Notes: Abstract In this paper, two important basic problems relating to the complex damping theory are discussed. The two problems are: (1) the essence of complex damping, and (2) the dynamic solution of structures with complex damping in time domain. To investigate the above problems, the frequency-dependent viscous damping theory is established and the correct and applicable solution of forced vibration for a complex damping oscillator is given beforehand.

Notes: The Debye–Waller factors (DWFs) of Co and Ti atoms in Co3Ti have been obtained by quantitative convergent-beam electron diffraction (QCBED). They are BCo = 0.20–0.24 and BTi = 0.41–0.43 Å2 in Co3Ti at room temperature. A modified simulated-annealing algorithm and its parallel algorithm were employed to obtain reliable results efficiently.

Notes: The compositional fluctuation and correlation between the ordered domain and the polar cluster in lead magnesium niobate Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3 have been studied by analytical electron microscopy and the image processing technique. It indicates that there is a strong compositional fluctuation of Mg/Nb ratio in both the ordered and the disordered regions, and that the degree of fluctuation of the Mg/Nb ratio is stronger in the boundary area than in either the ordered or disordered regions. Antiphase domain boundaries and dislocations were found, with the boundary facets of ordered domains being primarily {111} with a lesser {001} orientation. The fringe image of Nb and (Nb+Mg) is distorted randomly, which is thought to be caused by compositional fluctuation of the Mg/Nb ratio and local layer displacement. The boundary and dislocation area were found to be a region of severe distortion. The random interdomain-boundary area, with strong compositional fluctuation and lattice strain, may play an important role in forming a center for polar clusters. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The satellite distribution around the main reflections of the incommensurate modulation in Bi2Sr2CaCu2Oy has been studied by means of x-ray diffraction on a number of single crystals. The presence of the forbidden reflections which are incompatible with a B-centered Bravais lattice is found to be correlated with the spread of the mosaic blocks in the crystal sheet and therefore spurious to the distribution of the satellite reflections in the reciprocal space. Diffraction data collected for a highly oriented crystal annealed in flowing nitrogen at 650 °C for 60 h have shown that the structural modulation is coherent with the Bi2Sr2CaCu2Oy phase and robust to the anneal. Relationships between superconductivity, structural modulation, and oxygen content in the compound are discussed.

Notes: Vertically stacked InxGa1−xAs/GaAs quantum dots have been fabricated by molecular beam epitaxy. Cross-sectional high resolution electron microscopy analyses demonstrate that the quantum dot size increases, and the interplanar spacings of {111} for quantum dots as well as the mismatch between the quantum dots and the spacer layers, is increased with the layer number. Chemical analysis shows that, as fabrication proceeds, indium content is increased and gallium content is decreased, leading to the changes of mismatch and interplanar spacing for the quantum dots. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The magnetic permeability and giant magnetoimpedance effect of Fe73.5Cu1Mo3Si13.5B9 alloy ribbons in different annealed states have been measured as functions of the external magnetic field and the ac driving current frequency. It is found that the giant magnetoimpedance effect in the magnetic-field annealed state is larger than that in the nonfield annealed state. In the field annealed state, the easy magnetization direction is along the driving current as well as the external magnetic field. This leads to significant change of the permeability at high frequencies, and consequently the magnetoimpedance is enhanced in this state. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A MoSi2/SiCP composite was synthesized by in situ reactive sintering of a mixture of molybdenum, silicon, and carbon powders. Its microstructural features were studied by X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), conventional transmission electron microscopy (CTEM), and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HREM). It was determined that the composite was composed of α-MoSi2 and β-SiC. There were no specific orientation relationships between the MoSi2 matrix and SiCP, because the MoSi2 and SiC were formed at 1450°C by the reaction of solid Mo and C and liquid Si. The abrupt change occurring in the microstructure of the composite is explained by the presence of an interface between MoSi2 and SiCP, where no observable SiO2 amorphous layer or particles were found. Microtwins and stacking faults were frequently observed in {111} planes of SiCP.

Notes: The ordered domain structures in Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3(PMN) and Pb1–xLax(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3 are identified using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and nanobeam diffractometry (NBD). The chemical compositions in the ordered domains and in the disordered matrices are also acquired using energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The best matching computer-simulated HRTEM image has a Mg2+/Nb2+ ratio of return ½. There is no obvious chemical composition difference between the ordered domains and the disordered matrices. The number of the normalized total positive valence electrons remains almost constant in the ordered domains and in the disordered matrices for all the samples. The reason for the growth of the ordered domains in La-doped PMN also is discussed.

Notes: Using convergent-beam electron diffraction (CBED), the fine structure factors of Co3Ti alloys have been measured and the effects of boron microalloying on the fine structure factors have been studied. The extinction distances of Co3Ti have been obtained by both Kelly's method (making use of the positions of the maximum and minimum intensities in the CBED pattern) and the CBED simulation method.

Notes: The microdiffraction from a single translation domain boundary (TDB) in β-Ni3Nb has been recorded by using a Hitachi HF-2000 field emission gun transmission electron microscope, while high-resolution transmission electron microscopy images were used to assist the analysis. The diffraction splitting effect of a TDB is well explained by the kinematics and dynamic calculations, and complex diffraction characteristics have been studied by using dynamics simulation.
