Notes: Increased attention is being directed toward the investigation of tight zones in relation to the storage and disposal of hazardous wastes. Shut-in tests, slug tests, and pressure-slug tests are being used at the proposed Waste Isolation Pilot Plant site, located in southeastern New Mexico, to evaluate the fluid-transmitting properties of several zones above the proposed repository zone. Apparatus used to conduct these tests includes a pressure-transducer system connected to a recording device at the land surface. All three testing methods were used in various combinations to obtain values for the hydraulic properties of the test zones. Multiple testing on the same zone produced similar results. Transmissivities determined by these tests range from 0.00001 to 10 feet squared per day (.000001 to 1 meter squared per day).

Notes: Ethylenethiourea (ETU) residue originating from ethylenebisdithiocarbamate (EBDC) fungicides sprayed in the field was evaluated in canned spinach. The effect of leaf type, mechanical injury, holding temperature and washing solution on levels of ETU were studied. A smooth leaf cultivar had lower ETU residues than savoy and semisavoy. Leaf-injured spinach had higher ETU residues than the intact control. Spinach washed in water reduced the ETU level to less than 5 ppm, while addition of sodium hypochlorite (300 ppm) and a basic detergent (0.1%) further reduced ETU levels to less than 1 ppm. Increasing the washing time from 1 to 3 min did not significantly reduce the residual ETU levels. High holding temperatures (21°C) resulted in canned spinach with low but not significantly different levels of ETU as compared to low temperatures (2°C).

Notes: Isolates of Botrytis cinerea Pers. ex Pers. from slow-developing lesions on strawberries from plants treated with iprodione or vinclozolin fungicides were found to grow on potato dextrose agar (PDA) containing 10 000 p.p.m. iprodione or 1000 p.p.m. vinclozolin. At smaller concentrations, the presence of these fungicides sometimes stimulated growth of these tolerant isolates. When isolates of B. cinerea sensitive to iprodione and vinclozolin were placed on PDA containing between 1 and 5 p.p.m. of one of these fungicides, a few of the cultures showed mycelial growth after extended incubation for seven days. These cultures were also able to grow when subcultured on fresh PDA containing 5 p.p.m. of iprodione or vinclozolin.

Notes: Quadruplicate groups of juvenile red drum (initial mean weight 2.7 g; 20 fish per replicate) were fed experimental diets containing 35% crude protein and graded levels of lysine for eight weeks. Lysine concentration in the basal diet was 1.2% and was supplied by a combination of peanut meal and shrimp-head meal. The basal diet was supplemented with lysine-HCl to provide 1.6, 2.0, and 2.4% lysine. Each of these diets contained an essential amino acid (EAA) premix. Two additional diets were formulated to contain 1.2 and 2.4% lysine without the EAA premix. Weight gain and feed efficiency (FE) data indicated between 1.2 and 1.6% dietary lysine was adequate. However, serum lysine concentrations indicated 1.6-2.0% lysine was required. Fish fed 1.2 or 2.4% lysine, without the EAA premix, exhibited reduced weight gain and feed efficiency. Results indicated that red drum were able to utilize crystalline amino acids when incorporated into diets containing intact protein and, when lysine was adequate, the proteins were deficient in at least one other essential amino acid. It is recommended that a dietary lysine level of 5.7% of the dietary protein be used in formulating red drum diets.

Notes: Soybeans were grown hydroponically and labeled with 75Se-selenite or 75Se-selenate. The seeds were then processed into a full fat soy flour, a defatted soy flour, and an acid-precipitated high-protein concentrate. Analysis for 75Se and total selenium showed that selenium concentration was dependent on the protein levels of the processed fractions indicating that the major portion of 75Se in soybeans is incorporated in proteins.

Notes: Vine-ripened and ethylene-treated tomatoes (cv. ‘Sunny’) were ripened at 15, 18, 21, and 25°C and evaluated for color using a colorimeter. Computer models were developed from the objective data to predict changes in color components (value, hue angle, chroma). Computer-predicted results were then converted to sensory equivalent scores to provide a basis for quality management of tomatoes within a handling and distribution system. The models obtained reasonably estimated changes in vine-ripened tomatoes (cv.‘Flora-Dade’) ripened at 15, 21, and 25°C, but were less successful at predicting changes in ethylene-treated fruit.
