Summary The force between a charged conducting sphere and an uncharged dielectric sphere is computed and given in terms of a force coefficient which depends on the relative geometry of the two spheres and the dielectric constants of the spheres and the medium. In addition, approximate solutions for the force between a charged conducting sphere and a charged dielectric sphere are presented. The application of our computed electrostatic forces to the scavenging of atmospheric aerosol particles by water droplets is discussed.
