    Description / Table of Contents: The volume provides a modern synthesis of foreland basin stratigraphy and structural geology. It covers the foothills and foreland basins of the northwestern Alps, the Pyrenees and the Betic thrust belt. The multidisciplinary approach includes both sedimentological and structural studies, plus numerical modelling as a tool to quantify and integrate the geological data. This book reults from the Integrated Basin Studies Project, which was funded by the European Commission. More than 200 researchers from 38 institutions in 15 countries have collaborated in the IBS project. Several papers from outside the project have also been included to provide the reader with a more comprehensive overview of Western Europe's Cenozoic foreland basins. This volume concentrates on scientific research, but many oil companies are actively exploring the foothills of thrust belts throughout the world, and this book will be an invaluable reference work for exploration geologists as well as for academics.

    Notes: The Castissent Formation represents a phase of strong fluvial progradation within the fluvio-deltaic Montanyana Group, probably enhanced by the late Ypresian sea-level fall. The structural setting is characterized by the emplacement of the South Pyrenean nappes. The major architectural feature of the Formation is the superposition of three multilateral and multistorey sheet sandstone complexes (A, B and C), interbedded in finer floodplain deposits and dark-grey mudstones of brackish transitional origin. The structure of the sheet sandstone complexes is exemplified by the detailed analysis of the lower sheet sandstone complex (A), 25 m thick, 6 km wide and exposed over 25 km of its length. Three types of channel-fill sandstones serve as components: (1) lenticular-bedded bodies, interpreted as braided stream deposits, (2) lateral accretion-bedded bodies, intepreted as meandering stream deposits, and (3) ribbons, originating from laterally stable and short-lived offshoot or crevasse channels. By coalescence and/or stacking of these channel-fill types, higher-order architectural units (A1, A2, A3) have been formed that together build the sheet sandstone complex. On the basis of downstream variation in proportion and geometrical relation between the channel-fill components, three depositional zones have been differentiated within the fluvial system. Each zone is characterized by specific architectural processes: (1) alternation of minor aggradational-degradational cycles in the proximal valley, (2) generation of new alluvial belts in the intermediate nodal avulsion zone, and (3) successive random avulsion processes with development of semipermanent crevasse channels or minor distributaries in the distal distributive zone. The sedimentation of the Castissent Formation was structurally controlled by an interplay of vertical basement movement due to thrust stacking in the hinterland and surficial thrust displacement to the foreland resulting in alternating southward and northward shift of the fluvial system.

    Description: The Gres d'Annot onlap on the outer basin margin has been extensively studied, but a number of important issues and critical outcrops remain controversial. A new geological map of the Annot syncline is here presented, supplemented with structural and sedimentological field observations. The mapped onlap traces in Annot reveal a curved, east-concave surface, with distinct westward shift of the successive onlap lines. The inferred onlap direction at Chalufy is to the SW, the only orientation compatible with the movement of the normal fault near Cabane des Abeurons. The similarity of the onlap relations between the areas of Annot and Chalufy, together with the structural features of the Annot syncline, support the concept of a common outer basin margin, rather than of a northern confinement of the Annot turbidites. The margin-onlap setting involved a specific style of syndepositional deformation. As a large, high-density turbidity current arrived on the basin-flank slope, it rapidly decelerated, thickened and dropped its coarse load, while being simultaneously deflected away from the slope. The associated normal stress and overpressure caused sub-horizontal injection and de-lamination of the soft substrate, with the tangential strain curling up the detached substrate slice into an overturned synclinal structure. The process provides an efficient way to incorporate fragments of mudstone and thin-bedded sandstone within the still moving highly-concentrated flow, eventually constituting the chaotic intervals within tri-partite' beds as the examples observed at the Braux section.

    Description: This study constrains the sediment provenance for the Late Cretaceous–Eocene strata of the Ager Basin, Spain, and reconstructs the interplay between foreland basin subsidence and sediment routing within the south-central Pyrenean foreland basin during the early phases of crustal shortening using detrital zircon (DZ) U-Pb-He double dating. Here we present and interpret 837 new DZ U-Pb ages, 113 of which are new DZ (U-Th)/He double-dated zircons. U-Pb-He double dating results allow for a clear differentiation between different foreland and hinterland sources of Variscan zircons (280–350 Ma) by leveraging the contrasting thermal histories of the Ebro Massif and Pyrenean orogen, recorded by the zircon (U-Th)/He (ZHe) ages, despite their indistinguishable U-Pb age signatures. Cretaceous–Paleocene sedimentary rocks, dominated by Variscan DZ U-Pb age components with Permian–Triassic (200–300 Ma) ZHe cooling ages, were sourced from the Ebro Massif south of the Ager Basin. A provenance shift occurred at the base of the Early Eocene Baronia Formation (ca. 53 Ma) to an eastern Pyrenean source (north-east of the Ager Basin) as evidenced by an abrupt change in paleocurrents, a change in DZ U-Pb signatures to age distributions dominated by Cambro-Silurian (420–520 Ma), Cadomian (520–700 Ma), and Proterozoic–Archean (〉700 Ma) age components, and the prominent emergence of Cretaceous–Paleogene (〈90 Ma) ZHe cooling ages. The Eocene Corçà Formation (ca. 50 Ma), characterized by the arrival of fully reset ZHe ages with very short lag times, signals the accumulation of sediment derived from the rapidly exhuming Pyrenean thrust sheets. While ZHe ages from the Corçà Formation are fully reset, zircon fission track (ZFT) ages preserve older inherited cooling ages, bracketing the exhumation level within the thrust sheets to ca. 6–8 km in the Early Eocene. These DZ ZHe ages yield exhumation rate estimates of ca. 0.03 km/Myr during the Late Cretaceous–Paleocene for the Ebro Massif and ca. 0.2–0.4 km/Myr during the Eocene for the eastern Pyrenees. © 2019 The Authors.
