    Notizen: This paper examines hydrogeologie effects of proposed diversion of water from the Mediterranean Sea to the Qattara Depression for generation of electricity in northwestern Egypt. The Lower Miocene Moghra aquifer directly underlies the Qattara Depression, extending to the east and dipping beneath younger formations to the north. The Qattara Depression is a sink for ground-water flow from the Nile Delta aquifer in the east, the Mediterranean Sea in the north, and the Nubian artesian aquifer in the south. In this study, a two-dimensional finite-difference model was used in conjunction with available meteorologie, geologic, and hydrologie data to characterize the present ground-water conditions in this aquifer and to make predictions about the water-table rise which could occur as a result of the proposed Qattara Reservoir. Model predictions indicate that creation of the reservoir could cause a 30-meter rise of the Moghra aquifer's water table in the central part of the Qattara Depression. This water-table rise decreases to the north and east. Transient simulations indicate that steady-state conditions in the modeled area of the Moghra aquifer are not likely to be reached during the expected 100-year lifetime of the reservoir.

    Notizen: Twenty-two cultivars of Phaseolus vulgaris, mentioned in the literature as differential cultivars or sources of resistance, were screened with isolates representing 10 races of Colletotrichum lindemuthianum, to test their suitability as differentials. Single-plant selections from eight cultivars were chosen, with genetic uniformity for resistance and with clear positive or negative reactions following inoculation with all 10 individual races. These differentials are proposed as a standard set for international use, to make the identification of C. lindemuthianum races internationally more comparable. The criteria for a set of differentials, and the influence of cultivar, fungus race and environment on the host-pathogen reaction are discussed.

    Notizen: In March 1990 a pilot ultra-violet disinfection plant was installed at the sewage-treatment works in Bellozanne, Jersey. The pilot plant was set up to test the ability of the process to meet certain defined objectives and, ultimately, to enable the island authorities to satisfy stringent water quality objectives in the receiving waters of St Aubins Bay.The pilot study simulated an open channel installation using medium pressure ultra-violet lamps parallel to the direction of flow. The pilot plant was supplied by Trojan Technologies Inc.The pilot study met its objectives and confirmed the design parameters for a full-scale plant installation to follow.

    Notizen: Utilization on agricultural land is the principal outlet for sewage sludge in the UK, accounting for about 40% of the annual production. During the last 30 years current practice has developed to maximize the benefits to farmers whilst controlling potential problems of public nuisance, water pollution, pathogen transmission and soil contamination. Until now this has been achieved by Government guidelines but, in future, utilization of sewage sludge in agriculture will have a statutory basis following the implemention of an EC Directive in June 1989.A copy of the discussion to this paper, and a copy of the full version of the proceedings of the Symposium, can be obtained from the Institution's Headquarters.

    Notizen: Untreated, pectinesterase treated, low pulp, and pectinase treated orange juices were fortified to 20% RDA of calcium with calcium carbonate or calcium phosphate/lactate (75/25). Neither calcium supplement adversely affected flavor, cloud density, settling pulp, or viscosity in untreated, low pulp, or pectinase treated juices. PME exposed orange juice held 4 hr before pasteurization and calcium supplementation had less cloudy density, increased viscosity and more settling pulp. Calcium carbonate fortified PME exposed and pectinase treated juices had lower flavor scores, while calcium phosphate suspensions caused slightly lower color scores of all juices.

    Notizen: Experiments were undertaken to determine, if homogenization would reduce viscosity of bulk orange concentrate during commercial production and if a structure built-up during storage. Homogenizers, installed within two Taste evaporators at separate citrus processing plants, were cycled “on” for homogenized samples and “off” for controls. In four replicates, homogenization significantly reduced viscosity 19% average. Samples were stored 6 months under tank farm conditions. Structure increased in 5 of 8 samples, but homogenized samples remained significantly lower in viscosity. This confirmed earlier pilot plant results under commercial operations.

    Notizen: : A combined sewer system is a complex system subject to the dynamic stimuli of precipitation, runoff pollution loads, and sanitary wastes. The system response is a random series of pollutant loads to a receiving water. In many localities, these discharges create considerable water quality problems. Mathematical models can and have played a useful role in predicting the behavior of combined sewer systems and evaluating abatement strategies.Based on the authors' experiences over the past several years, this paper explores some of the positive and negative aspects of using deterministic mathematical models to simulate the behavior of combined sewer systems. A case study follows a discussion on modeling objectives, limitations of modeling, model selection, establishing model credibility, and many other considerations necessary in modeling and simulating these systems.
