Summary In the course of our investigations of micro methods for the determination of molecular weight from vapor density, it seemed logical to work out a procedure for vaporizing organic materials under diminished pressure. In connection with a complete literature compilation, the pertinent apparatus and methods were described and discussed with regard to their applicability. Since none of the described procedures seemed to meet the essential requirement, of being generally applicable with the use of simple apparatus, a new micro method has been worked out on the basis of the 1899 publication ofBleier andKohn. A micro apparatus and milligram procedure has been developed via several models, which were tested under various conditions. In it any initial chosen diminished pressure may be employed, and the increase in pressure may be determined, at a given mass and temperature, that results when a material is volatilized in a constant volume. The test determinations cited prove the utility and range ever which the new vaporimetric method may be applied. Special significance attaches to the trials with solid samples and benzine tests. By means of a benzine sample, it is shown that all three of the micro devices developed by us function with excellent agreement.
