Notes: Abstract The Southwest Pacific GPS Project (SWP) is using the Global Positioning System (GPS) to monitor crustal motion across and within a plate boundary complex between the Australian and Pacific plates. GPS field campaigns were conducted in 1988, 1989 and 1990, to observe networks of increasing size and complexity. The 1990 campaign consisted of two periods, or “Bursts”, and this paper focuses on the analysis of data collected during the nine day Burst 1 in July, 1990, a period in which GPS Selective Availability was activated. During Burst 1, baselines that spanned the Tonga Trench and the Lau Basin were observed, and only one station (Espiritu Santo, Vanuatu) was located west of Fiji in the network. The lengths of the baselines observed fall mainly between 300 km and 1600 km, but some lines are as long as 3500 km. A total of 78 station-days of field site data and approximately 150 station-days of global fiducial data were processed from predominantly codeless receivers. A global fiducial network of 20 sites was used to provide orbit control and accuracy assessment for the 13 available satellites. The daily solutions for 45 baselines between 10 SWP sites have an RMS scatter in the length of 24 mm plus 6 parts per billion. This scatter provides an estimate of baseline precision for the Burst 1 “nominal solution.” Experiments were conducted to investigate a variety of possible effects on the SWP Network baseline estimates, including the influence of a reduced global fiducial network for the purpose of assessing the quality of results obtained in 1988 and 1989 in which the fiducial network was smaller than in 1990. These experiments produced results that agreed with the nominal solution at the level of the precision estimate. Furthermore, estimates for selected baselines in Australia, the Central Pacific, North America and Europe, also measured by VLBI and SLR, were used for an external accuracy evaluation. The GPS and VLBI or SLR determinations of length agreed at a level consistent with the nominal solution precision estimate.

Notes: The density of coincidence sites in cubic crystal lattice planes in coincidence-site-related crystals with a multiplicity less than or equal to 31 has been investigated. A comprehensive table of lattice planes with a high density of coincidence sites for each of the twenty-two coincidence-site relationships is presented. In addition a complete list of the alternative ways of describing the twenty-two coincidence-site relationships as defined by Friedel in 1926 is presented.

Notes: A simple and rapid procedure for orientating electron diffraction patterns required for the simultaneous determination of the Burgers vectors of dislocations in twin related or coincidence site related crystals is described. The determination of the Burgers vectors of dislocations in twin related zinc crystals is used as an example of the procedure. The procedure is applicable to all crystal structures and is based on the detailed analysis of the rotations about the optical axis and goniometer tilt stage axis of an electron microscope required to produce desired diffraction patterns from the two crystals of interest. The analysis also illustrates the way in which the tensor notation may be used in elementary vector algebra applied to lattice geometry.

Notes: Summary A detailed treatment is presented of the crystallography of twinning shears which cause the polymer chain axes in polymer crystals to be invariant or to be rotated but undistorted. These chain-axis invariant and rotation twins in polyethylene are considered in detail. The polyethylene twinning mode with twinning elements $$\begin{gathered} K_1 = \{ 102\} ;\eta _1 = \left\langle {20\bar 1} \right\rangle ; K_2 = \{ 100\} ; \hfill \\ \eta _2 = \left\langle {001} \right\rangle and magnitude of shear{\mathbf{ }}g = 0.34 \hfill \\ \end{gathered} $$ is proposed as the twinning mode which is most likely to cause a marked chain axis rotation without causing a change in the orientation of theb axis and only a small change in thickness of crystalline lamellae. These are the requirements ofc-twinning which was used byPietralla (Colloid & Polymer Sci.254, 249–257 (1976) to explain some aspects of the orientation behaviour of polyethylene.

Notes: Summary The Vickers microhardness test has been used as an additional tool for the determination of the microstructure of an injection moulded semicrystalline thermoplastic. The results show for the first time that there is a clear and well defined correlation between microhardness measurements and changes in preferred orientation through the thickness of the mouldings as revealed by acid etching and wide angle X-ray diffraction. Notably, the microhardness test describes, if the necessary precautions are taken, the extent of the different structures and the degree of preferred chain axis orientation within those structures.

Notes: Abstract A polypropylene-based binder system was used to injection mould test bars containing 65 vol% aluminium powder. Specimens, 3 and 6 mm thick, made from these bars were used for pyrolytic binder removal experiments in static air and nitrogen. The development of a carefully defined experimental procedure for the determination of the heating rate at which binder removal can be carried out at a given temperature without the creation of macro defects is fully described. The use of isothermal heat treatments during pyrolysis are also considered and results are presented as temperature-heating rate diagrams for each atmosphere and thickness investigated. These diagrams show a lower and an upper boundary. Defect formation occurs if the temperature-heating rate relationship lies between the boundaries. Near optimum binder removal schedules deduced from each diagram have been experimentally verified.

Notes: Abstract A wide range of mirror plate butt welding conditions were used to join PVDF pipe to pipe and to an injection moulded fitting. The microstructures of the welds were characterized by microtomy and by transmitted light microscopy, and the mechanical properties by tensile testing. The results show that high integrity pipe to pipe joins can be produced for a relatively wide range of welding conditons, and that the integrity of pipe to fitting joins may be reduced because of the adverse influence of the moulded part on weld bead geometry.
