Notes: Abstract Numerical solutions of the oxygen-diffusion problem arising in the oxidation of metals at high temperatures are complicated by the change in density as the oxide is formed and the occurrence of moving boundaries separating the different phases. The former complication is resolved by a transformation of the dependent variable and the coordinate, which reduces the problem to a form identical to one without density change. The latter complication is dealt with by demonstrating an analogy with the Stefan problem in heat transfer with phase change in the enthalpy formulation, for which abundant numerical works exist. A finite-difference code is written to solve the resulting equations. It is successfully applied to simulate an oxidation experiment of Zircaloy by steam at 1600°C.

Notes: Abstract Geometric feature recognition is a crucial task in the development of concurrent engineering software. This paper presents a new methodology for geometric feature recognition which combines the advantages of face-edge adjacency graphs and expert systems. The methodology uses several new concepts such as enhanced winged edge data structure (EWEDS) and multi-attributed adjacency graphs (MAAG). The object model is presented as a set of facts. The rules for the recognition of each feature are derived from the corresponding feature-MAAG. This simplifies the process of writing the rules while enabling the inclusion of new features into the rule base as they are encountered.

Notes: Abstract. Chlorella (a unicellular green alga) and Cladophora (a filamentous alga) were used in algal assays to identify the presence and toxicity of organometallic complexes in four industrial wastewaters. Toxicities of inorganic Pb and organometallic compounds (trimethyl, tetramethyl and tetraethyl leads, cacodylic acid and Cu-picolinate) were examined, using algal cells grown in 10% BBM solution. Inorganic Pb and organometallic compounds altered the fine structure of Chlorella cells in a distinguishable manner. X-ray microanalysis revealed that organometallic compounds accumulated in the neutral lipids of Cladophora cells. By applying the above techniques to the wastewater assays, two of the four wastewaters tested were found to contain organometallic complexes. Wastewater from a chemical company contained only traces of organo-Cu, but one mining effluent contained significant quantities of organo-Cu and organo-Pb, and traces of organo-Cr and organo-Tl (thallium). These studies suggest that X-ray microanalysis of algae may be a useful tool in identifying aquatic systems contaminated with metals and organometallic compounds.

Topics: Chemistry and Pharmacology , Medicine
Notes: Abstract Objective: The pharmacokinetics of an N-hydroxyurea analog, ABT-761 in asthmatic pediatric patients with asthma were investigated. Methods: A total of 24 patients were enrolled into this 8-day single- and multiple-dose study. Patients received daily doses of ABT-761 according to their body weight: patients of 20–38 kg received 50 mg; patients 〉38 kg but ≤55 kg received 100 mg, and patients ≥55 kg received 150 mg. Results: The mean values for the terminal phase t1/2 were 16–17 h after multiple-dose administration. When normalized for body weight, the mean day 8 Clf values for 50-, 100-mg, and 150-mg doses were 0.57 (n = 13), 0.51 (n = 10), and 0.43 (n = 1) ml · min−1 · kg−1, respectively, while the mean Vz/f values ranged from 0.75 to 0.77 l · kg−1. The mean accumulation ratio observed (day 8 to day 1 AUC0–24 ratio) of ABT-761 was approximately 1.7, which is consistent with the t1/2 of this drug. Body weight, age, and body surface area were virtually identical in explaining the variability in dose-normalized Cmax and AUC values (R 2 = 0.61–0.68). The percents of variance explained by these three variables were within a range of 3% for each pharmacokinetic parameter. Conclusions: The pharmacokinetics of ABT-761 in children were similar to those previously reported in adults. Body weight, age, or body surface area can be used to provide dosing adjustment for ABT-761 in pediatric patients.

Notes: Abstract Objective: To study the effect of renal impairment on the pharmacokinetics of sertindole. Methods: A single 4 mg oral dose of sertindole was given to normal subjects ( n = 6) and subjects with various degrees of impaired renal function ( n = 18) classified into mild, moderate, and severe/hemodialysis based on their creatinine clearance). The relationships between the pharmacokinetic parameters and the degree of renal impairment were investigated using regression analysis with creatinine clearance as an explanatory variable along with body weight. Subjects were also genotyped for CYP2D6-A or 2D6-B mutations. Results: The mean CL/f and t1/2 values of sertindole ranged from 14 to 31 l · h−1 and from 73 to 93 h, respectively, and were not significantly related to creatinine clearances. There was no indication of any influence of creatinine clearance on the fraction of sertindole (0.994–0.995) binding to plasma proteins. The total fraction of the sertindole dose removed by dialysis was less than 0.1%. Subjects with B/B genotype ( n = 2) for CYP2D6 were associated with a distinctly lower clearance of sertindole (6.3 vs 25.3 l · h−1) than subjects with wt/wt genotype for CYP2D6. Conclusions: Since the pharmacokinetics of sertindole are unchanged by renal impairment, dosage adjustment does not appear to be necessary for subjects with various degrees of renal insufficiency or subjects with renal failure requiring hemodialysis.

Notes: Abstract The deformation behaviour and the fracture resistance of a range of nylon 6,6/ABS alloys of varying composition both with and without the presence of glass fibres were investigated. The deformation behaviour was characterized by careful measurements of the volumetric strain during tensile tests in order to understand the relative roles of cavitation and shear yielding in these materials. The fracture resistance was investigated in detail in the fracture mechanics sense by characterizing the J-integral fracture initiation toughness. In materials exhibiting stable crack growth, a new parameter, namely, the plateau value of the J-integral fracture resistance curve, was measured directly and represented the resistance of the material to stable crack growth. The results showed that the relationship between the deformation behaviour and fracture resistance was related to the extent of damage that developed in the crack-tip zone. Substantial additional toughening was developed during the crack extension stage both in the presence and absence of glass fibres. Glass fibres were found to promote shear yielding and, as a result, enhance both the fracture initiation as well as the fracture propagation resistance of the nylon 6,6/ABS alloys.
