SYNOPSIS. Most tricarboxylic acid cycle intermediates are oxidized by intact cells of the apochlorotic flagellate Astasia longa (Jahn). Use of these substrates depends on the pH of the medium. The acetate-stimulated respiration is much more sensitive to metabolic inhibitors than is cell motility. The following glyoxylate cycle and/or tricarboxylic acid cycle enzymes have been demonstrated in cell-free extracts: acetic-thiokinase, condensing-enzyme, aconitase, TPN-isocitric dehydrogenase, succinic dehydrogenase, fumarase, and malic dehydrogenase.
