    Notes: A minor stabilization effect was found for the content of total lipids, total fatty acids and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) when Artemia franciscana was maintained at high concentrations of Isochrysis galbana for 72 h at 12 °C, both in 3- and 4-day-old individuals. The eicosapentaenoic (EPA) level was only stabilized at higher algal concentrations in the 4-day-old A. franciscana. In the 3-day-old A. franciscana, the EPA content increased at all algal concentrations during the first 24 h of post enrichment, presumably as an effect of DHA catabolism. Apparently, the 4-day-old A. franciscana metabolized DHA, and other lipids, faster than the 3-day-old A. franciscana did. During the 72 h incubation with I. galbana, the content of ascorbic acid (AA) in A. franciscana increased approximately to 1000–1200 μg g–1 dry weight (DW) at algal concentrations above 3 mg C L–1, close to AA content of the algae. The vitamin B6 content in A. franciscana decreased from approximately 20 to 4–11 μg g–1 DW, with highest loss rates at the higher algal concentrations. The thiamin content of A. franciscana was independent of algal concentration and remained at 20–30 μg g–1 DW. The nutritional effects of the algal incubation on the 3- and 4-day-old A. franciscana at algal concentrations which can be used during the cultivation of Atlantic-halibut larvae (〈2 mg C L–1) was insignificant, except for the small enrichment effect of AA already at 1 mg C L–1. Other beneficial effects of the algae should not be ruled out, like possible effects on the microflora of A. franciscana even at algal concentrations less than 2 mg C L–1.

    Notes: Summary. We estimate condition numbers of $p$ -version matrices for tensor product elements with two choices of reference element degrees of freedom. In one case (Lagrange elements) the condition numbers grow exponentially in $p$ , whereas in the other (hierarchical basis functions based on Tchebycheff polynomials) the condition numbers grow rapidly but only algebraically in $p$ . We conjecture that regardless of the choice of basis the condition numbers grow like $p^{4d}$ or faster, where $d$ is the dimension of the spatial domain.

Nitrate leaching after one year of a cut grass/clover ley was measured in two succeeding years to investigate how the postponing of ploughing leys from early to late autumn or spring, in combination with spring or winter cereals affected leaching of nitrate. The experiment was conducted as three field trials, two on a coarse sandy soil and one on a sandy loam soil. For calculation of nitrate leaching, soil water samples were taken using ceramic suction cups. The experiments started in spring in a first year ley and ended in spring three years later. Total nitrate leaching for the three year periods for each trial ranged between 160–254 and 189–254 kg N/ha on the coarse sand and 129–233 kg N/ha on the sandy loam. The results showed that winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) did not have the potential for taking up the mineralized N in autumn after early autumn ploughing of grass/clover leys, and that the least leaching was generally found when ploughing was postponed until spring, and when winter rye (Secale cereale L.) was grown as the second crop rather than spring barley (Hordeum vulgare L.). Nevertheless, leaching was generally high in the winter period even when winter rye was grown. On these soil types ploughing out should be postponed, whenever possible, to spring. Crop systems that maximize the utilization of mineralized N and thereby minimize nitrate leaching need to be further developed. Based on N balances, the data were further used to estimate the biological N fixation by the clover.

    Notes: Abstract. Daily measurements of precipitation and temperature at 82 locations in Denmark for periods of 10 to 43 years, were used for calculation of the impact energy and intensity of rain, climatic erosivity (hereafter called erosivity). The computed erosivity values were analysed for trends and variations in time and space. Analysis of 43 years of data from 6 locations showed a change in the annual distribution of intense (erosive) precipitation, with a tendency to bi-modality, increasing erosivity in September, and decreasing erosivity in August. Amounts of precipitation in autumn have generally increased, but the erosive power of rain has increased even more. The geographic location of high erosivity varied considerably from year to year. Using a simple crop model, the interaction between crop cover and erosivity was investigated. This suggested that changes in climate in combination with changes in cropping and management practice have increased risk of serious erosion over the period 1954 to 1996. We recommend that present and future cropping and management practices be evaluated for risk of adverse interaction with high erosivity events.

    Notes: Using a valence double-zeta polarization basis, full configuration–interaction (FCI) calculations are carried out on water at its equilibrium geometry and at geometries where the OH bond lengths are stretched until dissociation. At the same geometries and with the same basis set configuration interaction calculations at excitation levels up to hextuples, multireference singles doubles configuration interaction calculations, coupled cluster calculations at excitation levels up to quadruples, Møller–Plesset perturbation theory calculations through order fifteen, and complete active space second-order perturbation theory calculations are also carried out. The static correlation contribution increase with increasing bond length. The calculations show that the coupled cluster approach has a remarkable ability to describe even relatively large static correlation contributions. The single reference perturbation expansion breaks down for larger OH bond length, while the multireference approach preserves the accuracy for the whole potential curve. At the equilibrium geometry, FCI calculations have also been carried out for the lowest state of 2A1, 2B1, and 2B2 symmetry of H2O+, and the results compared with state of the art correlation results for total energies and ionization potentials (IP's). Differential energies (IP's) are obtained more accurately than absolute (total) energies in the size extensive coupled cluster and perturbation approaches. For the nonsize extensive configuration interaction method errors are obtained of the same size for differential and absolute energies. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We summarize and discuss some of the available experimental and theoretical data important for understanding the role played by subsurface sites in dissociative chemisorption calculations for the H2/Pd(111) system. Then we use a semi-empirical potential energy surface (PES) to model the interaction of a H2 molecule impinging on a Pd(111) surface. The London–Eyring–Polanyi–Sato (LEPS) construction has been extended to make direct subsurface absorption possible. A two-dimensional wave packet calculation is used to find qualitative trends in the direct subsurface absorption and to reveal the time scales involved. We suggest that a partial in-plane relaxation occurs for the slowest incoming particles, thus resulting in a higher direct subsurface absorption probability for low energies. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The one- and two-photon dipole transitions between the X 1Σ+ and the A 1Π states of CO have been studied by means of multiconfiguration self-consistent-field linear and quadratic response methods. The vibrationally averaged oscillator strength for the 0–0 one-photon dipole transition between the X 1Σ+ and A 1Π states obtained using the linear response method is 1.31×10−2 as compared to the experimental results of 0.96(14)×10−2, 1.08(7)×10−2, and 1.11×10−2. The two-photon transition probability rate constant, obtained using the quadratic response method, for the 0–1 vibrational band of the X–A transition of 7×10−59 cm4 s is more than six orders of magnitude smaller than the experimental result of 3.5×10−52 cm4 s. We suggest that the experiment should be reconsidered. The dipole moment of the A 1Π state obtained from quadratic response calculations on the ground state at R=2.332 a.u. is −0.0441 a.u. suggesting an anomalous polarity also for the A 1Π state. The experimental value is ±0.059(20) a.u. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.
