Notes: The coding sequence of the cyanogenic α-hydroxynitrile lyase gene of Manihot esculenta Crantz (cassava) was cloned in the plasmid vector pMal-c2 and expressed in Escherichia coli strain JM105. DNA sequencing showed that the recombinant plasmid contained the same sequence as the cDNA clone pHNL10. Peptide sequencing of the recombinant protein showed that the N-terminus was heterogeneous, with either four or six additional amino acid residues compared with the native protein. Circular dichroism spectra indicated similar secondary structure contents for both proteins. Enzyme assays showed that specific activity of native and recombinant proteins were 0.24 and 0.26 mmol CN-/mg/min, respectively; that both proteins had optimal activity at 40°C and pH 5.5; and that both proteins were inhibited by the serine protease inhibitor phenyl-methane sulfonyl flouride (PMSF). Isoelectric focusing of native and recombinant protein revealed multiple isoforms for both proteins; the recombinant protein had a more basic mean isoelectric point (pl) (5.1) than the native protein (4.5). © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Notes: Kac distinguished between typical and atypical finite-dimensional irreducible representations of the Lie superalgebras sl(m/n) and provided an explicit character formula appropriate to all the typical representations. Here, the range of validity of some character formulas for atypical representations that have been proposed are discussed. Several of them are of the Kac–Weyl type, but then it is proved that all formulas of this type fail to correctly give the character of one particular atypical representation of sl(3/4). Having ruled out, therefore, all such formulas, a completely new extension of the Kac–Weyl character formula is proposed. The validity of this formula in the case of all covariant tensor irreducible representations is proved, and some evidence in support of the conjecture that it covers all irreducible representations of sl(m/n) is presented.

Notes: It is noted that the hypothesis of independent random complex elements for the off diagonal blocks (say, M2 and M3) of the transfer matrix describing conductance in a mesoscopic wire allows the eigenvalue distribution of the matrix product M3°M3 (or M2°M2) to be computed exactly. Exact expressions, in terms of double Wronskian and Toeplitz determinants, are derived for the distribution of the smallest and second smallest eigenvalue of this and similar random matrix products. © 1994 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The spherical wave expansion is derived for fields of particles of arbitrary spin and mass, and for arbitrary helicity, massless particles (such as the electromagnetic vector potential corresponding to photons). The starting point is Weinberg's characterization of relativistic, higher spin fields that transform according to general irreducible representations of the homogeneous Lorentz group. The expansion is a relativistic generalization of the familiar tensor and spinor spherical harmonics. It is useful for central force problems that arise, for example, in scattering processes off spherically symmetric solitonic backgrounds such as monopoles or skyrmions.

Notes: In the classification of finite-dimensional modules of Lie superalgebras, Kac distinguished between typical and atypical modules. Kac introduced an induced module, the so-called Kac module V¯(Λ) with highest weight Λ, which was shown to be simple if Λ is a typical highest weight. If Λ is an atypical highest weight, the Kac module is indecomposable and the simple module V(Λ) can be identified with a quotient module of V¯(Λ). In the present paper the problem of determining the composition factors of the Kac modules for the Lie superalgebra sl(m/n) is considered. An algorithm is given to determine all these composition factors, and conversely, an algorithm is given to determine all the Kac modules containing a given simple module as a composition factor. The two algorithms are presented in the form of conjectures, and illustrated by means of detailed examples. Strong evidence in support of the conjectures is provided. The combinatorial way in which the two algorithms are intertwined is both surprising and interesting, and is a convincing argument in favor of the solution to the composition factor problem presented here.
