    Description: Cruise MN-74-01 of the R/V Moana Wave was the first part of the field work of the NSF-IDOE Inter-University Ferromanganese Research Program in 1974. This program was designed to investigate the origin, growth, and distribution of copper/nickel-rich manganese nodules in the Pacific Ocean. The field effort was designed to satisfy sample requirements of the 15 principal investigators, while increasing general knowledge of the copper/nickel-rich nodule deposits of the equatorial Pacific. This report is the first of a series of cruise reports designed to assist sample requests for documented nodules, sediment, and water samples so the laboratory results can be realistically compared and related to the environment of nodule growth.

    Description: The paper presents the results of studies of ferromanganese deposits in the Hawaiian Archipelago. The chemical composition of ferromanganese oxide crusts and their associated substrates was determined by two methods. Atomic absorption spectrophotometry was used for the analysis of Fe, Mn, Co, Cu, Ni and AI, and Ti was determined by X-ray fluorescence using Energy Dispersive Analysis of X-rays (EDAX). Sample preparation and analytical procedures have been described in detail by Frank et al., 1976 (see related to: reference). The results of replicate analyses and the comparison to the Marine Standard Nodule (GRLD-126) (NSF-IDOE Manganese Nodule Project, unpubl, data) indicate that both precision and accuracy are in the range of 5-10% for each element.

    Description: Selected manganese deposits from the Hawaiian Archipelago were submitted to chemical analysis using two methods. Atomic absorption spectrophotometry was used for the analysis of Fe, Mn, Al, Co, Cu, and Ni, while Ti was determined by X-ray fluorescence (XRF) using Energy Dispersive Analysis of X-rays (EDAX). After drying, each powdered sample was then treated with about 3 ml Aqua Regia (1 ml 16N HNO3 and 2 ml 6N HCl) and the solution was evaporated and prepared for analysis.
