Notes: The following measurements were carried out on the melts of two samples of polypropylene, one with a narrow and one with a broad molecular weight distribution: viscosity in steady shear flow, dynamic storage and loss moduli, total normal thrust in cone-and-plate apparatus, and flow birefringence. The validity of various theoretical interrelations between the measured quantities is checked. The influence of molecular weight distribution is qualitatively discussed.

Notes: A sensitive method for the simultaneous determination of bufuralol and its pharmacologically active metabolites in human plasma is described. The O-trimethylsilyl,N-trifluoroacetyl derivatives are assayed by mass fragmentography. Sensitivity is 1 ng ml-1 plasma for bufuralol and about 250 pg ml-1 for the metabolites. An alternative procedure which uses gas chromatography with electron capture detection is also described. The sensitivity of this is about 10 ng ml-1 plasma for all drug-related components.

Notes: The utility of benzoyl and pentadeuterobenzoyl derivatives of peptide methyl esters for mass spectrometric analysis was investigated. The mass spectra of the glu-his and the val-tyr-pro derivatives are discussed. Treatment of the peptide methyl esters with the mixed benzoic-ethyl-carbonic anhydride did in some cases lead to benzoyl derivatives as well as to ethoxycarbonyl derivatives.

Notes: The synthesis of 3-methyl-3-butyl-2-azetidinone, which forms a polymer which is soluble in a number of common solvents including toluene, chloroform, and carbon tetrachloride, is described. Anionic polymerization, carried out in toluene solution in a calorimetric vessel, yielded for the heat of polymerization of a four-membered lactam -19.1 kcal/mole at 25°C.

Notes: Under a variety of conditions it has not been possible to induce the free-radical-initiated homopolymerization of α-methacrylophenone (α-MAP). The only product isolated from such efforts was the Diels-Alder dimer of the monomer. A Mayo-Lewis plot of the free-radical copolymerization of α-MAP and styrene shows considerable scatter but the copolymer composition indicates that an α-MAP unit can add to itself. These results have been ascribed to a penultimate effect. α-MAP is homopolymerized by dimsylsodium or n-butyllithium. Attempted copolymerization of α-map and styrene with n-butyllithium produces 〉95% α-MAP. Unexpectedly, α-MAP does not homopolymerize with lithium dispersion, but does react in the presence of styrene to give product containing a relatively small amount of α-MAP.

Notes: A method is given for generating the Yamanouchi-Kotani genealogical spin eigenfunctions which requires neither storage of eigenfunctions for smaller numbers of electrons, nor summations of large order, nor explicit use of results from the theory of representations of the symmetric group. An explicit formula is given for the coefficients of expansion in terms of spin products.

Notes: Another possible application of a previously reported approximation theory for electron repulsion integrals using rigorous error bounds is considered by incorporating the electron density matrix in the approximation scheme. Error bounds are set on the contribution of a given integral to the total energy for a given molecular wave-function; the wave-function is then refined cyclically and additional integrals are computed exactly if necessary until convergence is achieved.

Notes: Löwdin has formulated a useful criterion for testing the completeness of an expansion basis set. From this criterion one may obtain an incompleteness coefficient for a truncated (finite) basis set. We have investigated the significance of this incompleteness coefficient for some of the basis sets we have used in our recent calculations of bounds to quantum mechanical properties. The similarity of the convergence properties between our bounds and the incompleteness coefficient suggests that Löwdin's criterion is likely to be useful in practice.

Notes: The energy component of the stress has been determined for poly(vinyl alcohol) networks in swelling equilibrium with a series of water-ethylene glycol compositions. The data are analyzed by using the equations describing the thermoelasticity of networks in swelling equilibrium. The ratio fe/f of the energy component to the total force, as calculated from these equations, varies systematically with diluent composition but is independent of elongation in a given diluent. For a network crosslinked by terephthalaldehyde, fe/f varied from -0.33 to -0.42 as the diluent composition was changed from pure water to 20% ethylene glycol. Similar effects were found in a network crosslinked by formaldehyde. It is not yet certain whether this effect represents a real solvent dependence of fe/f or a failure of the equation of state to account for the effect of composition changes on the force.
