Description / Table of Contents:
From experiments with glowing filaments, in which clean Ru wires as well as those covered with RuO2 were heated in O2-N2 atmosphere, we have found that the volatilisation of Ru at temperatures ≧ 1200°C takes place predominantly as RuO3.Transpiration measurements confirmed this result. They proved furthermore that at lower temperatures (800°C) the predominant species in the gasphase is RuO4. The quantitative evaluation by means of Cp- and S-values, calculated on the basis of statistical methods for RuO3, g and RuO4, g yielded the heats of formation ΔH(RuO3, g, 298) = -12.7 kcal/mol and ΔH(RuO4, g, 298) = -43.2 kcal/mol.Observations by Alcock and Hooper are in agreement with the obtained pattern, if one considers that in their experiments the solid phase consisted of RuO2 instead of Ru.The thermodynamic data of the hitherto known gaseous oxides of the platinum metals are compiled.
Notes:
