Notes: Abstract Clusters of mitochondria have been observed close to the inner end of the pores in Nonionella stella, Globobulimina pacifica, Buliminella tenuata, Bolivina argentea, Loxostomum pseudobeyrichi, Cassidulinoides cornuta and Bolivina cf. subexcavata, pointing to a pore function of oxygen-uptake. The relationship between mitochondria and pores is most distinct in Buliminella tenuata, Bolivina argentea and L. pseudobeyrichi collected from a deep-water, low-oxygen environment. Amphistegina lobifera Larsen, 1976 readily took up 14CO2 through its pores, indicating a pore function related to the photosynthetic activities of its symbionts. 14C-labelled glucose did not pass through the pores in traceable amounts during a 2 h exposure time.

Notes: Abstract A method for measurement of the positron implantation profile in the geometry employed in most positron annihilation experiments is described. The method is applied to the case of Ni as absorber and22Na as positron emitter. The experimental accuracy is discussed and a proposal for its improvement is outlined. Since absorption studies of positrons is usually performed in geometries quite different from the present, we give a short discussion on the impact of these differences on the transmission curves obtained.

Notes: Abstract Positron lifetime and Doppler broadening measurements have been carried out on GeS1.375 and GeS1.5 glasses. A pronounced decrease of the mean lifetime was observed at crystallization of GeS1.375 glass into the GeS structure. Also the Doppler-broadened curves are strongly sensitive to this solid-solid phase transition. Unlike the situation for many metals, the positron annihilation parameters were found non-sensitive to fast neutron irradiation doses as high as 1019 n/cm2. No difference between positron annihilation parameters measured on GeS1.375 and GeS1.5 glasses was found. The state of the positron in the GeS glasses is discussed on the basis of these results. The idea is put forward, that the GeS-GeS2 system provides possibilities of sample parameter variations that might prove useful in the understanding of the positron state in non-metallic solids.

Notes: Summary The pharmacokinetics of furosemide 40 mg i.v. were compared in 7 anephric patients and in 7 normal subjects. The average serum clearance was 66 ml/min in the patients and 219 ml/min in the normal subjects, and the corresponding weight corrected clearances were 1.33 ml/min · kg and 2.96 ml/min · kg. Binding to serum proteins was significantly decreased in the anephric subjects, in whom a significant negative correlation was found between the percentage binding and the volume of distribution VDss. In the patients, but not in the normal subjects, there was a significant positive correlation between $$V_{D_{ss} } $$ and serum clearance. Both in normal and anephric individuals 4-chlor-5-sulphamoylanthranilic-acid (CSA) was found, but there was no evidence of special accumulation either of CSA or anthranilic acid in the anephric patients. In the patients the initial increase in serum concentration of sodium and protein followed by a more conspicuous decrease were more pronounced, but none of the changes were statistically significant.

Notes: [Auszug] DURING the progress of the work of Coster and Hevesy on the concentration and isolation of the new element hafnium (atomic number 72), the discovery of which was announced in NATURE of January 20, p. 79, we have examined spectroscopically a large number of their preparations in order to ...

Notes: [Auszug] IN our letter to NATURE of March 10, 1923, we gave a preliminary list of the most prominent lines between 2500 and 3500 Å. U. in the arc spectrum of the new element hafnium, discovered by Coster and Hevesy (see NATURE, January 20, February 24, April 7, 1923). In this list we included only lines ...

Notes: [Auszug] IN a previous letter (NATURE, March 10, p. 322) we have shown that the optical spectrum of the new element hafnium, of atomic number 72, which was discovered a short time ago by Coster and Hevesy, does not contain any of the lines belonging to the characteristic spectrum ascribed by Urbain ...
