Notes: 2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-5-phenyl-1, 3, 4-oxadiazole (HOXD), characteristic of excited state intramolecular proton-transfer (ESIPT), was synthesized and found to emit strong blue phosphorescence in the solid state at room temperature and at low temperature (77 K). The photoluminescent spectrum measurement in solution showed that there are two kinds of emission: fluorescence originated from the singlet state and phosphorescence derived from the triplet state in HOXD formed by ESIPT. For the photoluminescent spectrum in the solid state, only phosphorescence emission with the lifetime of 66 μs was observed. Multiple-layer light-emitting diodes with the configuration of ITO/NPB/HOXD/BCP/Alq3/Mg:Ag were fabricated using HOXD as emitter and the maximum brightness of 656 cd/m2 and the luminous efficiency of 0.14 lm/W was obtained. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Using a molal conductance method, ion solvation and ion association in polytriethylene glycol dimethacrylate (PTREGD)-LiClO4 gel electrolytes with amorphous ethylene oxide-co-propylene oxide (EO-co-PO, M̄n = 1750) as the plasticizer were investigated. It was found that the fraction of solute existing as single ions (αi) and ion pairs (αp) decreases, while that of triple ions (αt) increases linearly with increasing salt concentration. The dependence of these fractions on molecular weight of plasticizer was also examined. It was shown that αi and αt increase and αp decreases with increasing molecular weight. The result of temperature dependence of these fractions was very interesting: when the temperature is lower than 55°C, αi increases while αp and αt decrease with increasing temperature; however, when the temperature is higher than 55°C, the reverse is true.

Notes: Mixed crystals of polyethylene (PEH) and various-molecular-weight perdeuterated polyethylenes (PEDs) have been prepared at 80°C and their infrared spectra compared with those of samples grown at 55°C. Concentrations of 80 PEH/1 PED were required in the former case to eliminate segregation effects whereas 40 PEH/1 PED sufficed in the latter. Resolution of the observed CD2 bend contour was most reasonably achieved with a crystalline singlet and two crystalline doublets, in addition to a contribution (ca. 15%) from the noncrystalline component. The singlet, comprising about 20% of the crystalline area, contains contributions from both isolated stems and (200) adjacent reentry folding. Random reentry folding is therefore not a predominant mode of chain organization in polyethylene single crystals. The inner of the two doublets arises from adjacent reentry folding along single (110) planes, and is present for all PED molecular weights. For low-molecular-weight fractions this splitting is consistent with the number of stems of one PED molecule allowed in the crystal. The outer doublet arises from multiple (110) plane adjacency, and is present for intermediate and high molecular weights. An analysis of both doublets suggests that at high molecular weights a single molecule can crystallize with noncontiguous regions of adjacent stem domains.

Notes: Polymerization of styrene with the neodymium phosphonate Nd(P507)/H2O/Al(i-Bu)3 catalytic system has been examined. The polymer obtained was separated into a soluble and an insoluble fraction by 2-butanone extraction. 13C-NMR spectra indicate that the insoluble fraction is isotactic polystyrene and the soluble one is syndiotactic-rich atactic polystyrene. The polymerization features are described and discussed. The optimum conditions for the polymerization are as follows: [Nd] = (3.5-5.0) × 10-2 mol/L; [styrene] = 5 mol/L; [Al]/[Nd] = 6-8 mol/mol; [H2O]/[Al] = 0.05-0.08 mol/mol; polymerization temperature around 70°C. The percent yield of isotactic polystyrene (IY) is markedly affected by catalyst aging temperature. With increase of the aging temperature from 40 to 70°C, IY increases from 9% to 48%. Using AlEt3 and Al(i-Bu)2H instead of Al(i-Bu)3 decreases the yield of isotactic polystyrene. Different neodymium compounds give the following activity order: Nd(P507)3 〉 Nd(P204)3 〉 Nd(OPri)3 〉 NdCl3 + C2H5OH 〉 Nd(naph)3. With Nd(naph)3 as catalyst, only atactic polystyrene is obtained. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci A: Polym Chem 36: 1773-1778, 1998

Notes: The effect of a fine powder of Y2O3, Nd2O2, and Ho2O3, on the crystal structure of isotactic polypropylene (iPP) was studied with WAXD and DSC techniques. The results showed that the addition of the three rare earth oxides (REOs) can increase the crystallite size of the α-form crystal and the degree of crystallinity of iPP at an annealing temperature of 120°C and that both Y2O3 and Nd2O3 are the β-nucleator of iPP. REOs enhance the overall growth rate of the spherulites of iPP. All the iPP samples filled with REOs which were crystallized isothermally at 132°C from the melt exhibited their melting peaks of the β-form on the DSC heating traces, indicating that the REOs are the nucleating agents for both the α- and β-forms of iPP under isothermal conditions. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Structure changes and charge transfer in the doping process of poly(2,5-dimethylaniline) (PDMA) were studied by NMR technique. It was shown that not only the polymer chain but also the hydrogen atoms and methyl groups on the aromatic rings were involved in the charge transfer process. A “four ring BQ derivatives” model was proposed to explain the NMR results.

Notes: Stereospecific polymerization of styrene was catalyzed by homogeneous neodymium phosphonate [Nd(P507)3]-H2O-Al(i-Bu)3 catalytic system. The polymer was separated into isotactic polystyrene and atactic polystyrene by extracting the latter with boiling 2-butanone. The conversion of styrene and the yield of isotactic polystyrene (IY) were influenced by the [H2O]/[Al(i-Bu)3] mole ratio and the solvent polarity. The reaction is first order with respect to monomer at 70°C.
