discusses their compatibility with the succeeding and preceding layers and the galvanic interactions at the layer substrate interfaces. Aspects like substrate effect, leaching of the micaceous iron powder, role of high temperature and hydrodynamic disturbances and distribution of ultrafine particulates have been highlighted using potential versus time plot, AAS data, and galvanic current measurements and XRD analysis. Exposure tests conducted under ambient conditions and under very strong hydrodynamic disturbances, revealed superior properties of the SiC particulated epoxy based barrier layers.
