    Notizen: This study assesses the nutritional status of 15 elite athletes. Their body weight, height and skinfold thickness were measured and BMI calculated. Dietary intakes were assessed using three days' dietary diaries for each athletic season. Data were collected over three athletic seasons, the transitional (vacation), the training and the competitive. The results showed that the athletes' mean energy intake decreased from the transitional to the training season. and that during the competitive season most athletes were not in energy balance. Their mean protein intake varied from 11 percent of energy intake during the transitional season, to 16 percent during the competitive season. Carbohydrates provided 41-53 percent of energy intake, whereas fat intake ranged from 32-48 percent, indicating a diet high in fat and low in carbohydrate. Dietary intakes varied among the athletes but in general they had an unbalanced nutrition. Provision of appropriate nutritional information in Greek athletic teams is needed to improve athletes' diet and performance.

    Notizen: Experimental studies were undertaken at Hollings Faculty, Manchester Metropolitan University, whereby soybean curd or tofu was incorporated into a range of sauces and casserole products. The newly developed products were then subjected to taste, texture and overall acceptability acceptance by targeted groups of consumers. The results of the study indicate that the potential market for tofu in the UK has not been fully exploited.

    Notizen: Inconsistency in flexographic platemaking techniques was perceived to influence the print quality and consistency. The results of a factorial designed experiment created to establish which platemaking factors had a significant influence on the flexographic printing quality are reported in this paper. The objective of the experiment was not only to define the optimum platemaking technique, but also to improve the understanding of the characteristics and properties of the photopolymer printing plate and to identify the key interacting factors which have the most significant effect on print quality and consistency. Various statistical methods were employed for the design of the experiment and for the interpretation of experimental data generated. The results of the investigation have been used to fine-tune the flexographic platemaking techniques to significantly manipulate the properties for the end-use application to enhance printing performance and consistency of the plates.

    Notizen: When sustainable development (SD) is only taught in specific courses, it is questionable if engineering students are able to integrate it into their engineering practices and technical designs. For this reason, sustainability should also be integrated into regular engineering courses, e.g. design courses, materials courses or processing technology. The SD education plan adopted by the board of Delft University of Technology (DUT) in 1998 was based on this philosophy. It consists of three interconnected activities for all engineering curricula: the implementation of an elementary course "Technology in sustainable development"; the development of a graduation program in sustainable development for students who want to specialize; and the integration of sustainable development in all regular courses, wherever applicable. This paper describes various activities that the project group carried out to stimulate and support the third strategy: SD integration. It turned out that top-down attempts to influence the content of courses often triggered resistance among lecturers, as they feared the intermingling of laymen into their scientific/engineering discipline. Interaction was important but was often impossible by lack of mutual understanding. Participation in a national project aimed to stimulate discussion by making disciplinary sustainability reviews of academic/engineering disciplines. This approach was promising as it created the base for serious discussions. However, the reports often ended in the bureaucracies of the departments. More positive results were achieved with a semi-consultant approach directed at discussing SD issues with individual lecturers. Many lecturers were willing to discuss their courses, and were interested in practical ideas to integrate sustainability. This interactive approach is promising because it does not conflict with academic culture and keeps the lecturer in charge of his own course.

    Notizen: What system does a university need to optimise its progress to sustainability? Discusses the gradation of approaches possible for a university as it strives to improve its environmental performance. Argues that an environmental policy plus mechanisms for its implementation can be adequate, and endorsement of a single formal EMS need not be necessary. Illustrates this with progress at Lincoln University, the smallest public university in New Zealand. Lincoln University introduced its environmental policy in 1992, but its full implementation was delayed due to pressures on the tertiary sector in New Zealand. However, a new policy has now been adopted and an environmental task force established. Also briefly addresses the following topics: why have an environmental policy?; the establishment and content of the Lincoln University environmental policy; putting the policy into practice - an example based on waste reduction; and a discussion of the main obstacles to progress, in the current university climate.

    Notizen: The a-amylase activity of ten human saliva samples was measured using phadebas, iodine and gel-diffusion procedures. Highly significant correlations (p = 0.001) were found between the results of the three methods, namely phadebas and iodine r = –0.907, phadebas and gel diffusion r = +0.928, and iodine and gel diffusion r = –0.948. The suitability of the three methods for use in an educational context is discussed.

    Notizen: 304 SS substrates have been covered with polymeric class low melting barriers, like polyurethane, acrylate and epoxy with and without incorporation of eco-friendly (non-toxic) ceramic particular of antifouling origin. The results of corrosion resistance tests are encouraging. Other physical parameters like hardness, adhesion, scratch resistance are also studied, for these synergistically organized low melting point barrier layers.

    Notizen: Cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL) and resorcinol modified peanut skin extract adhesive resins were prepared. These resins were subsequently used to produce glues for sapele veneer panels. The bond properties of the plywood were evaluated and results show that the glues formulated using resorcinol modified extracts performed better than those modified with cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL). This was attributed to the high reactivity of resorcinol as compared to the cashew nut shell liquid as shown by the gel times of the various resins.

    Notizen: Peanut skin tannin extract-formaldehyde condensates were modified with resorcinol and cashew nut shell liquid. The copolymer resins formed were used as thermosetting and cold-setting exterior grade wood adhesives for Sapele veneer panels. Results obtained showed that, on addition of paraformaldehyde, the resins modified with resorcinol cured at ambient temperatures while those modified with cashew nut shell liquid cured at higher temperatures. The bonded panels developed strength and durability satisfying the requirements of International Standard Specification for phenolic resin adhesives.

    Notizen: Discusses the particulation of organic barrier layers, based on laboratory-bench data, obtained from the exposure of painted panels in low, high or neutral pHelectrolytes. It also discusses their compatibility with the succeeding and preceding layers and the galvanic interactions at the layer substrate interfaces. Aspects like substrate effect, leaching of the micaceous iron powder, role of high temperature and hydrodynamic disturbances and distribution of ultrafine particulates have been highlighted using potential versus time plot, AAS data, and galvanic current measurements and XRD analysis. Exposure tests conducted under ambient conditions and under very strong hydrodynamic disturbances, revealed superior properties of the SiC particulated epoxy based barrier layers.
