    Notes: Abstract Sintered plate Cd electrodes have been studied in alkaline solutions using potentiostatic and galvanostatic techniques. The behaviour is, in many ways, similar to that of a flat Cd electrode. A pseudo steady-state current is found due to the dissolution of Cd as Cd(OH)2−4. At more anodic potentials passivation occurs due to the solid state formation of Cd(OH)2. This model can account for the results obtained on galvanostatic discharge.

    Notes: The influences of the conditioning treatments, surface topography, and crystal structure of carbonaceous surfaces on their ability to sorb heparin and their in vivo compatibility with blood were investigated. The results of the sorption studies indicated that the adsorption of heparin on the surfaces of turbostratic and graphitic materials is not crystallographically selective and that the amount adsorbed on relatively smooth surfaces is near the amount expected for monolayer formation. Although the adsorption of heparin on relatively smooth carbon surfaces is not influenced by the presence of benzalkonium chloride, the sorption of heparin in porous carbons can be greatly increased by a pretreatment with benzalkonium chloride. This increase was found to be due to the formation and entrapment of the insoluble heparin-benzalkonium complex in the accessible porosity. Since the heparin sorptions in Dag-154 coatings were found to be enhanced by a pretreatment with benzalkonium chloride, it was inferred that these coatings contain accessible porosity and that their initial thromboresistance depends on the formation of the benzalkonium-heparin complex in pores. In vivo tests showed that polished and outgassed, impermeable isotropic carbons deposited at low temperatures were significantly thromboresistant without the exogenous application of heparin. There was no relationship between the amount of heparin sorbed on these materials and their compatibility with blood. Polishing, for example, which reduced heparin sorption, enhanced the thromboresistance of these carbons, and while chemisorption of oxygen markedly reduced their thromboresistance, it did not influence the amount of heparin that could be sorbed. Although the heparin-benzalkonium complex sorbed in a porous carbon conferred excellent thromoboresistance in a 2-hr test, the long-tern (14-day) compatibility was not as good as for carbon surfaces that were deposited at low temperatures and then polished and outgassed prior to implanting. In vivo tests of HTI carbon structures and annealed LTI carbons indicate that the blood compatibility of a turbostratic carbon is not significantly dependent on crystallite size, Le. Limited tests of surfaces that had a preponderance of c-faces oriented parallel to the blood-carbon interface at the surface suggest that orientations of this sort are better than others.

    Notes: Purpose - Optimisation in electromagnetics, based on finite element models, is often very time-consuming. In this paper, we present the space-mapping (SM) technique which aims at speeding up such procedures by exploiting auxiliary models that are less accurate but much cheaper to compute. Design/methodology/approach - The key element in this technique is the SM function. Its purpose is to relate the two models. The SM function, combined with the low accuracy model, makes a surrogate model that can be optimised more efficiently. Findings - By two examples we show that the SM technique is effective. Further we show how the choice of the low accuracy model can influence the acceleration process. On one hand, taking into account more essential features of the problem helps speeding up the whole procedure. On the other hand, extremely simple auxiliary models can already yield a significant acceleration. Research limitations/implications - Obtaining the low accuracy model is not always straightforward. Some research could be done in this direction. The SM technique can also be applied iteratively, i.e. the auxiliary model is optimised aided by a coarser one. Thus, the generation of hierarchies of models seems to be a promising venue for the SM technique. Originality/value - Optimisation in electromagnetics, based on finite element models, is often very time-consuming. The results given show that the SM technique is effective for speeding up such procedures.

    Notes: Abstract Based on the WKB solution of the wave equation, a discussion of the polarization rotation of Gaussian beams in focusing fibres is given. Near the focusing region the change of polarization has been found to be appreciable. The finite longitudinal size of fibres has been found to reduce the effective length of samples for wave focusing.

    Notes: Abstract A method is proposed to suppress the spikes in the output of solid-state lasers, using passive negative feedback. A saturable absorber, normally used for Q-switching the laser, is used in a modified laser resonator, so that the resonator losses increase with laser intensity. The rate equations of a laser with such a loss mechanism are solved numerically. Numerical results for a ruby laser are presented.

    Notes: Abstract Velocity profiles and turbulence levels have been investigated in a Mach 2 wind-tunnel using a laser anemometer which directly measures the Doppler frequency shift in the scattered laser light. The experiments were performed with the wind-tunnel operating at normal humidity. However, ice particles were always produced in the supersonic throat, making artificial seeding unnecessary. These ice particles proved to be excellent light scattering centres, and were found to respond to the rapid velocity change occurring in an oblique shock wave in a distance 〈0.01 cm, from which the ice particle size was calculated to be 〈0.1μ. Measurements were made across a turbulent boundary layer and compared with Pitot tube data taken under similar conditions. Measurements were also made in a highly turbulent Mach 1 free jet.

    Notes: Abstract Omitting the dispersion of side bands, the self-distortion of an amplitude-modulated e.m. signal due to non-linear polarizability in nonparabolic semiconductors has been investigated. The distortion is basically due to self-focusing of the electromagnetic wave and is different from the resistive (absorption) type demodulation. In n-InSb and at average powers of ∼1 W the index of modulation is found to increase four times at a modulation frequency R~108 s−1.

    Notes: Abstract Kingston and McWhorter's theory of mode conversion in second harmonic generation with a thin crystal [1] has been extended to include all positions of the crystal relative to the focus of the fundamental beam. Phase differences between the harmonic modes are predicted which depend upon the crystal position. Experiments to test these predictions have been performed with a 1.15 μm helium-neon laser and non-critical phase-matching in lithium niobate. Results are presented for a number of fundamental modes.
