    Description: Definition of cellular responses to cytokines often involves cross-communication through their respective receptors. Here, signaling by interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) is shown to depend on the IFN-alpha/beta receptor components. Although these IFNs transmit signals through distinct receptor complexes, the IFN-alpha/beta receptor component, IFNAR1, facilitates efficient assembly of IFN-gamma-activated transcription factors. This cross talk is contingent on a constitutive subthreshold IFN-alpha/beta signaling and the association between the two nonligand-binding receptor components, IFNAR1 and IFNGR2, in the caveolar membrane domains.     Description: Equal amounts of matter and antimatter are predicted to have been produced in the Big Bang, but our observable Universe is clearly matter-dominated. One of the prerequisites for understanding this elimination of antimatter is the nonconservation of charge-parity (CP) symmetry. So far, two types of CP violation have been observed in the neutral K meson (K(0)) and B meson (B(0)) systems: CP violation involving the mixing between K(0) and its antiparticle (and likewise for B(0) and ), and direct CP violation in the decay of each meson. The observed effects for both types of CP violation are substantially larger for the B(0) meson system. However, they are still consistent with the standard model of particle physics, which has a unique source of CP violation that is known to be too small to account for the matter-dominated Universe. Here we report that the direct CP violation in charged B(+/-)--〉K(+/-)pi(0) decay is different from that in the neutral B(0) counterpart. The direct CP-violating decay rate asymmetry, (that is, the difference between the number of observed B(-)--〉K(-)pi(0) event versus B(+)--〉K(+) pi(0) events, normalized to the sum of these events) is measured to be about +7%, with an uncertainty that is reduced by a factor of 1.7 from a previous measurement. However, the asymmetry for versus B(0)--〉K(+)pi(-) is at the -10% level.     Description: Severe childhood autosomal recessive muscular dystrophy (SCARMD) is a progressive muscle-wasting disorder common in North Africa that segregates with microsatellite markers at chromosome 13q12. Here, it is shown that a mutation in the gene encoding the 35-kilodalton dystrophin-associated glycoprotein, gamma-sarcoglycan, is likely to be the primary genetic defect in this disorder. The human gamma-sarcoglycan gene was mapped to chromosome 13q12, and deletions that alter its reading frame were identified in three families and one of four sporadic cases of SCARMD.     Description: The crystal structure at 2.7 A resolution of the normal human c-H-ras oncogene protein lacking a flexible carboxyl-terminal 18 residue reveals that the protein consists of a six-stranded beta sheet, four alpha helices, and nine connecting loops. Four loops are involved in interactions with bound guanosine diphosphate: one with the phosphates, another with the ribose, and two with the guanine base. Most of the transforming proteins (in vivo and in vitro) have single amino acid substitutions at one of a few key positions in three of these four loops plus one additional loop. The biological functions of the remaining five loops and other exposed regions are at present unknown. However, one loop corresponds to the binding site for a neutralizing monoclonal antibody and another to a putative "effector region"; mutations in the latter region do not alter guanine nucleotide binding or guanosine triphosphatase activity but they do reduce the transforming activity of activated proteins.     Description: To highlight the impact of satellite measurements, a comparison between the Japanese 55-year Reanalysis (JRA-55) and its equivalent one without the assimilation of satellite observations (JRA-55C; C stands for ‘conventional’ observations) was conducted. As an illustrative example of the detectability problem of extreme events, we report on the reproducibility of a stratospheric sudden warming (SSW) event that occurred in late September 2002; this event represents the first observed unique vortex splitting event in the Antarctic stratosphere. Through the data assimilation system of JRA-55, the initial tendency of this warming event and the following recovery process were well captured even when no satellite observations were used. However, the warming in the JRA-55C does not satisfy the criteria for a major SSW event besides the lack of splitting behaviour in the polar vortex. A prominent difference between JRA-55 and JRA-55C during the SSW event, which was characterized by the sudden appearance of a nearly barotropic structure from the upper stratosphere to the troposphere, was found over the Western Hemisphere reflecting the geographic distribution of observational sites. Moreover, several differences in the precursory state of the polar vortex and the observational anchoring effect are consistent with the proposal that this SSW was caused by the catastrophic breakdown of a highly deformed polar vortex as suggested by some recent works.

    Description: Combining different physical systems in hybrid quantum circuits opens up novel possibilities for quantum technologies. In quantum magnonics, quanta of collective excitation modes in a ferromagnet, called magnons, interact coherently with qubits to access quantum phenomena of magnonics. We use this architecture to probe the quanta of collective spin excitations in a millimeter-sized ferromagnetic crystal. More specifically, we resolve magnon number states through spectroscopic measurements of a superconducting qubit with the hybrid system in the strong dispersive regime. This enables us to detect a change in the magnetic moment of the ferromagnet equivalent to a single spin flipped among more than 10 19 spins. Our demonstration highlights the strength of hybrid quantum systems to provide powerful tools for quantum sensing and quantum information processing.

    Description: ABSTRACT To evaluate water use and the supporting water source of a tropical rainforest, a four-year assessment of evapotranspiration (ET) was conducted in Pasoh Forest Reserve (FR), a lowland dipterocarp forest in Peninsular Malaysia. The eddy covariance method and isotope signals of rain, plant, soil and stream waters were used to determine forest water sources under different moisture conditions. Four sampling events were conducted to collect soil and plant twig samples in wet, moderate, dry and very dry conditions for the identification of isotopic signals. Annual ET from 2012 to 2015 was quite stable with an average of 1182 ± 26 mm, and a substantial daily ET was observed even during drought periods, although some decline was observed, corresponding with volumetric soil water content. During the wet period, water for ET was supplied from the surface soil layer between 0 to 0.5 m, while in the dry period, approximately 50 to 90% was supplied from the deeper soil layer below 0.5 m depth, originating from water precipitated several months previously at this forest. Isotope signatures demonstrated that the water sources of the plants, soil, and stream were all different. Water in plants was often different from soil water, probably because plant water came from a different source than water that was strongly bound to the soil particles. Plants showed no preference for soil depth with their size, while the existence of storage water in the xylem was suggested. The evapotranspiration at this forest is balanced and maintained using most of the available water sources except for a proportion of rapid response runoff.

    Notes: Abstract The cRNA for Torpedo californica Na+/K+-ATPase β-subunit (cRNAβ) was injected into Xenopus oocytes alone or with the cRNA for the Na+/K+-ATPase α-subunit (cRNAα). When cRNAβ was injected alone, the amount of the β-subunit that accumulated in oocytes increased with increasing amounts of injected cRNAβ. When cRNAβ and cRNAα were injected simultaneously, less β-subunit accumulated than when cRNAβ was injected alone, whereas the Na+/K+-ATPase activity increased markedly. The decrease in the accumulation of the β-subunit was dose-dependent upon the cRNAα. The mutant β-subunit unable to assemble with the α-subunit accumulated in oocytes independently of cRNAα, suggesting that post-translational control mechanisms may serve to reduce the accumulation of the β-subunit.
