    Notes: This paper presents the prototype of a low-cost terrestrial mobile mapping system (MMS) composed of a van, two digital video cameras, two GPS receivers, a notebook computer, and a sound frame synchronisation system. The imaging sensors are mounted as a stereo video camera on top of the vehicle together with the GPS antennae. The GPS receivers and the notebook computer are configured to record data referred to the vehicle position at a planned time interval. This position is subsequently transferred to the road images. This set of equipment and methods provide the opportunity to merge distinct techniques to make topographic maps and also to build georeferenced road image databases. Both vector maps and raster image databases, when integrated appropriately, can give spatial researchers and engineers a new technique whose application may realise better planning and analysis related to the road environment. The experimental results proved that the MMS developed at the São Paulo State University is an effective approach to inspecting road pavements, to map road marks and traffic signs, electric power poles, telephone booths, drain pipes, and many other applications important to people's safety and welfare. A small number of road images have already been captured by the prototype as a consequence of its application in distinct projects. An efficient organisation of those images and the prompt access to them justify the need for building a georeferenced image database. By expanding it, both at the hardware and software levels, it is possible for engineers to analyse the entire road environment on their office computers.

    Notes: Complete and accurate design is critical for construction project success. Manifesting design intent in the constructed facility depends on coordinated design documents that are developed through design realization. This process evolves design intent from architects and engineers to contractors, through the production and review of shop drawings and other submittals. Information technology has been promoted as a tool to improve this process, but is not being fully utilized for this purpose. A case study investigates the impacts of computed aided design (CAD) on design realization. Comparative analysis between shop drawings prepared by hand and those done with CAD quantify notes, corrections and information transfer errors. Results support the hypothesis that utilizing CAD can improve design accuracy and lower project costs. Barriers to wider adoption, implications for practice and further research are discussed.

    Notes: Basement defects such as water seepages/leakages are tedious and expensive to rectify. Intensive research has been conducted to study the problem type, their causes and preventive measures. The study explored 987 water seepage/leakage cases in 61 buildings. Eleven significant factors leading to the occurrence of water seepage in basements were identified. The implications of six benchmarks, namely: degree of water-tightness; safety measures for structural concrete; performance of waterproofing systems; integrity of basement structure; provision for movement and quality of compaction in concreting, for minimizing four types of water seepage/leakage problems in basements are discussed.

    Notes: This paper discusses some important findings from a research project on the maintainability of wet areas of high-rise non-residential, buildings. The implications of six key factors of maintainability namely water-tightness, spatial, integrity, ventilation, material and plumbing on the occurrence of 14 most common defects found in wet areas were evaluated. Problem areas evaluated include water leakage from ceiling, staining/discolouration, paint defects, cracking/spalling of concrete, cracking/debonding of tiles, fungi/algae growth, pipe leakage and corrosion. An industry wide survey was conducted and the factors including workmanship, design detailing, maintenance and material incompatibility under tropical conditions are identified and discussed.

    Notes: The growth of facility or facilities management as an academic discipline and a set of "real world" practices has been accompanied by continuing uncertainty as to how the field should be defined. That this issue remains a "live" one is reflected in the various academic and professional commentaries on the subject. Explores the nature of facilities management in the context of vocational education and draws parallels with the field of hospitality management which has experienced comparative debates about scope and meaning. Existing perspectives on the definition of facilities management are reviewed and examination is made as to how intellectual linkages may be established with broader issues in the development of non-traditional fields of study. Concludes with consideration of one model for resolving the apparent tensions attendant on defining facilities management involving separation of the conceptual meaning of the terms "facility" and "facilities" from the set of practices that constitute "facilities management".

    Notes: : Drinking of arsenic-contaminated tubewell water has become a serious health threat in Bangladesh. Arsenic contaminated tubewells are believed to be responsible for poisoning nearly two-thirds of this country's population. If proper actions are not taken immediately, many people in Bangladesh will die from arsenic poisoning in just a few years. Causes and consequences of arsenic poisoning, the extent of area affected by it, and local knowledge and beliefs about the arsenic problem — including solutions and international responses to the problem — are analyzed. Although no one knows precisely how the arsenic is released into the ground water, several contradictory theories exist to account for its release. Initial symptoms of the poisoning consist of a dryness and throat constriction, difficulty in swallowing, and acute epigastric pain. Long-term exposure leads to skin, lung, or bladder cancer. Both government and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) in Bangladesh, foreign governments, and international agencies are now involved in mitigating the effects of the arsenic poisoning, as well as developing cost-effective remedial measures that are affordable by the rural people.

    Notes: At the Delft University of Technology (DUT), the data of six stations participating in the first international GLONASS (Global Navigation Satellite System, the Russian counterpart of GPS) tracking campaign, IGEX-98, were analyzed with integrity monitoring software. The software was developed at the Department of Mathematical Geodesy and Positioning of DUT. The main function of this software is to detect slips and outliers in phase and code observations in real time. In addition, the software also allowe the validation of the information contained in the broadcast navigation messages. The results of the IGEX-98 data analyses will be presented in a three-part series. In this second part of the series, GLONASS outlier and slip statistics will be discussed in detail. The first part was concerned with the availability of GLONASS observations, while in the third one the broadcast navigation message validation results will be considered. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: The International GLONASS Experiment 1998 (IGEX-98) was the first international tracking campaign of the Russian counterpart to the Global Positioning System (GPS), GLONASS. Started in October 1998, the campaign was originally scheduled to last for three months. However, the launch of additional GLONASS satellites and a widespread enthusiasm among the participants led to an indefinite continuation of the campaign on a “best effort” basis. At the Delft University of Technology, the data of six IGEX-98 stations have been analyzed in detail with integrity monitoring software, developed at the Department of Mathematical Geodesy and Positioning of the University. The software aims to detect outliers and slips in code and phase observations in real time. In addition, the software also allows the validation of the information contained in the broadcast navigation messages. The results of the IGEX-98 data analyses will be presented in a three-part series. In the second part, GLONASS outlier and slips statistics will be discussed, while in the third part the anomaly detection results of the GLONASS and GPS messages will be shown. In this first part of the series, however, the most basic of all statistics will be considered: a simple day-to-day count of the number of GLONASS and GPS observations. Although simple, this statistic yields a surprising amount of information both on the availability of the GLONASS satellites and on the peculiarities of some of the receiver makes participating in the IGEX-98 campaign. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
