    Notes: In the present study, the homology relationships among fragments amplified by ERIC (Enterobacterial Repetitive Intergenic Consensus) and REP (Repetitive Extragenic Palindromic) primers in Drechslera avenae and Stemphylium solani causing leaf blotch and black spot of oats and leaf blight of cotton, respectively, were investigated by Southern hybridization followed by DNA sequencing. ERIC- and REP-PCR were performed for 24 isolates of D. avenae and 33 isolates of S. solani. The banding patterns obtained were transferred to nylon membranes and a total of 16 fragments, four ERIC and four REP bands from each fungus, used as probes. The hybridization and DNA sequencing revealed a low degree of similarity among the bands indicating that the regions amplified by these primers are not repetitive and that the primers anneal at random regions in the genomes of D. avenae and S. solani.

    Notes: Electron spin resonance spectra of a temperature sensitive magnetic fluid involving polydispersed Mn0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 ferrite particles are scanned from 200 to 400 K. For such a polydispersed system, the deconvolutions of the spectra suggest coexistence of two different resonance modes: (i) a broad line due to ferrimagnetic resonance and (ii) a sharp line at g=2 due to intrinsic superparamagnetic phase. From the intensity variation of the line at g=2, it is found that the contribution due to the superparamagnetic phase increases with temperature. A study of peak-to-peak linewidth variation with temperature indicates that the weakening of the magnetic moment is responsible for the observed reduction in the linewidth. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We investigate the spatiotemporal dynamics of two dimensional coupled map lattices, in the strong coupling phase, evolving under updating rules incorporating varying degrees of asynchronicity. Interestingly, we observe that parallel updates never allow synchronization among the sites, while asynchroncity has the effect of opening up windows in parameter space where the synchronized dynamics gains stability. As asynchronicity increases, the parameter range supporting synchronization gets rapidly wider. Detailed numerics, including bifurcation diagrams and patterns formed en route to synchronization, are reported. We also attempt a mean-field analysis of the system in order to try and account for the stability of the spatiotemporal fixed point under asynchronous updates. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We examine the conditions under which the small amplitude of thermal vibrations of cantilevers typically used for atomic force microscopy and sensor applications can be enhanced through a feedback mechanism. Using a simple mathematical model with two independent measurable physical parameters, a time delay τ and a gain factor G, we show that for certain values of these two parameters, such amplification is feasible. Experimental measurements of the two parameters when amplification succeeded show that these fall in the range predicted by the calculations. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The evaluation studies of the proposed repository for long-term storage of spent nuclear fuel and high-level nuclear waste at Yucca Mountain, Nevada, are underway. Fulfillment of the requirements for limiting dose to the public, which includes containment of the radioactive waste emplaced in the proposed repository and subsequent slow release of radionuclides from the Engineered Barrier System (EBS) into the geosphere, will rely on a robust waste container design, among other EBS components. Part of the evaluation process involves sensitivity studies aimed at elucidating which model parameters contribute most to the waste package and overlying drip shield degradation characteristics. The model parameters identified for this study include (1) general corrosion rate parameters and (2) stress corrosion cracking (SCC) parameters. Temperature dependence and parameter uncertainty are evaluated for the general corrosion rate model parameters while for the SCC model parameters, uncertainty treatment of stress intensity factor, crack initiation threshold, and manufacturing flaw orientations are evaluated. Based on these evaluations new uncertainty distributions are generated and recommended for future analyses. Also, early waste package failures due to improper heat treatment were added to the waste package degradation model. The results of these investigations indicate that the waste package failure profiles are governed by the manufacturing flaw orientation model parameters.

    Notes: New petrographic evidence and a review of the latest radiometric age data are taken to indicate that formation of the ultra-high pressure (UHP) eclogites within the Western Gneiss Region of Norway probably occurred within the 400–410 Ma time frame. Thus, this event took place significantly later than the previous, widely accepted age of c. 425 Ma for the timing of the high pressure metamorphism in this part of the Scandinavian Caledonides. Garnet growth under UHP (coesite-stable) conditions is recognised as a discrete, younger event following on from earlier garnet formed under firstly amphibolite facies then quartz-stable, eclogite facies conditions. Currently, the best constrained and most precise age, specifically for UHP mineral growth, is the 402 ± 2 Ma U–Pb age for metamorphic zircon (some of which retain coesite inclusions) from the Hareidland eclogite. Exhumation must have followed shortly thereafter and, based on synoptic pressure–temperature and depth–time curves, must have been very fast. Our data and those of others indicate an initial fast exhumation to about 35 km depth by about 395 Ma at a mean rate of about 10 mm a−1. This rapid exhumation rate may have been driven by the appreciable residual buoyancy of the deeply subducted continental crustal slab due to incomplete eclogitization of the dominant Proterozoic orthogneisses during the short-lived UHP event. Subsequent exhumation to 8–10 km depth by about 375 Ma occurred at a much slower mean rate of about 1.3 mm a−1 with the late-stage extensional collapse of the Caledonian orogen playing an increasingly important role, especially in the final unroofing of the Western Gneiss Region with some remarkably preserved UHP rocks.
