    Notes: Abstract  The effect of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) on micropropagated banana plantlets was evaluated during the acclimatization period. Plants were inoculated with Acaulospora scrobiculata, Glomus clarum or Glomus etunicatum. After cultivation in a greenhouse for 3 months, height, leaf area, fresh weight and dry matter of root and shoots, level of AMF colonization, nutrient level, photosynthesis and transpiration rate, water potential and stomatal conductance were measured. The number of AMF spores produced in each treatment was also determined. Plantlets inoculated with AMF had greater height, leaf area and fresh weight of shoots and roots, as well as higher rates of photosynthesis and transpiration than controls. Plants inoculated with Glomus were superior in most of the evaluated parameters.

    Notes: The combined hyperfine interaction of mercury in a hexagonal close-packed cobalt single crystal was measured using the e−−γ perturbed angular correlation technique with the 197Hg and 199Hg probes, without applied magnetic field. The magnetic and quadrupole coupling constants of the 5/2− levels in both 197Hg and 199Hg were measured with extremely high precision, ωL( 197Hg)=951(9) Mrad/s, ωL (199Hg)=1039(10) Mrad/s, vQ (197Hg)=3.7(5) MHz and vQ (199Hg)=32(2) MHz. Using the well-known g factors and quadrupole moments of the respective levels, the magnetic hyperfine field, ||Hhf(HgCo)||=581(12) kG, and the electric field gradient, ||Vzz(HgCo)|| =2.0(3)×1017 V/cm2, were derived. The importance of using these hyperfine probes for studying the microscopic structure of cobalt-based multilayers is introduced and discussed.

    Notes: The structure of thin cobalt films sputtered on a rhenium buffer was analyzed from room temperature to 963 K, using the perturbed angular correlation technique with the 111In/111Cd probe. The hyperfine field corresponding to the fcc phase, which is the stable one above 704 K, is never observed, and the measured hyperfine field follows closely a theoretical prediction for the hcp phase. This is a consequence of the good match between the cobalt and the Re hcp lattices that leads to the stabilization of the hcp phase up to 963 K.

    Notes: Stocks of carbon in Amazonian forest biomass and soils have received considerable research attention because of their potential as sources and sinks of atmospheric CO2. Fluxes of CO2 from soil to the atmosphere, on the other hand, have not been addressed comprehensively in regard to temporal and spatial variations and to land cover change, and have been measured directly only in a few locations in Amazonia. Considerable variation exists across the Amazon Basin in soil properties, climate, and management practices in forests and cattle pastures that might affect soil CO2 fluxes. Here we report soil CO2 fluxes from an area of rapid deforestation in the southwestern Amazonian state of Acre. Specifically we addressed (1) the seasonal variation of soil CO2 fluxes, soil moisture, and soil temperature; (2) the effects of land cover (pastures, mature, and secondary forests) on these fluxes; (3) annual estimates of soil respiration; and (4) the relative contributions of grass-derived and forest-derived C as indicated by δ13CO2. Fluxes were greatest during the wet season and declined during the dry season in all land covers. Soil respiration was significantly correlated with soil water-filled pore space but not correlated with temperature. Annual fluxes were higher in pastures compared with mature and secondary forests, and some of the pastures also had higher soil C stocks. The δ13C of CO2 respired in pasture soils showed that high respiration rates in pastures were derived almost entirely from grass root respiration and decomposition of grass residues. These results indicate that the pastures are very productive and that the larger flux of C cycling through pasture soils compared with forest soils is probably due to greater allocation of C belowground. Secondary forests had soil respiration rates similar to mature forests, and there was no correlation between soil respiration and either forest age or forest biomass. Hence, belowground allocation of C does not appear to be directly related to the stature of vegetation in this region. Variation in seasonal and annual rates of soil respiration of these forests and pastures is more indicative of flux of C through the soil rather than major net changes in ecosystem C stocks.

    Notes: Abstract It was the purpose of this study to test whether inhibition of estrus in the rabbit by short photoperiod could be simulated by subcutaneous implants of the pineal hormone melatonin. By measuring two non-invasive and readily quantifiable correlates of estrus, emission of the so-called nipple-search pheromone and scent-marking behavior (chinning), it was found that: 1. In intact does kept in stimulatory long photoperiod, melatonin suppressed chinning but had no effect on emission of nipple-search pheromone. 2. In intact, melatonin-treated does which were returned from inhibitory short day to stimulatory long day, chinning remained suppressed, whereas pheromone emission increased as for the vehicle-treated, control does. 3. In ovariectomized does, estradiol administration stimulated both pheromone emission and chinning whereas melatonin failed to suppress these effects. Thus, although the administration of melatonin had an inhibitory effect on chinning it failed to suppress emission of the nipple-search pheromone and therefore failed to fully simulate the effect of short photoperiod on these two correlates of estrus. Several explanations for this discrepancy are considered, including the possibility that melatonin is not the sole mediary of the photoperiodic response, and that at least in female rabbits, other pineal products may also play a significant role.

    Notes: Abstract A comparative study of 20 blood genetic systems was performed on three populations of genusSaguinus: S. fuscicollis weddelli, S. midas niger, andS. midas midas. Some markers are useful for the characterization of the two species.ADA 5, ADA6, CA23, CA24, andES2 2 occur only inS. fuscicollis whileADA 4is fixed inS. midas. S. midas midas showed heterozygosity value comparable to those previously obtained for the genusAlouatta. Estimates of genetic distance betweenS. fuscicollis andS. midas species of about 14% are in accordance with those referred to in the literature for interspecific differences. Genetic distances between subspecies ofSaguinus midas were nearly 3%, which is within the range for subspecies.
