Notes: [Auszug] On Galileo's first inbound pass following orbital insertion, the magnetometer2 measurements followed reasonably closely the predictions from a recent model of the magnetic field of Jupiter's magnetosphere3 that we refer to as the KK96 model. (This model consists of the O6 model4 of Jupiter's ...

Notes: The magnetotail-like equilibrium model of Lembège and Pellat [Phys. Fluids, 25, 1995 (1982)] has been used in a number of stability calculations over the past 13 years. Most of these computations examine collisionless tearing—a mode of tail instability first suggested by Coppi et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 16, 1207 (1966)]—or other kinetic modes and involve both analytical and computer analysis. In this Communication it is shown, analytically, that the equilibrium model of Lembège and Pellat is unstable according to ideal magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). More precisely, for the ideal MHD stability theory of Bernstein et al. [Proc. R. Soc. London Ser. A 244, 17 (1958)] it is proven that Λ=p′+Γp (v″/v′)〈0. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Multipole stability with respect to quasielectrostatic low frequency modes (frequencies smaller than the average ion bounce frequency) is revisited. Aside from localized modes found previously by M. N. Rosenbluth [Phys. Fluids 11, 869 (1968)], it is shown that convective type modes that are equipotentials along field lines are likely to be more unstable, when the average curvature drift is positive (v‘〈0) and smaller than the local curvature drift.

Notes: Abstract Observations of sodium D-line emission from Io and the magnetosphere of Jupiter are reported. A disk-shaped cloud of sodium is found to exist in the Jovian magnetosphere with an inner edge at about 4R ч and an outer edge at about 10R ч. The gravitational scale height above the equatorial plane is a few Jovian radii. The data are interpreted in terms of a sputtering model, in which the sodium required to maintain the cloud is sputtered off the surface of Io by trapped energetic radiation-belt protons. Conditions on the atmospheric density are obtained. The Keplerian orbits attainable by such escaping sputtered atoms can provide the observed spatial distribution. The required 500-keV proton flux required to provide the 1–10 keV protons which will sputter the sodium at the surface of Io is consistent with the limiting trapped flux determined by ion-cyclotron turbulence.

Notes: Abstract The goal of mission-oriented theory is to develop techniques and models which can be used by experimentalists and theorists to interpret spacecraft measurements, deducing from them the maximum amount of information about both local and large-scale dynamics. To be effective, theorists and experimentalists must express their results in a common format. A reasonable starting point is for mission theorists to adopt the format currently used by experimentalists. To this end we have developed new diagnostics for plasma kinetic simulations, which display the results in formats very similar to those commonly used to present satellite wave and particle measurements. We have used a simulation of broadband electrostatic noise to demonstrate how, by comparing simulation results with observations, we can infer quantities which cannot be measured, such as the wave mode. We are also developing the capability of creating data streams from virtual spacecraft located in the simulation region. For example, we used a kinetic magnetopause simulation to explore the ways in which simulations can assist in the interpretation of single and multiple satellite measurements in regions of strong spatial inhomogeneity. To address directly the mission objective of measuring global transport, global MHD models are employed. In order to facilitate the initial comparison with ISTP satellites, time histories of simulated generic states of the magnetosphere will be stored on optical disks; these will then be used to create dynamical displays of both local parameters and the global configuration. Finally we demonstrate the use of data based phenomenological magnetic field models in single particle trajectory calculations to describe large-scale kinetic properties of the magnetospheric plasma. We briefly discuss the success of large-scale kinetic calculations in delineating the structure of the plasma sheet, and present some possible ISTP research initiatives which can be used to determine the structure of the very distant tail and the entry of plasma into the tail.
