Notes: A two-dimensional mathematical model for acid leaching of copper from mine tailings using injection and pumping wells is presented. The model considers the transport mechanisms of convection and dispersion with reactions that govern the fates of copper and acid. Reactions considered are acid neutralization, copper solubilization, and copper adsorption. The results of acid leaching experiments in laboratory columns (one- dimensional) and in the field at a tailings impoundment are presented. The proposed model was validated for a one-dimensional experiment, and the model parameter fitting was found to be adequate in terms of the field experiment.

Notes: Abstract. FerroMagnetic Resonance (FMR) measurements of polycrystalline nickel ferrites at 11 GHz from 77 to 400 K have been carried out. The different contributions to the FMR linewidth have been studied by a computational technique based on the parameters previously obtained for single-crystal nickel ferrite. A new qualitative comparison between the FMR and disaccommodation measurements by means of the induced anisotropy formalism is presented.

Notes: Abstract A great interest is being taken in the measurement of concrete permeability because of increased concerns about the durability of concrete when exposed to aggressive environments. However, the variation of the concrete permeability with time has not been systematically studied. Air permeability results recorded for 20 years in six 0.2 m3 concrete slabs are presented. These results have a qualitative value as boundary effects are unknown. The great difference in flow between the specimens with the same mix design, casting and curing procedure, which have been kept in the same testing room sheltered from rain, is noticeable. The air permeability coefficient increases with time, reaching an almost stable value after 20 years. The pore evaporated water creates a path for air flow through the concrete and this is supposed to be the main cause of the increase in permeability. The method presented in this paper gives reliable information about the quality of the concrete studied in terms of air permeability and hence, durability.

Notes: Abstract A simple, sensitive and selective method by solvent extraction-first derivative spectrophotometry is described for the determination of microamounts of copper in water by means of its reaction and extraction at pH 8.0 with 3-(4-phenyl-2-pyridinyl-5-phenyl-1,2,4-triazine) (PPT) and picrate (2,4,6-trinitro-phenol) into 1,2-dichloroethane. Copper was thus determined in the range 7.5–350 ng/ml with a detection limits (3σ) of 2.3 ng/ml. The relative standard deviations were in all instances less than 2.0%. The proposed method was successfully applied for the determination of copper in several kinds of water.

Notes: This article describes the hydrolytic degradation of a series of nylons based on methylated L-tartaric acid and diamines. These polytartaramides were prepared by a solution polycondensation process using bis(pentachlorophenyl)-2,3-O-dimethyl-L-tartrate and N,N′-bis(trimethylsilyl)alkanediamines with 6, 8, or 12 methylene groups. The stereoregular optically active polyamides obtained were soluble in chloroform and showed intrinsic viscosities between 1.0 and 2.7 dL g-1. The degradation of these polytartaramides in the form of discs has been investigated in buffered salt solutions of pH 2.3, 7.4, and 10.6, and at temperatures of 37, 55, and 70°C. The degradation was monitored by following the changes in molecular weight, mass loss, chemical constitution, and thermal properties. Our results show that these polytartaramides degrade slowly at 37°C, with a degradation rate highly depending upon the number of methylenes in the diamine unit of the polyamide. The pH of the medium has also a great influence on degradation, as well as the temperature, with an important hydrolysis rate enhancement at 70°C. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
