Notes: Abstract Continental red beds are the host rocks of a characteristic style of mineralization which suggests a genetic link between red bed formation and ore formation. Samples of unmineralized and mineralized Triassic sediments from Central England have been studied sedimentologically, petrographically and geochemically with the aim of clarifying this link which may provide valuable guides for exploration. On the basis of sedimentological and petrographic observations it is suggested that these red beds were formed as a result of diagenetic alteration whereby detrital silicates and oxides are progressively dissolved and the iron released is deposited as hematite. A model for mineralization is proposed involving the release of trace metals from detrital minerals during diagenesis, their retention in saline interstitial solutions, migration to suitable sites of precipitation and deposition by reaction with trapped hydrocarbons or reduced sulphur.

Notes: Abstract The influence on several hot wire measurements of the diameter d and overheat ratio a of a wire placed near a conducting wall in a turbulent boundary layer is investigated. These measurements include the mean velocity and second, third and fourth order moments of the longitudinal velocity fluctuation u. A decrease in either d or a reduces the departure of the measured mean velocity from the expected linear sublayer value. The measured influence of d and a precludes the use of a universal correction for the mean velocity. There is no influence of a on the rms, skewness and flatness factors of u. Only a small increase is found in the skewness and flatness factors of u when d is decreased.

Notes: Abstract  The promoter of the RAP1 gene contains four potential binding sites for Rap1p, located between the UAS and the RNA initiation site. We have confirmed that three of these sites are recognised by Rap1p in vitro. Different combinations of the three sites were then mutated to abolish Rap1p binding, and the effect of these mutations on promoter activity was determined. When all three Rap1p sites were mutated, the activity of the promoter increased by about 130%, indicating that at least one of the sites is a negative element. Analysis of promoters with different combinations of the mutant sites revealed that the 5′-most site (A) is the principal target for repression. To test the involvement of Rap1p in controlling RAP1 expression, we have measured transcription of the chromosomal RAP1 gene in a RAP1 wild-type strain and two strains containing rap1 ts mutations. At a semi-permissive temperature, the RAP1 promoter was more active in the rap1 ts strains than in the RAP1 wild-type strain, suggesting that expression of the chromosomal RAP1 gene is greater when the activity of Rap1p in the cell is compromised. The activities of the wild-type promoter, and the promoter with mutations in the three Rap1p-binding sites, were compared in sir1, sir2, sir3 and sir4 mutant strains. In each case, the mutated promoter was significantly more active than the wild-type promoter, implying that the repression mechanism is not dependent on any one of the SIR gene products.

Notes: [Auszug] AN interesting mathematical derivation of the rotatory power of a simple organic compound has just been published by S. F. Notes: Many sensors have been applied to the problem of measuring neutral atomic oxygen fluxes in low Earth orbit. The techniques used to date tend to suffer from several key disadvantages, variously: large mass and power budgets, large size, high cost, the ability to make only one measurement and poor time resolution. In this article preliminary results from ground-based testing of a novel atomic oxygen sensor based on a semiconducting metal oxide are reported. Such sensors are simple and relatively cheap while also requiring small power and mass budgets and, most importantly, are reusable. The sensors have been used in laboratory experiments to investigate the axial variation of atomic oxygen flux in a pulsed laser atomic oxygen source; the results compare well with readings taken with a carbon-coated quartz crystal microbalance. A small instrument based on these sensors has been designed and built for application on the UK's STRV-1c microsatellite. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A description is given of equipment designed to be fitted to either sheep or cattle, and to record automatically information on the jaw movements associated with both grazing and ruminating, movements of the head in plucking mouthfuls of herbage, and the time spent in grazing. The equipment has been successfully tested against alternative visual and mechanical methods of measuring grazing behaviour. The use of modified equipment in detailed studies has shown (a) that the maximum acceleration of the head in a longitudinal plane when plucking mouthfuls of herbage was twice as great in sheep as in cattle and in the sheep, but not in the cow, increased as sward height decreased; and (b) that the ratio of jaw movements to head movements was always greater than unity in both sheep and cattle, and was greater on tall than on short swards in two out of three comparisons. The rate of biting was significantly lower on tall than on short swards.

Notes: The spectrum of the lateral derivative of temperature has been measured on the center line of a turbulent plane jet and compared with calculations, based on local isotropy, derived from the spectra of either the streamwise derivative or the temporal derivative of temperature. To within the experimental uncertainty, quantitative agreement between measurement and calculation is satisfactory for sufficiently large wavenumbers.

Notes: Most activities might benefit from an independent review; but very little attention has been given to the review of research and development (R & D). The evolving scope of internal audit together with trends in R & D provide a more favourable climate for the internal audit of this industry of discovery (Walley, 1974, p. 191).This paper presents the results of a survey which was questionnaire based and completed by internal auditors, most of whom worked for industrial multinationals which are household names. They represented companies employing 0–61 m staff with a turnover of |SL12b p.a.; 75|X% of the respondent organizations were industrial concerns employing 0.56m with a turnover of |SL10.7b p.a., most of the remaining respondents being financial organizations. Forty-two per cent were under overseas control.By focusing on the practice and intentions of leading organizations with a record of progressive management, the results of the survey point a way which is likely to be followed more generally. As the internal audit departments were also large (29 auditors in each; 35 for the industrial departments) they were better placed to extend the scope of their work.
