Summary The present study deals with the foreseeable consequences of deforestation of the Amazon Region. While former utilization by means of shifting cultivation by the amerindian natives and by neo-brazilian settlers did not harm the continuance of the hylaea ecosystem as long as the density of human population was scarce, the actual destruction of the forest which started a few years ago by development projects and proceeds rapidly, will have the following effects: 1. Interruption of the closed nutrient circle and loss of the nutrient reserves contained in the living biomass; 2. Disturbance of the waterhousehold and the climate of Amazonia by decreasing the intra-amazonian water-circulation, with subsequently longer dry seasons and more unbalanced regime of the rivers; 3. Intensified soil-erosion and increased sediment- and bottom-load of the rivers; 4. Increase of the CO2-content of the global atmosphere; 5. Annihilation of the gen-reservoir contained in the high species number of the forest ecosystem, danger of occurrence of pests and diseases in monocultures; 6. Adaptation to a new ecosystem empoverished in nutrients, in species of plants and animals, and in bio-productivity.
