    Description: The monograph presents results of comprehensive geological and geophysical studies carried out in 1973 and 1976 during Cruises 54 and 58 of R/V "Vityaz" in the Eastern Indian Ocean. On the base of obtained data a description of topography, magnetic and gravity fields, structure of the sedimentary series and deep crustal structure of the East Indian Ridge, Central, West Australian and Cocos Basins, the Sunda Trench has been done. Materials on petrography, petrochemistry and geochemistry of igneous rocks in the region have been summarized. New geological and geophysical information has been compared with with DSDP materials. Tectonics and geological history of the Eastern Indian Ocean are under consideration.

    Description: Results of experimental studies of ion exchange properties of manganese and iron minerals in micronodules from diverse bioproductive zones of the World Ocean were considered. It was found that sorption behavior of these minerals was similar to that of ore minerals from ferromanganese nodules and low-temperature hydrothermal crusts. The exchange complex of minerals in the micronodules includes the major (Na**+, K**+, Ca**2+, Mg**2+, and Mn**2+) and subordinate (Ni**2+, Cu**2+, Co**2+, Pb**2+, and others) cations. Reactivity of theses cations increases from Pb**2+ and Co**2+ to Na**+ and Ca**2+. Exchange capacity of micronodule minerals increases from alkali to heavy metal cations. Capacity of iron and manganese minerals in oceanic micronodules increases in the following series: goethite 〈 goethite + birnessite 〈 todorokite + asbolane-buserite + birnessite 〈 asbolane-buserite + birnessite 〈 birnessite + asbolane-buserite 〈 birnessite + vernadite ~= Fe-vernadite + Mn-feroxyhyte. Obtained data supplement available information on ion exchange properties of oceanic ferromanganese sediments and refine the role of sorption processes in redistribution of metal cations at the bottom water - sediment interface during micronodule formation and growth.

    Description: According to average grain size parameters (Kd, Kd1) recent sediments from the northern Caspian Sea and the Barents Sea shelf are similar, while sediments from the Norwegian Sea are closer to their counterparts of the World Ocean. Seaward content of subcolloidal (〈0.001 mm) size fraction increases against the background of decreasing proportions of coarse- and medium-grained pelite (〈0.01 mm) material.

    Description: In fault zones of the East Indian Ridge and adjacent areas of ocean floor almost monomineral sepiolite- and palygorskite clays have been found. They have been studied by a complex of optical and physical methods. Formation of authigenic sepiolites and palygorskite had occurred under influence of Mg- and Si-rich hydrothermal solutions by metasomatic replacement of montmorillonite clays, or by precipitation from saturated solutions in cracks of various rocks.
