    Notes: Abstract Numerical solutions of the oxygen-diffusion problem arising in the oxidation of metals at high temperatures are complicated by the change in density as the oxide is formed and the occurrence of moving boundaries separating the different phases. The former complication is resolved by a transformation of the dependent variable and the coordinate, which reduces the problem to a form identical to one without density change. The latter complication is dealt with by demonstrating an analogy with the Stefan problem in heat transfer with phase change in the enthalpy formulation, for which abundant numerical works exist. A finite-difference code is written to solve the resulting equations. It is successfully applied to simulate an oxidation experiment of Zircaloy by steam at 1600°C.

    Notes: A vein-yellowing disease of Ageratum conyzoides in Singapore was shown to be caused by a geminivirus, here named ageratum yellow vein virus (AYVV), which was transmitted by the whitefly Bemisia tabaci but not by inoculation with sap or through seed. AYVV particles (30 × 20 nm) are serologically related to those of other whitefly-transmitted geminiviruses, and reacted with some monoclonal antibodies elicited by particles of African cassava mosaic or Indian cassava mosaic geminiviruses. However, the epitope profile of AYVV differed from the profiles of these viruses, and from those of geminiviruses from vein yellowing-affected A. conyzoides from India and from yellow leaf curl-affected tomato from either Singapore or India. The results provide further evidence of antigenic differences among geminiviruses that cause similar diseases in the same plant species in different geographical regions.

Greatest differences were found for degree of blemishing, lesser differences for flavor by mouth and odor and some trends for taste, color, texture and ease of peeling.

    Notes: One common mode of failure that occurs in rolling bodies such as gears, bearings and rails is due to the fatigue process. Several research workers suggest that rolling contact fatigue cracks are subjected to mixed mode I and II loading cycles. It is believed that the correct modelling of loading cycles can help us to study the mechanics of crack growth because fatigue comprises a major safety consideration in the design process. Experiments have been performed under nonproportional mixed-mode I and II loading cycles with fixed degrees of overlap, so that coplanar cracks were produced. Three empirical crack propagation laws have been established which are related to both mode I and mode II effective stress intensity factor ranges.

    Notes: Two methods were studied for determining crack closure and locking effects under combinations of mixed mode I and II loading, namely the strain gauge and the surface replica methods. They demonstrated that strain gauges are able to detect the mode I crack closure but not mode II crack locking. As an alternative, the surface replica method is suggested as a practical technique for measuring mode II crack locking effects. The effective mode II stress intensity factor range can be estimated by comparison of the actual measured sliding range between a pair of crack faces and the theoretical sliding range.

    Notes: Abstract Geometric feature recognition is a crucial task in the development of concurrent engineering software. This paper presents a new methodology for geometric feature recognition which combines the advantages of face-edge adjacency graphs and expert systems. The methodology uses several new concepts such as enhanced winged edge data structure (EWEDS) and multi-attributed adjacency graphs (MAAG). The object model is presented as a set of facts. The rules for the recognition of each feature are derived from the corresponding feature-MAAG. This simplifies the process of writing the rules while enabling the inclusion of new features into the rule base as they are encountered.

    Notes: Abstract The effects of tin doping on the deep-level photoluminescence (PL) spectra of (LEC) InP were studied. Specifically, the effect of rapid thermal annealing (RTA) on the deep emission bands labelled as band A (1.13 eV), band B (1.06 eV), band C (1.20 eV) and band D (0.97 eV) were investigated. Band A appeared in both undoped and doped samples, but it disappeared after RTA for all the samples. It is suggested that band A is due to the formation of a complex involving VIn with residual impurities. The disappearance of band A after RTA is concomitant with the appearance of bands B, C and D. The existence of band B is attributed to the complex formation of VP with residual impurities. Band C was observed after the annealing process both in undoped and lightly-tin-doped samples and is believed to be due to the formation of VP single point defects. Band D was only observed in heavily doped samples and it is believed to be the effect of InP antisite defects.
