Description: Interstitial waters recovered during Leg 38 show large changes in major ion composition and also in oxygen isotope composition. Increases in Ca[++] and Sr[++] and decreases in K[+], Mg[++], and O18/O16 are interpreted in terms of extensive diagenesis of terrigenous, volcanic, or basaltic igneous materials in the sediments and underlying basalts. Slight, but well-established increases in chlorinity with depth indicate that these postulated weathering reactions involve uptake of water to a measurable extent. Interstitial waters from sites drilled on the Inner Voring Plateau suggest the infusion of fresh waters by aquifers from the mainland of Norway.

Description: Interstitial waters of several sites drilled during the Deep Sea Drilling Project in the Norwegian-Greenland Sea during Leg 38 have revealed substantial changes in dissolved constituents and in the 18O/16O composition of interstitial waters. Studies of the chemical composition of the bulk sediments and their 〈1µm fraction indicate the presence of large amounts of volcanic ash, especially in sites close to Iceland. The presence of authigenic clay minerals (illite/smectite) suggests that alteration of this volcanic ash is an important process. A study of Site 348 reveals that dissolved Ca gradients are caused mainly by transport from the underlying basalts, but that decreases in Mg and d18O (H2O) are largely due to reactions involving alteration of volcanic ash in the sediments. Studies of 87Sr/86Sr distributions of dissolved Sr confirm this process in those sites with high contents of volcanic matter. On the other hand, in sites where the chemical composition of dissolved constituents has been little influenced by alteration reactions. 87Sr/86Sr ratios reveal complete diffusive exchange with present-day seawater.

In:  Supplement to: Drever, James I; Lawrence, James R; Antweiler, Ronald C (1979): Gypsium and halite from the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, DSDP Site 395. Earth and Planetary Science Letters, 42(1), 98-102, https://doi.org/10.1016/0012-821X(79)90193-6
    Publication Date: 2023-06-27
Description: Gypsum and halite crystals, together with saponite and phillipsite, were found in a vein in a basalt sill 625 m below the sea floor at DSDP Site 395A, located 190 km west of the crest of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. The delta34S value of the gypsum (+19.4‰) indicates a seawater source for the sulfate. The delta18O values of the saponite (+19.9‰) and phillipsite (+18.1‰) indicate either formation from normal seawater at about 55°C or formation from delta18O-depleted seawater at a lower temperature. The gypsum (which could be secondary after anhydrite) was formed by reaction between Ca[2+] released from basalt and SO4[2-] in circulating seawater. The halite could have formed when water was consumed by hydration of basalt under conditions of extremely restricted circulation. A more probable mechanism is that the gypsum was originally precipitated as anhydrite at temperatures above 60°C. As the temperature dropped the anhydrite converted to gypsum. The conversion would consume water, which could cause halite precipitation, and would cause an increase in the volume of solids, which would plug the vein and prevent subsequent dissolution of the halite.

    Publication Date: 2023-06-27
Description: Gabbro-metabasalt polymict breccias cored in Deep Sea Drilling Project Hole 453 are cemented in part by hydrothermal alteration to lower greenschist facies (chlorite-epidote-actinolite) mineral assemblages. Temperature estimates for this alteration, based on oxygen isotope determinations of secondary minerals, are nearly 100°C at the top of the breccias and over 200°C in a zone of intense alteration near the base.
