Description / Table of Contents: Abstract Studies of the infra-red spectra of the framework of RECaNaY and RENaY zeolites after vacuum dehydration indicate that Ca2+ ions occupy SI positions and direct RE3+ into the supercavities. The 640 cm−1 band is attributed to Ca2+ ions located in hexagonal prisms. (sym and) asym of TO4 modes are observed to be split.

Description / Table of Contents: Hydroxide Groups on Zeolites. I. Number and Properties of Hydroxide Groups on CaNaY and MgNaY Zeolites of Different Degree of Ion ExchangeThe number of hydroxide groups was studied on CaNaY and MgNaY zeolites by D2 exchange in dependence on the degree of exchange, and their properties were examined by infrared spectroscopy. At these zeolites there exist five types of hydroxide groups which differ by their concentration, their acidic strength, and their thermal stability. The OH-groups are produced mainly by dissociative chemisorption of water at the bivalent cations. The concentration of OH groups shows a characteristic dependence on the degree of ion exchange. There are OH groups which are strongly acid BRÖNSTED centers, capable of protonisation of pyridine, and others which are only capable of weak interactions with pyridine. The number of the acid BRÖNSTED centers increases with the degree of ion exchange analogous to the total number of the hydroxide groups and is highly dependent on the species of the cations exchanged and on the preheating temperature. Compared with CaNaY zeolites, MgNaY zeolites posess a greater number of hydroxide groups which are thermally more stable.

Description / Table of Contents: Influence of the Surface Chemical Properties of CaNaY-Zeolites by Replacement of Ca2+ by RE3+ IonsRE3+ ions are introduced into cation positions within the large cavaties, if about 25 equiv. per cent of Ca2+ ions in CaNaY zeolites are reexchanged by RE3+ ions. In this process the concentration of hydroxide groups doubles nearly. The newly formed hydroxide groups are lattice OH groups and possess an acid strength in the pKa region -8.2 to -5.6.

Description / Table of Contents: In order to elucidate the mode of alkali bonding on Al2O3 surfaces, η-Al2O3 has been modified in nonaqueous, isopropanolic suspension by increasing amounts of sodium isopropylate. Acidimetric, catalytic activity and IR-spectroskopic measurments reveal that alkali, fixed from nonaqueous solution on Al2O3 catalysts, poisons only the acid surface centres; first, strongly acidic BR∅NSTED centres, then Lewis centres and, finally, weakly acidic OH groups. The dehydration of isopropanol seems to be due to two types of active centres: strongly acidic BR∅NSTED centres, and LEWIS centres acting synergistically together with weakly acidic OH groups. For the cracking of cumene, only the OH groups appear to be catalytically active.

Description / Table of Contents: The Influence of Alkali Contamination on the Surface Chemical Properties of Amorphous Al2O3-SiO2 CatalystsIn order to determine the mode of interaction of alkali with acid Al2O3-SiO2 catalysts, such catalysts containing 5 to 35wt.-% Al2O3 were contaminated by increasing amounts of sodium ethylate from non-aqueous solution. The determination of the surface chemical properties was carried out by the following methods: Titration with potassium methylate, high temperature chemisorption of ammonia by means of two methods, D2O exchange, desorption Spectrometry, infrared spectroscopy and ESR Spectroscopy by adsorption of molecules capable of forming radicals. It was established that at the surface there are strongly acid BRÖNSTED centres, less strongly acid LEWIS and BRÖNSTED centres, and very weakly acid OH groups. When added from non-aqueous solution with increasing concentration, alkali preferentially contaminates strongly acid BRÖNSTED centres, thereafter acid LEWIS and BRÖNSTED centres simultaneously, but only at a high alkali concentration it does contaminate the very weakly acid surface hydroxide groups.

Description / Table of Contents: Effect of Alkali Contamination on the Catalytic Properties of Al2O3—Si2Catalytic properties of amorphous Al2O3—SiO2 catalysts containing different amounts of Al2O3 in dehydration of isopropanol and cracking of cumene were examined after a defined contamination of the acid centers by sodium ethylate from alcoholic solution. In both reactions, the catalytic activity is decreased by treatment with sodium ethylate, the cracking of cumene being suppressed at a lower alkali concentration than the dehydration of isopropanol. In dehydration of isopropanol, the dependence of the catalytic activity on the alkali content is influenced strongly by the Al2O3 content of the catalysts. In the cracking of cumene, strongly acid Brönsted centers are active, whereas the dehydration of isopropanol proceeds by joint action of acid Lewis or Brönsted centers, respectively, with basic centers at the surface of the catalyst (hydroxide groups or oxygen anions).
