Notes: There are many known reasons why hot start-ups fail - new technologies, new markets, new distribution channels, inexperienced management teams, etc. - but an unquestionably critical factor is the leadership ability of the entrepreneurial CEO. Conventional wisdom states that professional managers should replace founders because they customarily do not have the necessary leadership skills and experience to further the continued growth of the organization. Recent research, however, has found no evidence that professional managers perform better in high-growth firms than the original founder. This investigation analyzed the experiences of 27 entrepreneurial CEOs who successfully defied conventional wisdom by leading their organizations from tenuous start-up to professionally managed enterprise. The research revealed two distinct sets of leadership competencies - labeled self competencies and functional competencies - required of entrepreneurs aspiring to remain at the helm of growth-driven high-tech firms.

Notes: Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to critically review the core findings from recently published place-based crime prevention research. The paper aims to critically evaluate the available evidence on the contribution of crime prevention through environmental design as a crime prevention strategy. Design/methodology/approach - Large-scale evaluations of crime prevention through environmental design (CPTED) are reviewed with a view to clarifying current knowledge on the evidence of crime prevention through environmental design. Findings - The review concludes that there is a growing body of research that supports the assertion that crime prevention through environmental design is effective in reducing both crime and fear of crime in the community. Research limitations/implications - Although the paper may not review all the evaluations of CPTED, it nonetheless provides a detailed compilation and overview of the most significant research in the area, including an extensive and modern bibliography on the subject. Research implications will be the subject of a forthcoming paper. Practical implications - CPTED is an increasingly fashionable approach and is being implemented on a global scale. Additionally, individual components such as territoriality, surveillance, maintenance, access control, activity support and target-hardening are being widely deployed. However, the evidence currently available is inconclusive and much criticised, which effectively prevents widespread intervention and investment by central government. The paper details the difficulties associated with demonstrating the effectiveness of CPTED. Originality/value - The paper concludes that although empirical proof has not been definitively demonstrated, there is a large and growing body of research, which supports the assertion that crime prevention through environmental design is a pragmatic and effective crime prevention tool. This review provides an extensive bibliography of contemporary crime prevention through environmental design and a follow-up paper will discuss the future research priorities for it.

Notes: Clinical isolates of Enterobacter cloacae, Citrobacter freundii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Stenotrophomonas maltophilia were tested for resistance to antibiotics and to the antiseptics benzalkonium chloride and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide. Furthermore, they were examined for the presence of the resistance genes qacE and qacEΔ1. qacEΔ1 was detected by PCR in 10% of all (n=103) and in 81% of multiply antibiotic-resistant strains (n=15). qacE was found in only one of 37 P. aeruginosa strains. The minimum inhibitory concentrations of benzalkonium chloride, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, and ethidium bromide were not significantly different for qacEΔ1/qacE-positive or -negative strains. Our data indicate that multiply antibiotic-resistant Gram-negative bacteria are not necessarily more resistant to quaternary ammonium compounds than antibiotic-sensitive strains even though qacE or qacEΔ1 is present.

Notes: [Auszug] Developmental processes are thought to be highly complex, but there have been few attempts to measure and compare such complexity across different groups of organisms. Here we introduce a measure of biological complexity based on the similarity between developmental and computer programs. We ...

Notes: Abstract The world's population is concentrated in urban areas. This change in demography has brought landscape transformations that have a number of documented effects on stream ecosystems. The most consistent and pervasive effect is an increase in impervious surface cover within urban catchments, which alters the hydrology and geomorphology of streams. This results in predictable changes in stream habitat. In addition to imperviousness, runoff from urbanized surfaces as well as municipal and industrial discharges result in increased loading of nutrients, metals, pesticides, and other contaminants to streams. These changes result in consistent declines in the richness of algal, invertebrate, and fish communities in urban streams. Although understudied in urban streams, ecosystem processes are also affected by urbanization. Urban streams represent opportunities for ecologists interested in studying disturbance and contributing to more effective landscape management.

Notes: Recent studies on the Munich laser ion source were aimed at the understanding and optimization of the production mechanism of negative ions. The possibility of extremely high, pulsed negative ion currents is due to the outstanding features of the laser produced plasma: a high electron density in conjunction with a low electron temperature. The intensity of the laser beam is restricted to a relatively small range from 5×107 up to 1×109 W/cm2. More than 20 different ions have been produced from pure element targets and from a number of salts. The yields achieved are in good agreement with a model including Saha equilibrium distributions. The comparison between pure elemental targets and alloys or salt shows a strong influence of ions with a low ionization potential on the negative ion production.

Notes: Recently significant crosstalk has been observed in a multibeam experiment in which gratings were previously thought to be independent. In this letter, it is shown that the crosstalk is due to a coherent nonlinear combination of the primary gratings, which causes additional peaks to occur in the diffraction pattern and changes the diffraction efficiency of the primary gratings explaining the apparent crosstalk. It is shown that the effect can be derived from the band transport model when all the terms in the expression for the generation of charge carriers are retained. Results are presented for a configuration consisting of a reference beam and two object beams and show experimental results that confirm the model. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Clinical isolates of different Enterobacteriaceae strains and genetically modified variants which were resistant to the disinfectant formaldehyde were investigated. In cell-free extracts of all formaldehyde-resistant strains a glutathione-dependent formaldehyde dehydrogenase activity was demonstrated. In contrast cell extracts from formaldehyde-sensitive strains did not show any formaldehyde dehydrogenase activity. The enzymatic degradation of formaldehyde seems to play an important role in formaldehyde resistance.
