Notes: The modulated optical reflectance (MOR) technique is shown to provide a room temperature, noncontact, nondestructive and high spatial resolution means of assessing high temperature superconducting (HTS) thin film quality. Room temperature MOR characterizations of a number of 8 GHz planar HTS resonators indicating a range of property variations and local degradations in HTS film performance are shown to be consistent with results obtained at low temperatures by the electron beam induced voltage contrast technique. The microwave performances of some of the resonators are found to exhibit nonlinear characteristics that can be explained by HTS defects revealed by the MOR technique. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Thermal edge effects for a cracklike defect have been calculated using the Wiener–Hopf technique. These have been used in an analytical model to explain transient thermographic image formation. The analysis has led to a simple method for defect sizing which is demonstrated using experimental results.

Notes: Abstract Dynamic mechanical and thermal analysis (DMTA) has been used to study the effects of surface treatment of carbon fibres on the viscoelastic properties of composites containing them. The fibres were treated by dip-coating, electro-polymerization, and plasma polymerization, and the behaviour of these fibres is compared with that of fibres treated by ordinary commercial oxidation and sizing procedures. Analysis of the experimental results is made both in terms of conventional approaches to viscoelastic behaviour and of the power-law analysis of the glass transition in an attempt to obtain suitable parameters for the evaluation of the effects of surface treatment.
