    Notes: Abstract A cluster is the union of a finite number of cubes from the standard partition ofn-dimensional Euclidean space into unit cubes. If there is lattice tiling by translates of a cluster, then must there be a lattice tiling by translates of the cluster in which the translation vectors have only integer coordinates? In this article we prove that if the interior of the cluster is connected and the dimension is at most three, then the answer is affirmative.

    Notes: Abstract The U.S. Army Laboratory Command, as part of the Department of Defense Robotics Testbed Program, is developing a testbed for cooperative, real-time control of unmanned land vehicles. The program entails the development and integration of many elements which allow the vehicles to perform both autonomous and teleoperated functions. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is supporting this program by developing the vehicle control system using the Real-time Control System (RCS) architecture. RCS is a hierarchical, sensory-based control system, initially developed for the control of industrial robots and automated manufacturing systems. NIST is developing the portions of RCS that control all vehicle mobility functions, coordinate the operations of the other subsystems on the vehicle, and communicate between the vehicle and the remote operator control station. This paper reviews the overall control system architecture, the design and implementation of the mobility and communication functions, and results from recent testing.

    Notes: Abstract The decomposition of axenic Lemna gibba has been studied over a 200 day period under laboratory conditions in the presence and absence of wastewater micro-organisms. The residual mass of plant litter in the decomposition vessels decreased three times more rapidly under biotic than abiotic conditions. The organic matter in the duckweed litter lost about half its weight within 67.9 days in the presence of micro-organisms while more than 200 days were required in axenic vessels. In the former case, AFDW loss followed an exponential pattern of decay. The rate constant was 0.0102 day −1 and the decay was virtually complete after 200 days. The C and K concentration of the remaining duckweed litter decreased; the N, Ca, Fe and B concentration increased in both treatments. The concentration of total N, P, K, Mg, and Mo increased in the receiving water in both treatments but was much higher under biotic than abiotic conditions. Mass balances of nutrients in the vessels and flux of these nutrients between compartments in the vessels (duckweed litter, water and sediment) have been determined. Under axenic conditions the release of elements was very slow. Only notably potassium leaching had occurred. Leaching of potassium, magnesium and organic carbon took place mainly during the first term of incubation and then slowed down. Under biotic decomposition the elemental content of the litter decreased by more than 50% over 43 days for K, 53 days for Mo, 64 days for C, 81 days for Mg, 101 days for S, 104 days for P, 108 days for Na, 111 days for N, 140 days for B. Calcium and iron immobilised in the litter. Most of the released N, S, P, K, Mg and Mo remained in the water, but B and Mn settled into the sediment. The result of the investigation demonstrated that the nutrient flux from decomposing duckweed litter is mainly a microbially mediated process.

    Notes: Abstract Phytoplankton species composition and abundance of a shallow hypertrophic fishpond (Mézeshegyi-tó, East Hungary) was studied for the period 1992–1995. The pond showed a pronounced algal periodicity. High-diversity phytoplankton assemblages occurred in spring and autumn. During the winter period, low diversity values were related either to stable community states, when K-strategist species dominated the plankton, or to a large bloom of r-strategist species. In summer, the stable environment led to low-diversity, high-biomass phytoplankton assemblages, dominated by Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii. At this time, the growth conditions for Cylindrospermopsiswere akin to those prevailing in a continuous fermentor. The overwhelming dominance of this species lasted for more than four months, during which time, the phytoplankton resembled that of one in the tropics. In August, 1993, an unsuccessful chemical treatment for reducing the algal bloom succeeded in killing the pond's entire population of fish. The large fish-stock comprised the planktivorous silver carp. Although the summer of 1994 was one of the warmest summers of this century, the expected Cylindrospermopsis bloom failed to develop probably because of a higher grazing pressure by large zooplankton. In spite of the fact that the temporal and spatial pattern of the phytoplankton is influenced principally by bottom-up effects, changes in cascading trophic interactions may also considerably influence the species composition and biomass.
